how easy is it to change sump on octy VRS

Featured Replies

Hi All

Done the sump today on a hump back bridge, took it a bit too fast and got all 4 wheels off the ground. Only problem was landing !

Unfortunatley the sump took a bit of a thump and has split in 2 places.

Can it be taken out easily on the drive way if i raise up the car enough.

What tools would I need.

Thanks

Gaz

Change of title more apropriate.

Oops.

Who took the photo ????

I didn't know regular cars can do that.

"A bit too fast"

Good work my man

You can almost smell the fear ;)

Good job the wheels were straight when you landed

Good effort!

Too Infinity and beyond!

Last time i did something like that it was in a Mk4 Astra Hatch. Didn't enjoy it quite as much as i would have thought.

Needless to say i've not done it since LOL!

Should be straight forward to change the sump.

That kind of reminds me of a previous briskoda drive out in the countryside where a simillar thing happened. Picture the scene, a line of broken octavias all with holes in their sumps.

Nice! Good to see. Now when i get told to grow up i can show people your pics (as long as you don't mind) and tell them just to be glad that i don't own a vRS (YET).

Can't say i have done it but can't imagine it being that hard as long as you remember to get all the bits required, but that's quite simple just remove the sump and gasket, check the threads and heads on the bolts (hopefully none have snapped), take them to the parts shop and ask for X amount of each, not forgetting the plug and 'O' ring for the sump.

NOW DON'T BE SO CHILDISH AND ACT YOUR AGE!

did a similar thing in my vRS and knackered the engine cover and oil filler spout up - done on a level crossing in newquay on a hill, levels out for the level crossing so did about 40mph leaving it, back end shot up and the front came down pretty hard, my mate behind me said he good see all the underneath of my car, with hindsight rather stupid

If your smacking the sump you want something a little less harsh, gentler and more speed :P get just as much air but with a lot smoother landing, I know of a certain area of about 8 sqaure miles and all private roads with in a forest, crest of a hill there i hit at 130mph and took off, i'm soo glad I landed with straight wheels

anyway back to topic, not done the job my self but it looks pretty straight forward, everything seems pretty accessible when i've been under mine. but then again you never know till you come to actually do it. do you know any one with a pit in there garage you could get access to? would make the job a lot easier

Brilliant pictures :D Entered you second photo into the photo comp on here, If you want it removing let me know and I apologise. Good picture though, sums up for me what vRS driving is about, fun :D

I take it you didnt think youd get that much 'air'? Been in an old BMW 316 (passenger, not driving) hitting a single lane width bridge like that, all wheels off the ground only to realize there was a car starting up the other side. Clipped mirrors and brown pants time. The wheels werent probably as off the ground as yours, I think I wouldnt be typing this if they had :S

my guess is, photographer doubled up as lookout/flagman

I didn't know regular cars can do that.

well obviously they can; but not without consequences.

If those are the photos of the "actual incident" i'd be counting myself very lucky if "all" i'd done was the sump!!!

I can see the whites of his knuckles & smell the fear from here!!

I'd agree with others.

Suspecting you have 18" zeniths, I'd get the alloys professionally checked. I bet you've crack one of them as well.

I was in a car with someone that did a similar jump, only problem was the idiot driving decided it was a good idea to try and steer in the air...........

Consequently 2 full rolls, 1 lampost, 1 brick wall and some nice ladys front garden and several hours down A+E we were all fine, car had a little more than a bit of sump damage though!

Does anyone even care about the OP's question :rofl::rofl:

hmm and theres me having done similar jumps a fair few times and not had any problems till i took on a level crossing, the passat isn't as eager to fly but it'll do it :P

Hind sight is a wonderful thing ! should have kept to about 30 not 45 !!

My son took the pictures and acted as lookout, the road is in the middle of nowhere and is rarley used, not prizes for guessing why.

The only other thing that is noticable is the drivers side lights dont work, hopefully just dislodged the connection.

It's at the garage now ready for the morning, will keep you posted.

Thanks for entering into photo comp, you won't see many like that !!

No problem

I'd have it checked for suspension/steering damage as well whilst you are at it; you don't know what 'hidden' damage you might have caused!

Got the "Plane" back yesterday all working ok and checked out fine.

Cost me just over £200 including a new sump, 5 ltrs oil and filter, couple of bulbs and a fix to the plastic tray.

Local garage thought it was funny too.

Looking forward to getting a 3' x 2' picture for my office.

Captain Gaz

good price :)

Amazing picture:thumbup:however im glad you have your reg plate on show so i know never to buy that car should it appear for sale in the future!!!!!
