Mine currently has the standard 512meg and is fine with XP SP3.

I saw videos for the upgrade and quite frankly didn't fancy all that screwing.

Called off to ToysRus the other day and had a play on the 901 XP version and the larger 1000 model they had on display. Must say i prefered the smaller dimensions of the 901. Seems really quick at openng apps and the display is gorgeous!!! Even shut it down and then powered it back up and times were very very quick. the webcam looked to be surprisingly good quality too. Checked what version of XP it was running and found it was running SP3 and still had around 1.4gb of space left on the C: drive with around 7gb left on the D: drive. Was a bit pricey in ToysRus as i had already got some online places saved which had them at low prices.

Just been on today and only one of them has them still in stock!!!! It's meant to be the mrs' birthday present in April but she'll be getting it early as i've just ordered one as only 12 left in stock so didn't want to risk not getting one. Gone for the white version as it's for the mrs although think i prefer the white to the black anyways. Got it for £239 inc. free delivery.

Also ordered 2gb of RAM too for £20 so as to upgrade from the 1gb standard RAM to 2gb. Already have an 8gb SDHC card sat doing nothing so that's the storage topped up to the same 20gb as the Linux version.

Cheers

Dave.

Sounds good Dave

Finally got my extra memory fitted, what a PITA job it is! Somehow i have ended up with a spare screw

Always good when that happens :D

n00b! lol.. not even i managed to finish with sparebits!

Ok, a new question for ppl who have bought one, what's the buffer and lag like on playing an Mpeg2/4 video file?

I read back through the instructions twice, i even had another colleague look and neither of us could even see where another screw could have come from

Nothing rattles though. :D

Depends... It plays normal definition stuff fine

It will struggle with 720p stuff, although if you watch alot of that its worth paying the 12quid for COREAVC which is more efficent than the usual x264/xvid decoders so suits the AAO quite well.

I noticed my mates one struggling with a bit of footage the other day, I was thinking of replacing my portable DVD player with one, until I saw that, thx for the honest answer, and it looks like I'll wait until the new graphic chip ones arrive.

Well i'm writing this on the mrs' new eee pc901. :D

Have to say it's a great little machine. Whisper quiet as no HD and very quiet cooling fan. Upgraded the RAM to 2gb in less than 5 mins. Stripped out all the crap that comes with the machine and also the extras in windows. Have run windows update and have only installed one other app, (firefox), on the C: drive as it runs a little faster on there. Still have just over 1gb of space left on the C: drive. Also installed the Asus app that cleans up all thhe windows temp files on boot up so it keeps the free space to a maximum.

Installed openoffice to save a little more space compared to MS office 2007 and also stops extra office updates coming through on windows update. Also popped the 8gb SDHC card in so have 16gb of storage at the mo. Rather than go for networking one of the dvd/cd drives on the PC or laptop i've installed Daemon Tools Lite so as to create a virtual drive on the netbook that then runs images of CD's/DVD's created on the PC or laptop and then copied to the SDHC card.

Installed xvid codecs and played back avi's perfectly well full screen. Installed media player classic after seeing mention of it on websites but think i'll uninstall it as media player 9 runs fine.

All in all a very nice little item and the mrs loves it. Got her the pearl white version which also looks pretty good whenn the light catches it.

Cheers

Dave.

Nice one Dave. Sounds impressive

arh dam it...

I've been toying with one of these for a few reasons... carting my macbook pro around is a pita. Keeping the macbook pro in sync with with the home machine is a pita, even with mobile me.

I spend most of my day in the console or a text editor... then my boss got one, not the 901.

Then we were talking about mobile working, we all have data cards and finally got the dam thing working under linux... another step closer. Then the brainwave of all brainwaves.... Col, why don't you ssh into your mac at home and work on that.

Well stone me with a long life lightbulb... So I'm pretty much on course for one now, either ssh or forward x11 this that, whatever will be fun.

I'd dropped onto the 901 with a linux install, the atom and ssd is just too easy, heck it might even keep up on a vnc connection.

Can I just clear up ram, 1.5Gb or 2Gb?

The only major pita is linux... I use textmate alllllllll day and tm is not on linux..emacs is but, heck sandscript seems easier.

Going to go digging now :) you swines. This forum costs me too much money :)

Hi Colin...... I was toying with the Linux version but went for the XP version instead as they are the same price. The difference is you get 20gb on the Linux and 12gb on the XP version. I had an 8gb SDHC card so still have 20gb even with the XP version. Our Canon wi-fi printer didn't support Linux so that was a major factor in going for the XP version.

Standard the 901 comes with 1gb of RAM in it's only RAM slot but i upgraded ours to 2gb (which is the max).

Any other info give us a shout.

Cheers

Always a nuisance having to learn a new application that resembles but isn't quite the same as the old favourite.

Not my part of the wood really, but I've heard Linux geeks mention Kate, jedit, ScITE as workable applications.

Bought a USB DVD-ROM off ebay as i had got bored trying to get a working copy of the restore DVD to boot off a USB device.....

Decided to perform a restore as i'd botched a couple of app installs which had mistakenly been installed onto the C: drive rather than the D: drive and had left files on there even after uninstall so lowering the free space to around 800mb.

Did the restore and then did a better job of removing all i didn't need and installed all my apps onto the D: drive and now have a steady 1.4gb+ of free space on the C: drive.

Next thing to try is to install Windows 7 on the SDHC card and see how that runs.

Cheers

Dave.
