Problems with first gear

Featured Replies

its happened a few times, not enough to be a real pain in the ar*e but enough to make me want to ask about it.

Has anyone else had problems getting their octy into first gear from a stand still ?

imagine if you will your sat at the traffic lights and they go to green, you push the clutch in and attempt to select first gear, the gear level moves in the right direction but wont engage the gear, you have to release the lever and clutch and go again, second time its fine every time.

Very occasionally it struggles to select reverse and the same has to be done.

i read somewhere on here that someone got the dealer to change the gearbox oil as they had had problems simular to this but i couldnt remember the exact in's and out's.

Thanks peeps.

Same is happening to me .. It has appeared over the last 5K ish miles..

It is a pain as I don't like to sit at Traffic lights or on crowded motorways

with the car always in 1st gear... Also the behaviour of the gear change is

sometimes clonky even though I try to blip the throttle on up shifts..

Strange..

Cheers

I have this problem with mine, but add to that the times it won't let me take it out of reverse as well!!!!

Maybe only afflicts black Octy vRS's?

Think you might find this is a recurring theme amongst many a VAG car at some point in it's life, and possibly all german cars I've known...

To date, I've experienced this very same problem, and the same solution in:

VW MkII Golf 1.3 (D reg)

Vw MkII Polo Ranger 1.3 (E reg)

BMW 316 (M Reg)

BMW 520 (T reg)

Skoda Octavia 2.0 (W reg)

VW Passat 1.9 TDI PD (X Reg)

Maybe down to a particular gearbox supplier? Clearly not a batch issue though, seeing where I've encountered it over the years.

I've experienced this as well and feel it may be gearbox oil related as only appeared at 16,000 miles. I usually solve mine that if 1st will not engage by olving it down into second then back into first and it works correctly everytime. The Fabia seems to be to have a much more precise gearchange than any other car i've driven including an Octavia and a Polo, the Octavia had a nice change though was a bit more rubbery.

It's most likely the synchros not working properly and since they rely to some extent on the gearbox oil it's logical that the problem should be alleviated by a change of oil. First is the worst because it requires the layshaft to spin at the highest speed.

Blipping the throttle should be for downshifts to keep the layshaft spinning, not upshifts...

at least i'm not on my own and i also have trouble occasionally with gettin out of reverse...

i'll have a chat with the dealers and see if they have had anyone else complain about this.

Cheers guys

I blip the throttle to make smoother upshifts..

cheers

Dazz - I can't quite see why, but if it works for you ....

Forgot to mention that my worst gearchange is usually 4th to 3rd.

1st to 2nd is quite clunky (for want of a better word) at times as well, it has caused me to miss the shift on occasion...

  • 4 weeks later...

This exact same thing happens on my Vectra right now. Its certainly annoying, but ive never really thought twice about it. Until now

Mine does it too! And mine's red :D

Just my two pence worth, being that ive only had my (second hand) L&K for about 7 wks now. But ive found that being a little gentle with the gear stick when shifting into 1st(slight nugde only to left then up) gear solves it. Having only been used to older cars previosly to my octy, i was more use to err shoving the gear stick in quite hard, after pushing to the left, something that i have found the octy dont like, and its then when it usually wont engage 1st - likewise with reverse.

Hope it help

This is not a fault. It can and does happen with every car, and the answer is always declutch and reclutch. Should only happen when moving from staionary not if you change down to first (rare though that would be).

привет как дила?

You need to realign the shifter - there is a blurb here on how to do it:

MkV Sigma 5 Shifter Install

I've had that problem - usually with 3rd, and I just tighten up the front/rear connection at the gearshifter proper by a couple of mm and it goes away. Also a little nylon-safe grease at the actual shift linkage makes it so smooth....

WTF????

Gearbox oil change - cheap as chips

WTF????

According to Google: "greetings as calling"??? What a funny place to make a post - a thread that's been dormant for three years!!!

But while we're at it, the gears on SWMBO's Fabia won't go into 1st from a standstill about once every week. She just puts it into the 2nd gear gate, keeps the clutch in, and then it goes into 1st no problem...

Same problem here,

got the 2004 red RS Combi and putting in first gear is a problem. It feels like it is moving forward a little but then, completely locked.

For me, what works is declutch and a blip then push it right back in there :P.

only works if you release pressure on the stick.

Has anyone approached a dealer or talked to a Skoda representative

If you have an octy, changing the lower engine mount helps no end but you need a powerflex one. It will shake the crap out of you first time its fitted but softens up to the point where you don't even know it s there. Only about

Is a bit odd innit

I'm thinking some pimply Russian teenager has written some sort of bot that logs onto forums (fora?) at random and makes the above 'amusing' post...?
