cant remember off hand, but its the letter at the end of the size written on the sidewall of the tyre

W , 205/45 wr 16

W , 205/45 wr 16

yup. Anything lower than a W would probably invalidate your insurance as they'd be less than the manufacturers recommended spec

QUESTION: I have just been to my local tyre dealer and got 2 Uniroyal rainsport 2's fitted. Now, i have just got home and noticed that they have fitted V speed rated tyres, not W's as was taken off the car!

I phoned them on Saturday and they had to order them in for me, they asked the size of tyre, but didn't ask me for a speed.....

Should i go back to them? do i have a leg to stand on if i do?

Cheers

Steve

V is speed rated to 149 MPH W to 168 MPH so unless you have a crazy remap or drive off mountains V should be fine, BUT, check with your insurance company to be sure.

Yeah i figured that technically they would be just fine, it was just the comments earlier in the thread about insurance issues that were worrying me.

I'll give them a bell....

cheers

steve

The main annoying bit about asking for tyre prices at some tyre places is the arrogant "educated" tyre person that informs you that the speed rating does not matter as your tyres are quite old and his best buy (needs to shift them quick?) is vastly better than your's were new - so its okay just to buy them! I don't quite understand the "Z" rating though, it looks like its a lower rating than "W" on paper, but in reality, "Z" rated tyres are more "sport" orientated than their equivalent "W" rating. I've made that mistake by moving back to "W" rated tyres on my Passat V6, but the general "feel" on the road is different and the tyres "look" narrower - like my original ones again. I thought the "Z" rated ones were great and inspired a lot of confidence - okay they were Dunlops and the original "W"s were Goodyear and my new "W"'s are Michelin - but I think that I missed a trick by not buying "Z" rated Michelins to replace the "Z" rated Dunlops.

Of course only use the correct load rating as well!

I wouldn't of thought the difference would be because of the speed rating. Pretty sure the speed rating just determines how much pressure the tyre can be submitted to without popping. The handling/feel will be down more to the brand and the type of rubber same with road noise too

if you drive off a mountain the tire rating in the car would be the least of your issues :rofl:

It's not the driving off of a mountain that is the problem . . . it is hugging the ground that smarts a tad.
