Rear washer jet not working

Featured Replies

Our rear washer has stopped working at least four times now in four years, twice whilst it was under warranty. I watched the guy perform on it and thought no way am i going to do that.First he took off the boot lid trim erm thats ok, next took out side carpet trim over wheel arch erm thats ok last pulled out jet replace with new one, now ok.Rough time doing all that , one hour to replace jet ten minuets including going to store.Last couple of times i pulled out jet and blew through, funny enough today its stopped again.

Astonishingly (given this thread) my rear washer has popped off inside the back door of my Octy estate. I wonder whether trying to use it when its frozen at the nozzle pushes the tube off.

Anyway, its very annoying and I'd like to try to fix it myself. Is it easy to get the trim off (and back on) without breaking anything? If so, can anyone tell me how to do it?

Very grateful

Well done to Stubax. I have just tried what he described in post 12 above and it worked a treat.

The amount of muck I cleared out of the jet nozzles after soaking them in very hot water for an hour was amazing.

I have put a full bottle of the -70 degree screenwash in the reservoir now and toppped that up with a mixture of water and meths. I might get a clear screen for a while.

Pull the cover off the base of the wiper arm and pull the washer jet off (its a push fit), now try the washers and see if you get a vertical jet of water...

I just checked mine today and on my FL estate, the jet is at the TOP of the rear window, integrated into the top brake light, not at the bottom where the wiper arm is. The jet is also a conventional single jet of water squirting down onto the rear window rather than fanjet style like on the front washers.

Does this mean they have potentially fixed this issue on FL models, or was the washer always at the top on estates?

It's at the top (left of high level brake light) on my pre FL estate...

Right, maybe it's only down the bottom on the hatch then?

My hatch has the washer jet incorporated in the base of the wiper arm, and squirts towards the end of the wiper blade, no matter what position the blade is on the glass.

Thanks, so the design of the washer on the hatch and estate is different

Good shout Stubax :)

Finally got round to looking at mine today and was greeted with a vertical jet of water having removed the nozzle.

Pull the cover off the base of the wiper arm and pull the washer jet off (its a push fit), now try the washers and see if you get a vertical jet of water, if you do its the washer jet blocked. This has happened to me twice now and probing the jets (there are 2 of them) with a pin didnt clear them. It seems that if the washer is unused for a while the fluid solidifies meaning a good clear out is required. Obviously if you dont get the vertical water jet the pipe has probably become detached.

Hi

I've got the problem on my 56 Octavia hatch. Can anyone tell me how to get the jet nozzle out in "simple" terms ;). Do i have to take the boot trim off, or can I do this from the back of the car?

Thanks

Its simple to remove the washer jet itself, but that may not be the cause., that said its the first place to start.

- There is a cap covering the wiper arm nut on which the arm pivots.

- Gently pull the cap away from the wiper arm. A little force is needed.

- This will expose the wiper arm retaining nut and will also reveal jet.

- The jet itself is just a push fit and should come away with ease.

This wasn't causing the problem with mine, if it doesn't for you, then the next place I would look it behind the carpet in the left hand side of the boot.

Another thanks for the fix in this thread. The rear wash on my newly acquired 2006 Octy wasn't working properly. It is now.

Have to give some points to Simpsons Skoda in Preston, took my 54reg Octy in for a service, mentioned that the rear washer had stopped working and that I thought it was probably the 'usual' hose popping-off issue and asked them to take a look if it wouldn't cost me (skinflint I know!) - Had never worked since I got the car this time last year.

Got car back after service and all working fine, no charge, no mention of using the wrong washer fluid. Good service guys, thanks.

Typical Simpsons, from what I can see. Cannot fault them at all.

Had the same from Willis Motor Company. Both my mate and I had the same problem. Both sorted out in no time and no cost as under warranty. The only problem was it did cost us both a lot in the long run, as we walked out with with 2 new Octavia VRS LE's. I'm dreading to think what I'll end up with if this one does the same thing :giggle:

I had the same problem. Maybe the pictures took will help also.

But I don't seem to find a solution for the clogged nozzles

I cleared the clogged nozzle on my car by pulling it off the rear wiper (It press fits into the end of the shaft the wiper turns on) and blasting it through with compressed air.

Cheers Stubax, you've saved me from a lot of shouting and swearing and probably saved me the expense of replacing broken trim.

Thank god I found this, I was about to start ripping the insides out of my car to find where the pipe had split, and it was just the nozzle!

Does anybody have any tips on how to get the left hand side boot lining out to check the pipe hiding there behind the cd changer? Any hints would be welcome.

Cheers,

Ed

If anyone is into modelmaking, a good fix for the clogged nozzle problem is one of the small "numbered" drills we use. I used a #68 (looks like about 0.5 mm) in a pinvise and it bored the rubbish out of the two jet holes very easily. You'll probably find you have to do this once or twice a year - they seems prone to clogging, but less so now I'm on real VAG screenwash.

I’m slowly getting there in that I’ve followed the advice and reconnected the joint behind the CD; but the joint in the hatchk must also be separated as while some water now comes out of the nozzles, must if it runs down behind the trim and into the spare wheel well. I have checked the nozzles and they're clear.

Can anyone talk be through the removing of the trim? There’s a note early in the thread that it’s a pig to do and wanted to guard against breaking something.

A small point on removing the plastic plugs which hold the trim in place by the CD exchanger; I found that if I levered from two sides that they popped out quite easily. Just levering from one side seems to increase the resistance to come out.

I just repaired my rear washer following the instructions in this thread, thanks very much! I repaired my girlfriends Lupo a while back with the same problem, they really should improve those silly connectors.

These jets are small - better to use a bristle from a wire brush or a strand from a guitar string or bike brake cable. A pin or needle will likely just enlarge the jet & maybe give spray pattern 'issues'!
