Talex/Novus Database Discussion

Featured Replies

I have used a Talex Lite since buying one from Aldi in the middle of least year and feel that some people could be given a false sense of security after reading some of the posts in this forum.

A detector is only as good as its database and I believe that Talex still falls down here. No database will be 100% accurate but my feeling is that Talex is less accurate than, say, the one produced by Pocket GPS World.

I drive with a Talex Lite plus Talex database and Garmin Sat Nav plus PGPSW database and ensure they are regularly updated - Talex is at 8094 - but as reported previously the Talex is missing cameras that PGPSW picks up.

Yesterday I drove the length of the A90 and was warned by PGPSW that a camera which had been bagged and 'Not in Use' for many months was active again. There was no warning from the Talex and, if I'd been relying on the Talex, could have picked up a ticket.

Similarly, I spotted a new mobile outside Aberdeen on 23rd August and this was captured by PGPSW within 2 weeks. As of this morning the Talex did not warn of this active location. I accept that these empirical conclusions are not rigourously scientific but, for me, demonstrate that the Talex is far from infallible.

have you informed them? if you report their locations and are first to do so they will reward you with free subscription  i have never claimed any database is 100% accurate, none will be 100% accurate and althrough pgpgs is a good database there are mistakes including a few in birmingham where that gatso was 100 yds further down the road to the actual location marked by them. All gps locators in their manuals have the same disclaimer saying they and their database are not responsible if you get caught and basically not to rely 100% on them as their could be missing or inaccurate locatinos (cant remember it word for word but its basically covering their asses in case).

Does anybody know if Talex send you a reminder email when your subscription runs out?

I think mine runs out about now but I can't remember. How can I find out without actually phoning them or putting my Talex on-line?

it will let you know on the update as it checks before you download each update.

talex now on 8095

Just updated my Talex with latest database 8102, does anyone know why the file size would be the same as the 8095? - 3387744bytes.

i dont but ill try and find out by tuesday. it could possibly be that the same amount was added to been taken off, or no updates this week?

I do know that they are concentrating on making sure the locations that are in the database are all checked one by one to make sure that since they were entered into the database that speed limits for that camera havent changed which is probably harder to keep on than adding/removing them.

I have asked what is going on with this report a location page on the talex site, they are awaiting mr blair to agree and impliment it as they beleive its a good idea to ensure the database is kept up to date longer and also will issue rewards in the sense of free subscription.

talex update 8103 now out.

talex 8104 now up.

talex 8105 now up.

just noticed on novus site they are not doing any updates till 3 november and are stuck on 8103 iirc due to a background database problem. any other novus customer noticed any problems??

Talex Database 8106 now up, file size 3389064 as opposed to 8105 which had a file size of 3391224. Wonder is they have been removing some of the sites no longer in use?

thank god its 8106 i thought we were on to 8107 or 8111 and have tried again tonight, teach me for not checking.

I spoke to the database team at talex this week, theres been lots of temporary cameras removed this week, but also alot of specs have moved which can make the data look less in size if specs have moved from a junction etc.

No problems this end with this weeks database certainly has more locations marked than other ones.

Just an update that the latest version should be out in a few hours. Ive been having a chat to them and it turns out the hardest ones to keep on top of at the moment is roadworks. I was asked if i would mention if anyone sees any that are not on the database or know of any going up to give them a shout and they will reward you with some free subs if they havent already got them.

Thanks for the update Smstext, will keep an eye out for it coming up.

Latest Talex Database V.8112 now up, file size 3388992 bytes. Previous database size 3389064 bytes.

cheers, thought i would download the latest pgps one and was disappointed at the amount of live locations they have removed, just spent an hour going through their map of my area adding them back in again, god knows why they just dont leave it or ask locals in that particular area to say what is there and what isnt. certainly not giving me any confidence in their database if they keep removing locations.:(

Hi, My Talex subscription has expired and I'm thinking of updating my Talex Lite with the Novus software. A few questions :

Do I just download the Updater then plug in the Talex and download?

Can I revert to Talex software at a later date if I wish (and pay of course)

How do you access all the additional Novus features - is there a downloadable manual?

Thanks, Iain

Hi, you can update with novus BUT NOVUS IS A DIFFFERENT DATABASE and not the same database as talex. This is a common misconception. If you download the novus package and just install and update. But if you do have any subscription with talex left you will need to remember the code.

The features on a novus are the same as a talex full fat so should have all the details in your talex manual, however i think you can download a manual off the talex site.

However if you have found missing or new locations on the talex (change of speed limit etc) and report it to talex they will give you free subscription so if you do a lot of miles it might pay to get the talex subscription renewed and report any locations that are missing, temporary roadwork speed traps are the ones to watch for at the moment as they go up quicker than any of the database lot can keep on top especially if its a day after they went through checking (or camera moved 200 yds as the roadworks move down the road).

Hope that helps

How do you access all the additional Novus features ?

Thanks, Iain

I once copied this from the web site:

There are two buttons on the top of the Talex unit; ‘MENU’and ‘USER’.

The operation of the buttons depend upon whether or not the vehicle is moving.

Stationary Vehicle:

Menu button:

Press once: Displays the Date (mm:dd).

Press twice: Displays the trip distance (miles), resets to zero when power is removed.

Press three times: Displays the average speed for the trip (mph), resets to zero when power is removed.

Press four times: Displays the maximum speed for the trip (mph), resets to zero when power is removed.

Press five times: Displays the current number of GPS satellites tracked.

Press six times: Displays the current time.

Each display is shown for 10 seconds, then the display reverts back to the current time.

Pressing and holding down the MENU button for 5 seconds will force the Talexunit to restart. This should only be done if the Talex unit has been switched on for more than 5 minutes and does not display the current speed (or time if stationary).

User button:

Press once: The unit will display and announce the current position as a Latitude and Longitude.

Moving Vehicle:

Menu Button:

Press once: Displays the speed (mph) and a directional indicator.

Press twice: Displays the bearing (degrees).

Press three times: Displays the height above sea level (feet).

User button:

Press once: Stores the current position as a ‘User position’

Up to 200 positions can be stored in this way. If the user button is pressed within 10 seconds of a ‘User position’announcement, the Talex unit will remove the current location from the user position list.

the updater software also has the option to wipe your user positions if you want to start again.

talex 8113 now up.

anyone seen or used the Mini Coyote from Novus

anyone seen or used the Mini Coyote from Novus
WTF????

£199 for the unit and you are tied into a subscription. the device works on a mobile phone sim at £9.99 a month so quite an expensive bit of kit and how many new traps are there a day? ok i can see in the future it heading that way, but i see it with via bluetooth and through your own mobile phone. Also i thought using gps devices in france and CZ was against the law too? sure someone mentioned on here a while back if one is found in your car you can face hefty penaltys?
