A pencil symbol like that is usually to enter the 'Edit Screen' mode. It's use full to change the Home Screen - but the system needs to be on (ignition at least, no need for engine to be running). Thus I assume the button is there but not active because it's shutting down - another example of 'Simply Clever' software coding? 😉

If you can, get a passenger (or park) to take a photo or video of the map screen showing you in the wrong location - it will be some evidence of the issue to give to the dealer.

I'd be in favour of a driving ability retest periodically, regardless of age. Also, given that the Highway Code is updated from time to time I reckon some form of theory test is worthwhile too.

I suspect a blockage in the hose before the joint to both nozzles.

I rarely use the second key fob (stored in a faraday pouch), but after replacing the battery in the one I normally use I continued to get the dashboard warning. Tried several different batteries, no difference. Out of desperation I tried the second key, got the warning so changed that one too. All fine with both keys! Two years or so later, same thing. Change the battery in the primary key, still got the warning. Changed it in the pretty much unused second key as well, all fine. BTW, I always use Panasonic CR2023 batteries. From my experience they last longer than other brands.

There is a setting for the volume at power on; mine is set very low. It’s in the ‘Sounds’ menu item. Also, I’m pretty sure there is a setting to choose if you want audio to resume on startup - but I can’t remember where it is, sorry. Back to auto start/stop; from what I’ve read here I’m pretty sure there is something odd with it in mHEV cars. The vast majority of (technical) complaints I recall are from mHEV owners. Frustrating! Fortunately for me mine is a 5 year old 1.5tsi and after 67k miles auto start/stop still works fine.

Best I can think of is to use the app. It can show average over a year, and swipe back over previous years; it also shows the mileage for that year. Mine goes back to April ‘23, so with a bit of maths can work out the overall average.

Do these errors clear within a few minutes/miles? At this time of year condensation or dew over the sensors cause errors which clear once the moisture has gone. Also, if I park very close to something and turn it off when the sensors are beeping I get an error message on starting up next time. It clears almost immediately. I put this down to some form of startup self test that fails due to the proximity of an obstruction. I’ve never had the errors persist beyond a mile or so even when the car/sensor is covered with frost.

Mechanically mine has proven totally reliable over 66k miles; early infotainment woes fixed through updates and is anytime now. The 1.5tsi manual is very economical on fuel - overall 57mpg for those 66k miles, mostly long motorway trips. High 40s to low 50s on more local runs. I would normally change my car at about this age/mileage but I like this one so much have decided to keep it another year or two.

Are you set up as the primary user?

Same with mine; ACC equipped manual transmission. I have always assumed it’s part of the ‘traffic jam assist’ function (which would be far more useful with a DSG ‘box).

Bluetooth/AA/CarPlay connected phone battery?

Similarly, my experience is of pre-FL Octavia mk4 manual car. Yes, AEB does work with a manual 'box and as @386ka mentions, stalling is the last thing to worry about in such circumstances. Mine has activated a few times in over 4 years and 65k miles and was pleasantly surprised at its effectiveness though I have never had to let it bring the car to a stop as the danger disappeared. Only in the first few months did I get erroneous AEB activation, was fixed in one of the many s/w updates. As for sensitivity, it is speed aware; by that I mean the faster I am travelling to greater the distance before it kicks in - as I found out at 70mph on the A34. On pre-FL cars there is a setting to adjust the sensitivity - or at least there was when I first got my car. Maybe it is deeply buried in the menus now, but equally I can see the removing that option. Two reasons - reduces the likelihood of us numpty drivers interfering with the safety systems 🙄, or, more likely, reduce development/maintenance costs for the s/w systems.

Interesting! Certainly touching the screen can prompt the satnav system to want to navigate to it. I have always cancelled it at that point, never let it ‘do its thing’, whatever that may be. Worthy of a test I reckon. Also, in the uk there are several towns with the same name, each of which probably have the same road names - such as High Street, Whitchurch. Could it be that your other half selected the wrong town? I know I’ve done it in the past 🙄

That’s what I’d thought but don’t understand why the globe is still white, not grey. But then why have two means (grey globe and red cross) of telling us there is no connection.

Sounds like a s/ware glitch to me. Have you tried a hard reboot? If not, hold the power button (left end of volume slider) for 10+ seconds until it restarts.

I downsized from a 1.4tsi Superb mk2 hatch to a manual 1.5tsi mk4 Octavia estate (2020 so not the latest, nor the etec). Space in the boot is fantastic; rear legroom notably less, headroom fine. Performance is more than adequate even when fully loaded and mechanically has proven reliable over 65k miles. My early s/ware issue won’t be relevant if you’re looking at a FL mk4.5. My car is incredibly economical for a petrol, averaging over 57mpg since I bought it. From what I read the etec is capable of similar. Having spent nearly five years in this forum I’m not aware of any issues with the 1.5 etec and DSG other than early models with a 12V battery drain issue. Software updates seem to have that sorted though. To sum up, I’d say my mk4 is the best car I’ve ever had, perhaps not the most fun to drive but after 50 years of driving I don’t really need that any more!

Regarding #4, the iPhone can only connect to the car by Bluetooth OR CarPlay. So I guess when tethered it presumably Bluetooth connects to the car hence you see the list of contacts. Once you connect via CarPlay, then the Bluetooth drops and you lose the contacts list in the car. The system ’assumes’ if CarPlay is connected then hands free calls are made by using Siri.

And make sure cover is like for like. The devil is in the detail.

In which case I have no experience, mine being a 2020 model. Hopefully some else will be able to advise.

I reckon there are several ways in which the Maps directions might be silenced. In the CarPlay settings screen (accessed through the cars infotainment screen) Silent Mode settings. I have set mine to mirror the iPhone. Whilst navigating with Maps (in the car) tap the screen and a Speaker icon appears in the top left, just below the routes icon. Tap the speaker. Select from three levels of notification/alert. The bottom one is none. Whilst navigating with Maps (directly on the phone, not CarPlay screen) tap the up-arrow in the bottom right of the screen to display Route Options. One of those is Voice Volume. Other thoughts… Restart your iPhone. Very occasionally I have no sound from Music, Spotify, nor Maps. Restarting the phone and reconnecting CarPlay had sorted it. I think the infotainment system remembers volume settings for different sources. So for example, built satnav is different to the radio. Maybe CarPlay is one of the sources is differentiates. Does Music/Spotify play at normal volume but not Maps?

Yep, a steep learning curve with the mk4. When I got mine I spent at least an hour sat in it with the manual, my iPhone and a mug of coffee. Went through all the infotainment menu options in turn trying to work out what they did and how they did it. After a week while did the same to tweak settings that it thought I wanted but realised I’d set ‘sub-optimally’ (eg interior & ambient lighting).

But isn’t using Siri, or the android equivalent, a better option? Less looking at a display and less twiddling with a roller.
