spot on. my SWMBOs vectra started out as a boring club model, because thats all she could afford to buy and insure. so after a few years why should she sell her car which she knows the history of and likes, to then buy another car with a more powerful engine, which could be a duffer (or ragged to death, cut and shut or who knows what!) when instead she could buy a turbo engine and mod her own car?

I haven't modified my last two cars mainly because it would be pointless and a waste for money for me. 1st car was a 1.4 N reg Astra. Only thing I could do with that was run it into the ground and my current car (1.4 Polo) I've only changed the grill to a GTI one because it was going cheap at the time.

I have no problems with people modifying a car for whatever reasons they have. The three reasons I haven't modded properly yet are:

• Both cars I've owned have been far too slow to bother.
  
• Insurance is a sod at the moment me being 19
  
• I want to modify a car more in the way of performance upgrades rather than cosmetic enhancements.
  

I've waiting for the right car to do it on. I'm currently looking for a Fabia vRS which hopefully I will slowly improve and enhance by using some tips and ideas from this site. It will be a slow process as I can't do things all at once because of insurance and funds.

Also it doesn't matter what car it is it can be improved. Look at Ferrari's. They're always bringing out better, tweaked versions of their cars, likewise with Porsche, Lambo's, etc. Technologies improve all the time plus cost is a factor when a car is being built. I'm sure we would all love cars to come with Brembo brakes and adjustable suspension as standard but it wouldn't be cost effective for the company to do it. This is why you have tuning manufacturers who build these parts so if we so wish we can upgrade and improve the car. Modifying has gone so far now that there are Vauxhall certified garages who car modify the car (brakes, suspension,etc) and still keep the car's warranty.

Also Mini Coopers. Several tuning companies but the Works tuned Mini's keep their warranties. This is how much modifying has become more acceped by the maufacturers these days.
