I sympathise with Barrie here - he's trying to be objective. Oilman is trying to be helpful, but at the same time would like to shift his products. Briefly you could sum up this thread thus:

Oilman: hey, you modders - you need to use good oil in your engine. Trust me, I'm an expert.

Readers: ooh that's interesting - do you know any good oils to use?

Oilman: yes, as it happens I do, and what's more I sell them.

Barrie: whoa! Hang on a minute ....

Change the word oil for..

Chip/Brakes/DV/Suspension/Tyres/Cleaning Products and you can say that about any of our suppliers.

I say again, Guy has been open & honest, so i don't see why Barrie is hassling him.

Unless he knows something he's not telling us.

Nick , I understand all that .............but barrie really seems to have the bit between his teeth on this one .... :D

BTW what oil is he selling

Me neither - I just said I sympathise. It's easy to get carried along on a wave of enthusiasm. Oilman has sown a seed, and now lots of folk are thinking "eek, is my oil good enough? Better ask that nice Oilman for a quote on some of that stuff he was recommending. What was the name again ..... "

Edit: this might be better discussed offline...

And that sums it up. Oilman is not a monster, simply a very plausable and shrewd salesman.

Most of the time on forums you have individuals offering advice as they see it together with firms advertising their products. It is normally very clear which is which.

Here the distinction is being blurred with an opportunity for punters to be... well misled I suppose.

I am no oil expert but i can spot a well disguised selling strategy at 100 paces.

My observations have been blunt, however my objective was only to demonstrate that things are not always quite what they seem.

Happy Motoring

Barrie , thanks for the reply ...............I have no problem with your point of view ...........just wondered if it was a personal thing .........obviously not ......and I can see your point as well :)

Hopefully it all makes for entertaining reading :)

I'm sorry if I've offended anyone for trying to help lay bare some of the home truths about oil. This was not my intention.

I have done my best to post informative and factual articles here and not to push my products (which actually cover well known 5 brands) but merely advise people if they ask a question.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and it's a public forum so that's fair do's, however if my advice is neither wanted or welcome then I'm happy that people say so and I'll get me coat.

If advice is needed about anything related to oil then I'll also happily stay, it's up to you really whether I continue.

Cheers

Guy

Guy,

Stick around. 1 objection does not mean you should leave.

Very informative thread! I would like to thank oilman for the considerable amount of time spent typing up all that stuff about oil...maybe one day I will understand what its all about, maybe even buy some of 'his' oil.

Personally I would like to hear a straight answer to a straight question :

Which oil should we use for a modded Octy vrs?

... and a modded Fabia VRS, and a modded 1.8T non VRS, and a modded PD110 Fabia and .....

I cant recall seeing anything on this thread by Oilman thats says "you must buy my oil to be safe", as I see it hes trying to give an informed opinion, and maybe open peoples minds to their oil, also a good discussion on the subject for which I personally am gratefull to him

For what its worth...stick around Oilman, I seen the advice you have given on other forums, and its GOOD ADVICE

No, we never said that either, Mavrik, just a little subliminal messaging, maybe.

It's all out in the open so that's cool as far as I'm concerned.

I echo the sentiment - stick around oilman, it will be good to have answers to the frequent questions about oil.

Thanks chaps.

I will be hanging around for a while, as longs as I have my Skoda anyway ;)

I note you have a 928, I have one of these, a 928 S4 lots of fun. :D

Cheers

Guy.

I thinks it's nice to have some informed opinions once in a while after all this is a forum where people can speak freely about there experiences with different products.

me too,my car was filled with synta gold, fully synth last week, and now i'm told on here it doesn't meet vw standards,if so why is a dealer using it,when they knew my car was chipped, car is on 38 k miles and is fixed service every 10 k.what what do i do ?bin it and buy somethig else, stop worrying cos the last car i had went for 130 k miles with cheap jack oil

I think you have to use decent oil because of the turbo and the need to lubricate the turbo correctly. Just my thoughts !!

just been goggling "synta gold fully synthetic"obviously brought up alot of VAG forums, only one person didn't recomend it,too thin for a 16v motor, every other turbo owner from 1.8t to UR quattro said it was good stuff.

5W 40 btw(i didn't know this)

Thanks chaps.

Were you at Beaulieu in May? Or at Tilford on Saturday? :)

Can't afford an S4 - much more to go wrong on them. What colour/year?

What oil do you put in it? :P

JBS used fully synthetic on my car last week.

Hi guys. I used Castrol RS 0 - 40w in my octi. I was just wondering if this oil will be able to give the proper protection to my engine.

I was not a Beaulieu, however I lent it to my Father who took it. :ashamed:

It is a Silver 1988 S4, colour coded spoiler and body trimings, 18 inch cup wheels, larger grooved and ented discs and my favorite the RMB exhaust. :agree:

What oil? my finest Silkolene Pro S 5w-40. The common mistake with these V8s is to put a thick oil in it, this one does not need it, it will run on a 0w oil with ease because the engine and block are just that well engineered.

Yes this is true, however with these "new breed" of engines that work on a low energy and low emision principal need this fully synthetic oil of around 0w viscosity. This is because the oil is very easy for the engine to pump around, thus using less energy and incrasing MPG. You also need a good quality oil because the engines burn at a much higher temp and you need an oil that is not going to break down with this heat such as a fully synthetic 0w and the result being less emisions as they are now burnt up.

Castrol RS is a good oil, it has to be to get to those viscosity grades. However the Castrol Formula SLX 0w-30 is better as it uses superior base stocks. The Mobil 1 0w-40 is a good one though, they use a good base stock for this oil.

The VW specs are there to be passed, Oil manufacturers pay to have their oil approved, it is similar to the tests that regulate say drinks. Bear with me here, Tescos own brand Coke Cola passes all the tests for human consumption, however is still made to a cost and therefor inferior to the well known brand CokeCola yet they both pass the same tests, this quality issue combined with marketing makes the oil world a merky one.

I very much doubt there is any difference in cost between own-brand pop and Coca Cola. The big difference is that Tesco works on small margins, and doesn't spend anything like as much money as Coca Cola on advertising its pop. You're paying for the marketing, people!

The same is true for a lot of liquids (perfume is another good example: perfumes all cost next to nothing to produce, but the bottles are hellishly expensive, even to the manufacturers!)

Surely, as long as the oil meets the specs that the manufacturer recommends, the best thing you can do is change your oil more regularly? After all, the engineers 'sign off' engines against an oil spec: if you choose a different spec, you may hit unpredictable problems (such as oil eating gaskets, as has happened to a couple of manufacturers, when dealers started using fully synthetics...)
