Hello lc62 You'll probably get more responses if you post this in the Octavia II forum. Is it a petrol or diesel? Which engine? How many miles? Service history? Does it go past the redline - as in does it feel like it's a runaway? Does the accelerator pedal feel like it's sticking? When you say white smoke, are you thinking head gasket, or is it just normal condensation given the time of year and an over revving engine? Any mayonnaise - water in the oil or vice versa? Have you had it scanned for fault codes? Gaz

Nah, single carb. Wasn't it the 1300GT that had twin SU's? Sadly, I was 16 & 17 years old when I had it. In my youthful exuberance, the difference between what I knew about cars, and what I thought I knew about cars was a gaping chasm, but it was a good learning curve. I learned things like you can get a floor pan through an MOT by pop riveting a plate from a galvanised water tank onto it, then using P.38 crafted to look like welding under underseal. I also put some heavy duty driving lights on (can't remember what they were - possibly KC Daylighters) and learned the value of relays, instead of melting multi-column switches. I filled the dash-pot with Red-ex because someone told me it was a good idea, and like an idiot I believed them, which is why it needed weekly topping up. I broke the rear subframe 'jumping' over the railway bridge at Doleham Halt, just outside of Westfield 🙄 It was used and abused. Felt like I had it years, but in reality I had a Mk3 Cortina by the time I was 18, so didn't have it much more than a year. Gaz

Reality: 155x13 crossply tyres A Subframe that was more rust than metal Needing to correct the timing and top up the SU's dashpot every Saturday Headlights so powerful you could overtake them Brake bands slipping like hell Drum brakes Misfires directly proportionate to how hard it was raining An oil leak that would put the Amoco Cadiz to shame Trying to not turn the heater blower on coz of the smell that something might've died in the pipework Manual choke that either raced or choked it to death - nothing in between Gaz

Had you gone for a 1.6TDI, the car would have a DQ200, which is a seven speed dry clutch DSG. As your car is from 2014, I'd have advised you to search this site, and others, to do some homework around the fair share of failures this particular DSG experienced, and to make sure any 'quiet' service campaign work (34h5 & 34F7 IIRC) has been completed. One of which being changing the synthetic oil to a mineral based oil, which appeared to address some of the early DSG and mechatronic failures. As it is, having a 2.0TDI, you have the DQ250 six speed wet clutch unit, which is considered to be a far more robust unit, and will undoubtedly serve you well. I have both DSG's. A DQ200 in the Polo, and a DQ250 in the Golf. Both good boxes, it's just the earlier DQ200's had some failures. Like Root, I'd want to know what it does, and perhaps more importantly doesn't, cover. Is it fully comprehensive whatever-happens-to-your-tyres-or-wheels irrespective cover? Or is it 'Sorry sir, stone chips and kerb damage are expected 'fair wear and tear' items.... you've exceeded your puncture repair allocation...., no sir, we don't think that's vandalism, it an 'act of god' exclusion item' type of insurance? Caveat emptor IMO. Gaz
