Strange Noise, Please Help!

Featured Replies

Before anyone asks, I did a search and there was ONE thread covering this "problem", but didn't really address it properly.

This morning as it was raining, I was using my wipers. I suddenly noticed an audible "click" emanating from the dashboard whenever the wipers started their cycle of clearing the screen, and again when they finished. So if I had them on intermittent, there were two clicks for every wipe, and when I moved the stalk onto non-intermittent, then it would click before the first wipe, and again after I switched them off as soon as the wipers had returned to their "off" position (so the click has nothing to do with the movement of the stalk itself). To be clear, there is a CLICK, then the wipers move to clear the screen, then they return, and the CLICK happens again, but not for every wipe (unless on intermittent), only before the first sweep, and then after the last sweep.

So in the other thread (back in '04) the guy was asked if he'd not heard this noise before, and the majority of people answering said they didn't notice because they listen to their stereos and it probably drowned the noise out. One person seemed to think there was a faint clicking noise and this was normal. Now this morning I didn't have my stereo on, and the click was clearly audible (and therefore somewhat annoying). I don't always have my stereo on, so I am almost convinced this clicking noise is new. Can any other Fabia owners (mine is a vRS) confirm whether this clicking noise (which appears to emanate from the dash) is heard in their cars as well and is therefore normal, or whether I should have this looked at.

My car will soon be going in for a second attempt at sealing the rear door carriers, and as my warranty is up in March, I may as well make sure everything is taken care of if there is a problem before it starts costing me money.

Cheers!

probably noise comes from fuse. I've never heard it in my car, but i heard it many times in old cars, and it's normal for them.

maybe it can be voltage problem, but i'm not sure, because i never heard noise from my dashboard.

It sounds like it's the wiper relay clicking over as current is redirected. I'd say its nothing to worry about. You could get skoda to change it but might be no different.

Regards Chris

I hear the noise in ours. Its the wiper realy clicking you will only really notice it on manual wipe and intermittent. you could get them to change it but relays will make a noise (unless they are solid state) so unlikely to remove the sound.

The noise is definitely common, but never AFAIK loud enough to be a nuisance. Is the noise as obvious with the stereo OFF? I'm wondering if there's a bad earth connection somewhere that means the (minute) spark generated when the relay opens and closes is interfering with the stereo output and causing a pop / click to be played through the speakers...???

Defo wiper relay, normal.

Cheers peeps, as it was raining YET AGAIN today (gotta get those door carriers resealed!) I was using my wipers on the commute into work, and I'd say I've convinced myself the relay has probably always made that clicking sound. Was very faint and I did have my stereo on this morning, so it's not loud enough to be annoying.

If anything I was amazed I could hear it as well as I THOUGHT I did yesterday, what with the usual road and engine noise on top of everything else, it just seemed to be extra-audible yesterday AM. Maybe I'm getting paranoid as the warranty run-out period approaches. :)

Your replies were very much appreciated!
