Someone loves their car alot....

Featured Replies

but can anyone say if that car went past you with the cleaning its had or if it went past after going to the local drive through hand wash youd notice? cant say i could

Considering the amount of utterly crap paintwork around on most cars, and the complete lack of care that most seem to have lavished upon them, it's usually pretty easy to spot a car which is actually well cared for. Even most show cars have pretty crappy paintwork from scraping a dirty rag across them frequently.

I just find it amusing that on a car forum, where people are supposedly enthusiastic about cars and their maintenance that they can be so critical and derisory to other enthusiasts who find a slightly different way of enjoying their cars.

I only wish that I had both the time, skill and patience to get the level of finish that some of these guys are able to do. As it is, my neighbours think i'm nuts for giving the car a good wash and vac every couple of weeks with a wax every 6-8. That to many will seem excessive itself but getting a couple of hours to relax and get that done gives me satisfaction. That and I hate driving around in a crummy car. At the end of the day, it's more productive than sitting on your ****, looking at the internet all day (and I know that I am as quilty as anyone on here on that front).

ive seen this guys work before. he does this as a job, so why shouldnt he show whats possible and whats not?

oh and he does "drive" the car too. ive even seen it dirty before! :) why go for a astra? well he liked his old one so why go for anything else?

everyone is totally entitled to his/her opinion, but surely personal digs are a bit off? or are we still in the playground at school?? i wouldnt spend that sort of time detailing my car, but then i dont do it for a job. this detailing lark has taken off over here and people are getting paid SERIOUS money to detail cars. they dont just do your normal cars either, they will also refresh expensive classics, rare and mega expensive cars too. so if he had no proof how good he was at doing this job, do you think he would get near a few hundred grands worth of car?

im not saying you should get on the ground and worship him but can we not leave the personal comments out of the discussion? surely calling him insane, mad, or just plain whacko is enough to get your point across??

The firewall here, won't let me find the picture... but there's a well know one of a man, wearing women's underware with his **** up an exhaust pipe.

That's a different way of enjoying cars, and I'm sure most people would have something negative to say about that :)

So you're trying to compare the two? Give over.

what... this one?

Argh! My eyes!

To be honest (as a car nut), for me it's how engine of the the thing performs, can take corners and provides a satisfying drive in all conditions - not how shiney the paint work is....

My dream car is an Aston DB4, if I got the chance to own one I wouldn't give two hoots if it had swirl marks, had been washed with a sponge or given the once over with fairy liquid, as long as it had been serviced well and the engine and running gear was sound..

At the end of the day when your driving what's the thing what counts more, the state of the paint work or how the thing goes? Hence Briskoda not Niceshineyskoda or Detailskoda

If all you want to do is stand back and enjoy and nice blemish free shine just buy a shell of a car minus an engine and save a few bob..... and wax till your hearts content.

I'd say like so many things, It's diminishing returns. A car only ever washed in an automatic car wash, if at all, never waxed etc, will look very dull quickly. A car washed once a week or fortnight by hand, and waxed a few times a year will look much better. One cleaned to this (very impressive, but obsessive) level will not look the same order of magnitude better.

The server at work just gave up trying to download all those photos!!!!

I like to keep my car clean, but that is just OCD at it's best.

He strikes me as a bit of a know-it-all ****, who probably gets off on being a pain in the backside just for the sake of it.

I wonder if he's ever kissed a girl?

Likewise, although (further to all the comments about water purity), I'd like to be the person who sold him his ZERO parts per million reverse osmosis kit (presumably another quality purchase from the 'bay [linky] ) seeing how a) it's not possible to get completely pure water, and B) even the pharmaceutical industry can only get down to fractions of a ppm by using multiple deionisation / RO units in series.

AND THEN, I'd love to ask him why, after going to all that trouble with his reverse osmosis kit, he pours it into OPEN buckets and washes the car OUTSIDE where all sorts of particulate will blow into his precious 'purer than pure' water!

Still, there's one born every minute... :D

My best question would be why he allowed the garage to do the full PDI, and remove all the transportation gunk. Surely that has the best chance of doing the most amount of damage, when you're going to these degrees of paint correction?

You'd do what some customers of Polished Bliss (and probably other detailing companies) do, and get the car attended to while it's still at the garage and just off the transporter. Get the first stage of the detail done anyway. There's a great link on DW of a brand new Q7 that PB did at a dealer's. Will link later if I can find it again.

"Straight away he found some scratches that must have come from factory (pray i didnt do them). I had instructed my dealership Greens of Holborough not to touch the car upon delivery off the transporter even to the point of leaving all window stickers on!!!! They did this perfectly for me."

Fair enough; I'd missed that bit.

Cheers,

Steve

Just read a bit more of the thread & got to the engine bay detailing work.

The design & fabricating of the new reservoirs, intakes & airbox, etc is totally astounding.

The car is in concours condition. Way too much time & money wasted on it though.

Still, if it flicks his switch............

The time and money wasn't wasted if he enjoyed himself, in my opinion.

I'd rather spend my time doing other things but if this is what this guy wants to do then fair enough. I'll give him one thing, if ever I had a load of money to throw at my car I know I'd get him to detail it, :D

Yup that's the one!

Yeah I am. Both are "ways of enjoying your car" above and beyond what most people, even car enthusuasts, would describe as normal.

Each to their own, and it seems he enjoys himself and not causing anyone any harm so leave him be.

It wouldn't be me as up here you get gritters and mud on the road. My car has a satisfying amount of mud on it now you can hardly tell what colour it's meant to be. Doesn't have many swirls on it, so will probably give it a quick once over at the weekend.

Mine looks exactly the same pre and post wash.Grey.

I think perhaps if I had a dream classic I might be a bit like that.Maserati Mistral Spyder or something

I couldn't get the same passion over a modern car at all though.Wash, wax, done .only.

bet he would even let his car near the ring for worry of a stone chip!

Dunc

this guy is a bit far gone but there a vid on utube about a guy who washes cars for a living who works on lambo's and porches and the like, charges quite a lot for his services

YouTube - World's Most Expensive Car Wash

Really, though, with the time and money he's spent on detailing his car, would you rather have an immaculate Vauxhall Astra, or a dirty Porsche 911?

Edit: I've just read the 911 paint correction thread. he is truly a master craftsman!

That guy seriously needs to get out more.

I can appreciate a shiney car but there is a limit lol
