Im Dan from Lancashire, i currently own a 1995 standard Punto GT Turbo. I'm looking into getting either an Octavia vRS, or a Golf GTi Mk.4 1.8T, the Octavia being my first choice. Hope to speak to you all soon!

it might help haha. I know that the Octavia has more power and equipment as standard, but the golf is 2 insurance groups lower. It's all down to insurance really, as i'm only going to be 20 in October, with 2 years NCB. Ive been told by one or two people there's a chance that the Skoda may cost me even less than the punto to insure (the punto is grp. 14) because of security factors, and the fact that its a saloon etc.

any thoughts on this?

Get a Fabia RS and get it chipped....... gp 9 insurance and not much in it between it and an octy under 100mph performance wise

Welcome to the forum... The Punto GT takes me back. I bought a brand spanker in 96 in metallic midnight blue and kept it for 4 years. I loved that car.

Yeah, the cars great fun,(mines midnight blue too lol) it's just a little too brittle. I want something a bit bigger and more comfortable. Im also keen on the tuning potential of the vRS engine, that's why the 2nd choice is the mk4. GTI 20vT

Aye, 16D if i rmemeber right? The punto is 14, as is the golf. But with the punto being a hatchback, and easier to nick etc. im hoping that there wont be that much of an increase. I dont think the insurance group numbers mean as much as they used to, i think they take the car itself into account a lot more now.

Errm.. the Octy is a hatchback too. :confused:

Is the Golf you are looking at the 150bhp or 180bhp version? I'm sure VW made both as well as the 2.0 from the MK3. (The Octavia uses the 180 engine)

That would explain the difference in the insurance groupings
