Putting the wheels back on

Featured Replies

Is it just me, or do you lot struggle to first get the back wheels off on the Fabia..they have to be waggled off... with the jack swaying periously

I don't mean sticking like the front ones do..good kicking with the wheel nuts loosened normally sorts that one out!

Then putting back on time! Struggled like a stabbed pig trying to line the bolts up with the threads on the hubs..especially the front ones.

Just when you think you've got it lined up, and trying to hold it in place with your feet, arm and in my case my head as well, the bloody thing slips half a micro centimetre and as a consequence the bolts won't go in again.

Took me 15 stuggling minutes to put 1 front wheel back on!

Had to go and have a little lie down after I'd done it.

Tell you, I wouldn't like to get a puncture on the motorway on a cold dark wet n windy december night trying to do it!

Whatever happened to the good old fashioned studs on hubs that were so much easier to line the wheels up and onto?

Anyone got any tips on how to do what is in essence a simple job?

Audi and I think VW supply a plastic peg tool which you screw into one of the bolt holes. You then slide the wheel over the tool and insert a bolt in one of the other holes.

Other than that is just practice, have been doing them for the past five years (and Vauxhall before that whicha re the same) you get used to it.

Thanks for that Ross, I'll make some enquiries at my local VW garage tomorrow. Really can't be doing with this.

No disrespect to women...but how on earth would they cope? Near mission impossible for us blokes!

I suppose having the wheels up in the air helps, otherwise you have literally got to have your head on the ground to look down the bolt holes to line 'em up.

Just going to put the last one back on now...FRONT!

You'll probably hear the cursing from where you are.

Act helpless and wait for help. Usually works :)

What's all this got to do with puttin wheels back on my car?

All Janes fault! :P

Er, absolutely nothing. But much more entertaining, sorry :o

Your best bet is to put some copper grease on the flat inner face of the wheels (sorry, don't know the proper terminology), it'll stop it sticking next time.

Thanks Dave. It's not so much gettin' them off so to speak...got to watch what I'm sayin' on this thread now! ;)

No it's the getting back on of the front ones that's the real heartache.

Going to look into Ross's suggestion this week!

CJ, Peter Lloyd Rallying do a bolt to stud conversion for them, so much easier.

Wonder why Skoda and all the others do it as standard? Cost?

My Ford Angliia had them back in the 60's...now there's progress for you ey!

Perhaps its purely for the asthetics, as domed bolt heads look better than nuts anyday.

Yea Andy, I was only thinking this morning how good they look when I was struggling like a terminally injured wilderbeast to get the front ones back on! :D

Well then you need one of those VW locators. In fact, I might be wrong here...but I think my Superb came with one.

NB..just checked..yes it does
