One bad Saturday

Recommended Posts

Decided to rotate wheels on my vRS today to equal out tyre wear... Had it up on the wheel-free ramp, bolts removed.... wheels stuck solid... got 2 off ok, but 2 not ok.... dropped from quite a height damaging the recently refurbished wheels... They are finished in Audi Silver.... Going back to The Wheel Specialist.

Am considering having all 4 painted in Anthracite and am looking for opinions to help me decide.... What do you think please?

Can copperslip be applied to hub/wheel to prevent them being stuck on again?

Thanks, Rob

Despite what has been said in some of the older threads, this is not a mainly VAG car problem! I first came across it back in 1979 and that was with a Ford Escort 1.6 Ghia - it came as a bit of a shock and that was with steel wheels! Ever since then I've made sure copaslip was "fitted" to every car I've owned as quickly as I could be bothered doing that job.

Just remember to "go easy" with the copper-ease etc or you will find that it will get thrown outwards inwards the edge of the rims and tyres once you have driven a bit quickly - I seem to have a couple of "brown lines" on one tyre after replacing the pads and discs.

Due to all the blo*dy roundabouts in Milton Keynes, I need to rotate tyres at about 4.5k intervals....

Tomorrow will get the copperslip for easy and quick rotates....

Thanks again.

Why are the roundabouts a problem ????? Are they different to others.

Now if you are booting it whilst going round then its not a roundabout problem.

No, they aren't any different to others-just lots of them on the grid-system we use...

Journey to work for example is 7 miles crossing I think 11 roundabouts en route...

not overly brisk through the roundabouts by the way!!!

anthracite will look awesome on your fabia rob, you've done silver now time for a change;)

thanks for that.... I nearly went for anthracite originally, but 'played safe' in the end. Have a second chance now, so will go with anthracite and add a little individuality :)

Of course, I remember now... was a great day.. Emma sounds like a lady on a mission... No point trying to stop her... wants a result... The spiders will look good too with a repaint.. May look out for a set of 16's myself...

I had a flat tyre a few weeks ago. My rear wheels had never been off (53 plate vrs). Had to call break down people due to the wheel being stuck. It took him 25 minutes with a sledge hammer and some wood. Not nice to watch! I now know what to expect when the over rear wheel needs taking off.

I imagine you felt every single hit.... Mine were last taken off in October, so does not take long for them to become stuck again.

When they come off for the re-re-furbishment I will ask for a small ammount of copaslip to be applied to the hubs etc.

Don't want the problem again :thumbdwn:

You need to get all the corrosion off first, both on the hub and inside the centre bore of the wheel then apply a small ammount of copper slip.

Thanks for that....

Will get the guys at The Wheel Specialist to do the hubs before refitting the refurbed wheels. Will remove them again at work to make sure all is at it should be.......

Do NOT get any on your bolts, you'll find they will work loose with copper slip on the threads.

Thank you for that.... Will keep the copaslip well away from the wheel securing bolts

Looking forward to getting original alloys finished in anthracite :)

my spiders are going anthracite,i just bought another one too,so will have 2 sets soon, what colour for my second set i wonder???????

the spiders will look great in anthracite.....

For some reason, white appeals..... despite the cleaning issues...... just like the look and would probably have a second set in that colour!!?

i buy a lot of wheels, very few ever make it to the car tho,i've just sold a set of tt comps and a set of tt 6 spokes, oddly the impulse buy wheels are standard vrs rims, don't know why but i've been craving a set for a while now:D

ok.... must have a lot of storage space!!

Would like a mint set of 16" spiders..... think they look good on the fabia vRS..

Cashflow would prevent me 'overstocking' on wheels!!!

Not so :thumbdwn:

I've copper-slipped my wheel bolts on 7 different cars, and my Dad's done the same on his own and customer's cars for 30 years without problems :D

If yours are working loose, I suggest not letting an 8-year-old girl do your wheel bolts up

I've copperslipped wheel bolts (but only the threads, not the seating surface) for years now, and never had one work loose.

Thank you Babs..... will apply a small amount of copper slip to bolts too.... anything that makes rotating wheels easier is a good thing..... always torque them to about 120nm...
