Its all very good, although i bet the O/S isnt even close to being that smooth.. S60 devices aint the most graceful.. altho the later ones are getting there slowly

I have just been offered an upgrade but thought the N95 was good enough for now. :holmes:

That is more down to some companies using the lowest power processor they can get away with to save on power usage and cost.

Other phones throw a lot of CPU power at their phones, hence have a very short battery life or a huge battery.

The N96 with 16GB and a memory slot is now out anyway.

hmmmm... that looks remarkably like my HTC Tytn 2!

I haven't decided if i'm going to upgrade to an N96 then flog it on the bay or get a super cheap sim free contract... choices

The N96 comes with S60 5th edition which, if you watch some of the YouTube videos, seems to be rather quick.

What O/S is smooth on a phone though? Piephone is pretty slick, but I would argue that it's not even a smartphone as it doesn't do everything that a decent N series does. Sony Ericsson are still using an updated version of Speak n Spell to power their phones, and Moto and Samsung aren't much better TBH.

Having just had a really bad experience with WinMob on the Omnia, Going back to using the N95 is like relaxing in your favourite reclining chair. Sure the mechanism might be a bit sticky, but everything works as it should and I know where everything is.

I'm tempted by the N97 purely for shiney newness and gadgety goodness, It's gonna be the new N95. But I'm also considering the N85 for practicality as it's a smaller thinner lighter version of the N95.

I do somewhat agree with you now pinky...

After the F/W update on my Innov8 (Symbian 3rd ed fp1) and coupled with its nice 3d accellerated menu effects its now as smooth as butter.. and suprisingly the web is much faster and i will happily use it when i dont have my 2g piephone to hand!

Apart from the Memory size, is there much difference betwen the N96 and N95 8GB?

I know the N96 has a digital TV tuner built in, but thats a feature that won't work in the UK so may as well be missing.

I Like the look of the N97 and can see it being a good replacement for my N95 8GB providing the battery life is improved and it has a few extra features. Touch screen doesn't sway me either way as i've tried a few phones with it, and it has pro's and con's over normal handsets.

N96 uses a different chipset so is technically slower than the N95, but is more frugal at using power, altho nokia have cancelled out any benifit by shrinking the size of the battery too!

Sounds like they thought that one through...

I'll give the N96 a miss and wait and see what the N97 looks like in the flesh.

There is however the N85, which is "technically" the successor to the N95.. but its half the size with a excellent OLED screen!

It uses the same battery as the N95

Despite a slower CPU, because the OS is quicker, and uses paging memory, it's quicker than the N95 and N95 8gb in real world tests.

There are some side by side tests on youtube.

Do like the look of the '85; not sure I'd use the keyboard etc on the '97 really....

I'm thinking the keyboard will be a bit odd to use, but i expect it will get easier with practice.

I'm holding off on a decision until i can see a working one for myself in a phone shop, but it seems that most top spec phones are going the same way these days, so i might have to embrace the keyboard on one model or another at some point if i want to keep up

I know, it's unbelievable. I find it quite amazing that people are really that worried about it.

It's a phone...

I've gone and bought an N85 off of Ebay. I'll Let you know how exactly the same it is to an N95...

Some are done by some great bloggers and tech mags. The last test I saw was the iphone 3g v N95 v n95 8gb v N96 v storm v HTC v some old smart phone.

The conclusion was the iphone wasnt that much of a leap forward than the older handset. In the end IIRC the HTC won it based on around 10 tests/tasks.

The last FF update cleared, my history, so dont have the link anymore. Might have been a stuff mag test, as view lots of them.

We're at a point now where phones are rapidly catching up with computers. When the N95 was released it broke new ground as it eventually (after some FW improvements) demonstrated how much you could do with a compact phone.

Its proven to be a major success for Nokia. Everyone talks about the next iPhone killer but I think Nokia had the iphone beaten before it was even released, apart from slickness of the interface.

Now there has to be a balance between feature richness and usability. The iPhone wins on usability but looses badly on features. the likes of the Samsung Omnia has features galore but falls down on usability. Nokia N series seems to fall somewhere in the middle, hence the success they have had.

You either fall into one of 3 camps

- I need a phone that makes calls and is mobile.

- I need a phone that has multimedia and web browsing capabilities but will fit in my pocket.

- I need a touchscreen Cray supercomputer that just happens to make calls.

The N97 is specced up to the hilt, but look at the effin size of it! If Nokia can keep on developing good looking phones that make do with S60 3rd edition, I think a hell of a lot of people will remain happy.
