Duelling HGV's!

Featured Replies

this is still for vehicles exempt from speed limiters, but the sorry state is nearly every vehicle over 3.5t has a limiter fitted reducing it to 56mph max.

Not quite, you cant have two speed limits for the same type of vehicle on the same road.

A truck with a working speed limiter fitted can legally drive at 60mph on a motorway, granted this will only happen going downhill where the weight of the vehicle will kick in, overriding the limiter.

Seeing as neither side can agree I propose a new solution...

A cull of roughly 25% of the population, this will have a two fold effect on current traffic levels. Firstly as less goods are required there will be less trucks on the road and secondly less people means there will be less cars on the roads.

So queue and get your ticket to the most important lottery of your life. :D

A spiffing idea, I nominate middle lane hoggers, any scumbag caught carrying a knife, all those on the sex offenders register, and union members!

That should sort it ;)

The other option would be an old fashioned war.. with lots of canon fodder. :D

then if its a digitacho overspeed registers.

i also recommend to the list ch@vs and those who think they can modify a vauxhall corsa with tacky body kits from ford escorts that clearly dont fit with their parents kitchen stripe light half hanging off the bottom of the car.

That is quite possible, but you would not of broken any speed limits (or laws) by driving up to 60mph on a motorway.

im awaiting shifty to answer it as i know he will know the answer to that, but im sure if you got stopped on a vosa check then there would be problems as the vehicle by law is restricted to 56mph no matter what the motorway limit is.

i've been stopped by vosa 3 times now with the digital tacho and they have never once even checked it,i think its so innacurate that they know they would never secure a conviction, mine registers 2 minutes driving if the wheels turn only an inch,so i tend to do what i did before, and work by my timer regardless of what the stupid tacho says,my tacho also reads an overspeed when i'm on the limiter, which is daft, soit pretty much gets ignored all the time.

Well I'm not bothered about my overspeeds if I get stopped in the UK, as long as they under 60mph, I wont usually let it run past that. In Europe however, on the spot fines are issued for any infringement of the tacho laws. I know someone who recently got fined heavily for doing 3 10 hr driving days in a week. It was recorded 3 week prior to him being stopped in France!! They fined him anyway. Another flaw in the digi system is you dont write your start/finish on your card, so you cant prove where were you were at the time.

The speed limit of 60 mph applies to vehicles that were registered before 1988 I believe, as after that a speed limiter must be fitted to conform with the EU.

The 60 mph speed limit is for all HGV's irrespective of when they were registered, you are however correct in saying that a working sealed limiter must be fitted to vehicles registered after i think 1988.

Fair enough. Does anyone actually know why we cant do 60 then?

The spanish can do 100 kmh if they have abs fitted to the trailer. NJot relavent, just a fact :)

Not sure why, but then most of Europe has an 80kph speed limit for HGV's anyway, so for them its not an issue. Probably down to the EU sticking their ore in tho'. :finger:

I seem to remember the Spanish going to court over the speed limiters, they stated they were dangerous so they were allowed to remove them?

Not sure if that is true though.

I also hear the Dutch are doing a side by side Digi and regular Tacho comparison and compiling a court case too.

it was only the start of this year that 7.5t vehicles were also included in the speed limiter. i guess its a case of old laws not being deleted and new laws sitting over the top of them e.g. 60mph motorway but restricted to 56.

Not that im aware of, the last one i sat in at a dealers show day, didnt have one in. Im not sure wether it is the whole of europe, but i know that in the uk, the maximum road speed allowed on a motorway for all vehicles over 3.5 tonne is 90kph, this includes vans towing trailers. And the speed lallowed for coaches is 100kph.

I'm just thinking of reports I've read which said "Stavros had his fastest practice lap disallowed because his tacho showed a top speed of 101mph" (racing track rules require actual top speed under 100 mph). That suggested to me that you would need charts that showed up to and preferably slightly over 100mph for racing trucks.

Looks like they are coming out of hibernation again :thumbdwn:

It is very likely the Dutch lorry drivers will fight tooth and nail to get rid of anything that makes them less competitive. The roads are so full in Holland that there are many restrictions on them, and anything at all that makes them have to slow down or increases their costs relative to the competitors = bad for them.

Wonder if they are the same dutchmen that pull caravans ;)

Nah that is one of those diseases that unfortunately a lot of Dutchies appear to have

I have pulled a trailer of various sorts behind various different cars (and vans) but not a caravan. I do have family members that do though :o - hehe :)

Thing is, in Holland as it's flat they are not as much of a plague as over here. In some areas in the UK it can get pretty nasty though

That and Dutchmen seem to get confused by the idea of main roads with corners. ;)

Urm - plenty of corners in Holland, plenty of those blasted mini-roundabouts, and lots of junctions too...

Try Schiphol area for fun ;)

or we could have a new law - no trucks on any road between 8am and 7pm :)

(conveniently forgetting the amount of logistics + knock on business problems it causes) - i think car hating switzerland does it though ? someone might wanna correct me on that.

I agree. A lot of lorry drivers belong to the 'manoeuvre-signal-no mirrors' school of driving, *******!

Not counting junctions, I think I found 4 corners in the whole of Utrecht! ;)

OK, that will be me then ;)

Its actually between 2200hrs to 0600hrs when they have a driving ban, doesn't really help does it.

Personally i say ban all lorries period, how long before the country is on it's knees, 5 days? even Brown can't do it that quick - although he is trying :P
