Thanks everyone for your input. Thought I should let you know that I went for a 'look round' Currys last night and ended up buying a 40" Samsung LED lol. It's being delivered on Sunday :)

 A 40" LED, that has to be the biggest light emitting diode ever :P

However, if you go down the blu-ray route, then it really makes sense to get a 1080p TV, particularly one that does 24 frames per second playback. Most, if not all of the new models do, but do check on the "lower spec" ones.

Was going to point out that if you want Blu-ray in the future look for a TV with 24 frames.

I don't know, because I haven't seen/counted them. I was just illustrating that it was more than one! And afaik yes it will be all over the screen as it is backlit, not side lit. Only the LEDs needed to light coloured pixels will be lit, hence how it can produce true black like a plasma, whereas old LCDs are lit by flourescent tubes across the back, which have to be lit all the time, causing blacks to look grey. The LEDs also mean the colours are better and it stops motion blur too :) Mine is 100hz and has a contrast ratio of 3 million to 1. They are supposed to be the best ones yet, although it's a very new technology and only Samsung and Sony currently make them. Yes, they are also very very thin!

they are side lit by LED's :)

Nice choice - was going to suggest Samsung as I like the look of their TV's and hope to treat myself to one once I land myself a permanent job! You can roadtest it for me before I get one then, and they should have come down in price by then too! ;):P:D

Looked it up - some are side, some are back. Either way, they produce pure black and get rid of motion blur and used loads less power :)

Aww, are you poor? ;)

i haven't looked it into in any detail but i saw this on a samsung demo they ran for the trade, maybe this was when they first came out i don't know but you've obviously looked into it more.

either way they are bloody impressive when watched in the shops :)

Yeah, there is deifnately both methods in use, dunno what mine is, but they definately look awesome. Supposed to be the best out at the moment, but we shall see eh? lol. It should arrive tomorrow, I'm excited :) Need to buy some blurays...

Just a shame the samsungs have horrific input lag = ****e for eggbox and ps3 :(

Er, no not poor, just made unemployed last year, so until I get a permanent job to replace my current contracting role, I won't be blowing my savings on a TV, as flashy gadgets won't pay the bills if the contracting dries up.

Anyway, smugness doesn't suit you!:rotz:

I never buy things when they first come out, prefer to see if they are as well rated after a few months use. Why pay full price, when a just a bit of patience will give you an even better deal!:D

Quite right too, future models of LED Tv's will be cheaper, and possibly they'll

sort out the problem of clouding and back/side light bleeding that plagues the

current models;)

I saw this TV today in currys, it does look good. There is one drawback to having a TV this thin though, and that is sound quality. Sound is bad enough on most flat screen TVs, but a TV this thin is unlikely to have sound of a reasonable quality for anything other than speech. I guess the main thing for it is power consumption. The 40" bought by Loz consumes just 100W of electircity

That is right, nearly all flat panel TV's don't do themselves justice in the sound dept,

these LED/LCD Tv's look good 'in store' with bright conditions, it's at home with subdued

lighting that the backlighting issues are more apparent.

To be fair though, if it's a hang on the wall TV you want, you could do worse,

just don't expect it to compete with Panasonics latest generation of plasma's in

the picture dept;) (Distant rumble of boots from LCD owners:D)

Does a normal LCD consume alot

also we are taking care of the crappy sound issue tomorrow :)

Well I wouldn't have been if you'd not tried to be smug first! :P

Yeah, all TV speakers are cr4p, so will be sorting that one out with a pointy thing!! (Colin will know what I'm on about lol) I mean, it's only for my room, so just see how it all goes really. I only intended to spend about £500, I just got a bit carried away....

Yes, they are much lower in the power consumption dept, which my dad is pleased about lol

A 40" samsung LCD TV consumes 200W of electricity, so costs twice as much to run as the LED purchased by Loz.

my 42" LCD uses 240W and my 42" plasma uses around 350-400W

Fair enough..

Altho it pales in comparison to needing to have the PC + eggbox on also to watch a xvid

in terms of money the LED TV costs 0.15p per hour to run and my plasma costs around 0.5p per hour, so if you watched tv for 5 hours a day on average every day thats £2.73 a year to run the LED TV and a massive £9.12 for my plasma, you can see where the savings are made!!

so on the 55" that i want(but won't get for ages) the cost savings are well worth while and easily offset the additional costs to buy it ;)

When you're paying the best part of £1000 for a TV then it's obvious that those cost savings are going to swing it to which TV I buy ;)

FWIW I think it's more down to RoHS and that LCD backlights are not cheap to make and are usually the part that fails in a screen.

Replace that with LED's and it seems like a cheaper way to do it.

Looks like a good price for a 40" LED telly.

Try not to watch too much BBC HD. I've never been into documentaries on "salmon rivers in Canada/Alaska" before. Never seen so furry a bear, nor so leafy a tree....
