Country would be fine, you'd just have a large number of LWB transits, Printers and the similar all just under the 7.5 Tonne weight limit and all approximating what they think the speed limit should be.

Could increase prices a bit, but it would also create more jobs than would be lost in terms of the drivers.

Which is also 56mph for them as well, so now you will have 5 times the amount of vehicles on the road doing 56mph, and you think it's bad now??

Could increase prices a bit,

I would say so, with 5 times the amount of vehicles on the road moving the same amount of goods.

but it would also create more jobs than would be lost in terms of the drivers.

See above comment about increasing the transport costs - which then gets passed onto the customer - you and me.

a bit!!!!!!! the average artic carries 30 tons, the transit 1 - 1.5 ton,per day the artic needs to make £500 the transit £250 do the maths and tell me you could still afford to live i don't care how rich you are price increases on that scale would hurt, and this is before we go into the environmental aspects and the fact that 20+ transits take up way more room on the road than 1 maximum wieght artic, and they are not 7.5 toners at all they are 3.5 and thats only the big ones,7.5 tonners have the same limiters as artics, and the same problems on hills. So you really are commenting on somthing you know nothing about.

Not a chance!, but i get your point and agree what you are saying.

we wouldn't have a tautliner in the yard that didn't;)

You must be running some pretty small & light low / day cabs and something like Schmitz trailers then.

best i have done was 29T, Schmitz pulled by a topline.

From my experience, the average is between 26 and 29 T (various cabs and trailer combination)

I certainly think they should stop trucks between peak hours (3-9am, 5-7pm) and restrict overtaking on hills etc or where traffic volumes are high.

Works well in Germany.

thing is to keep prices down trucks need to be run 24/7,and i believe its more important to deliver goods than allow the average worker an extra 15minutes in bed, these peak times you mention are typical working hours for most,so i have another proposal, when schools are on holiday the major roads are a lot less congested seeing as the school run contibutes nothing to the econamy ban taking the kids to school in the car,and lay on more dedicated school buses, also ban anyone unemployed traveling in there cars between these hours, why pick on trucks? If anything we have more right to be there than you as a glance at the price of our road tax prices would make your eyes water.

And yes the taughts are schmitz on saf axles and man tga's,must admit when my topliner picks one up tare is up to over 15t:D

Or how about banning all cats from the roads between these times, unless you pay for a 'peak period' road tax disc - the cost of such disc? £500.

The average HGV driver is already working between 12 and 15 hrs a day anyway, so why put even more restrictions on them? Spread these restrictions to car users.

As Gary said better school buses to get the kids to school / home would help reduce congestion immensely.

I thought trucks actually had quite low road tax hence why car owners are so miffed at the VED rises?

How can they? 11hrs rest between shifts, and maximum 9hr shifts.

You are legally allowed to do a 16hr shift (if you have had 4 hrs off during it) or 15 hrs shifts, and can take 9 hrs daily rest.

The 9 hr shift you mention, is actually 9hrs driving (this can be extended to 10 hrs driving)

Having driven LWB vans a fair bit, I'm aware that they are no limited to 60mph on the motorways and in fact the limit for them is 70 on m/ways, 60mph on D/C and 50 on S/C (as opposed to 60, 50 and 40 for over 7.5 Tonnes)

UK speed limits

To be fair the original post by myself wasn't serious, but having spent too long in traffic jams caused by the dualing HGV's, I think the cost to the economy of all the delays, late workers and extra stress + associated health costs is probably far less than the extra cost on goods.

So good go up a bit and tax *could* (but won't) come down a bit.
