Talex/Novus Database Discussion

Featured Replies

Mark ive just basically gone through their site and extracted the information, i have got one of the devices on its way so when and if it arrives i will road test it and let you know what the tech specs are in the manual. i personally think its just got a bigger memory, a newer gps chip and a few flashing lights, but once i do have one in my hand i will let you know.

As for laser detectors, they are not illegal yet, they still trying to push this one through, thus why road angel still sell the laser add ons.

HTH's

I'll put a beer on the fact that it's still a SiRFStarIILE on the same board in a different case with a few connectors fitted or not fitted. IIRC there was space on the talex lite PCB for two extra LED's if you wanted. There is some memory inside the SiRFStar GPS/Processor chip anyway IIRC.

If you get one in your hand will it be a device you paid for? If so and the screws are not tamper covered it would be good to see a picture of the boards inside and out.

IIRC the chip for the current device can hold a huge number of locations so unless they are planning to change something I can't see it running out of locations that quickly.

that's what I thought because the pgps data project has decoded both talex and novus data and there are plenty of memory locations left in the existing machines so no chance of running out in the future as long as the databases are available.

Looks like i'm a few days to late to be the first to get the Talex Email , seems not much is new other that a change of housing design , for me i would have gone down the route of doing a p/x with my old unit and upgrading for reason and one reason only , they should have spent a bit of time and money on making the display more usable in bright sunlight, my full fat unit is as good as useless in full sun and i guess the new unit will be just the same :(

Change the LED segment displays on the talex for red versions of the same. It's probably easier to see the red in the sun.

how many locations are in the present device now and how many empty locations are left in available memory?

From the people with all of these on their site and I guess the designer since it's their name and website on the Talex SiRFstar II/LP

Notice the hermes and woxter devices have extra LEDs and the rider and hermes also have the ports in the same position as the all new device in question?

Sure enough I've got the lid off a talex lite as I speak and it's got space on the board for connector where the new ones is. If I'm really bored I'll fit one onto it ans see if it works as expected.

Still can't get my Elite to download the Novus database. Or any database for that matter.

Getting a surge warning on any USB port I used, when I summoned enough enthusiasm to try it again earlier? Tried two different USB cables (one brand new) but same thing happened.

Thoroughly tee'd off with the whole damn farce; wish I'd never bought it

Steve

Have you tried putting the Elite into a powered hub Steve? I'm just wondering if maybe it needs more than your computers USB system can provide.

Are you using multiple USB devices such as keybaords and mice?

Nope, not got one immediately to hand - but good idea :) Was using my laptop (Vaio) as it's the only thing I have with XP on at home, as the Novus updater doesn't work under Vista.

Nothing else USB is plugged in. Was behaving rather erratically TBH, and only managed to get it into 'dbase download' mode twice. Once the updater app didn't pick up any ports to use. Then the only time I got what looked like progress, it saw the device (COM8 I think), I browsed to the downloaded update file, app sat for a while then errored

I feel like throwing it across the room and it ending up in a million pieces. Someone offered me an Origin B2 last week. I'm sorely tempted to hardwire that in and pay the required update fee, and put this whole episode down to a bad experience.

Steve

Give a desktop or powered USB hub a go mate.

Sounds like something isn't right in the software or USB link. You are using a genuine cable are you not? Might be worth trying a different cable as we found they have a usb to serial chip embedded in the cable for the original versions on USB.

That's my main issue I think - the cable. I can't put my hand on the one that was supplied. Not with any certainty anyway. It'll be around somewhere, but I've got loads of mini-USB cables!

Any way around it, or is there something immediately obvious about the supplied cable, that I can look for?

Steve

When i get the device i will see how easy it is to get into it, but at moment i dont really want to invalidate the warranty. nice to see you found the site, did find out about the microfuzion ones, they dont do direction they do proximity which will be a pain in the bum if the camera is on the road running parallel to you.

Im still waiting for a reply back on how many user locations the device will hold, but you also need to remember that a full fat device has school locations, blackspots, sharp bends, step hill, camera protection zone, congestion charge (and i think a few more) as well as the fixed, red light, specs and mobile locations.

it might be the way you have plugged it in, i remember trying to update mine and how tempermental it was about how it had to be plugged in in a certain way etc and when they did put a new update up it was worse than the previous out of date one, so i gave up and bought a second hand talex full fat.

Steve I use the Novus updater in Vista and any old USB cable.

well silentwol who is working on the database reckoned there were around 10-13000 cameras and around 26000 POI's which include some other types of cameras but also the schools and all the other stuff. So if the total is now around 40000 say and there are 133000 available there is absolutely no chance of the existing spec products running out of memory soon.

Only way to run out would be to use 3 per point (120'000) which would then only leave 4333 (13000/3) more spots assuming none are removed.

That's still a fair few spare locations and I also doubt the device uses 3 GPS locations for each POI.

Got a link to the DB project?

My bad on the USB cable, I'd just try a different cable and a powered hub or PC then Steve.

Paul, I'd be interested to know who told you that the MicroFuzion don't do direction and only proximity as I don't believe this is the case. I'd guess MF might have something to say about claims like that being put about too if it isn't true.

I really do think your contacts are feeding you duff, or as best tinted information Paul.

he reckons that main points take 20 bytes and other subsiduary points only 12 bytes so it depends how the memory is sliced up between these rather than total numbers and simple division, you can get in touch via the pgps forum. In any case we can agree that running out of memory is an insignificant problem on our existing units.

ive read various comments on the microfuzion, and even the autoexpress test last year Microfuzion Express | Products | Auto Express mentions its confusions. The other problem a couple of years ago was it just told you there was a camera there even if it was for the other carriageway. Dont know what they are like these days, but they have never scored highly on various car magazine tests only on the price.

the talex stores each camera or location something like this (i have the user point program so able to see it)51.409172,-1.342215,292 ,51.410473,-1.346015,300,30,1 the first set of numbers is longitude, second latitude, third direction heading. these so far are for 500yds before a camera. the next one is longitude then latitude of camera, then which way you heading, the speed you going and type of location. im guessing that for multidirection or where roads join the road with the location within 500yds that a seperate entry will have to be put in. However from just that above you looking at 50 bytes.

How are the voices stored on the device? are they stored in same section as camera database as that will also need memory too i beleive?!?

no, data memory is not used for the voice alerts. The voice chip is seperate and you could record your own messages into it if you wanted.

Steve I use the Novus updater in Vista and any old USB cable.

Cheers Stu. Will have a try on Vista then, probably tomorrow.

Might well be pulling out the hardwire on Sunday though and choosing the Origin/Pogo path instead.

Steve

latest talex update now out 3.3mb(full fat) version 8083 anyone got a file size for the lite version?

My Bad, it was very early and I must have translated what you said into `Talex Speak` ;)

So in answer to your question, no it's stored in one of those chips there ;)

lol, no probs, i just wondered if they were in "seperate rooms" so to say in the device or all in the same. The other option i was thinking if they were all in the same room to make more space was to record them at a crappier quality.

pity you couldnt download different voices for it like with the sat navs.

If you find information which should be on the datasheet it would tell you how to put new voices in there if you wanted.
