Recommended 225/40 18" tyres for 07 vRS

Featured Replies

So my vRS is almost 2.5 years old. The garage told me in January that all 4 tyres are down to 3mm so wearing evenly, and I should make it until December before needing replacement tyres. Only done 17k miles. Nearly all town driving. The problem now is the front right has a small bump in the tyre wall caused by a pothole no less, and the rear right has a seal issue. I've had it rebeaded 3 times in last couple of months but about every 4-5 weeks it looses about 0.4bar of pressure. For some reason the tyre sensor doesn't come on till it's almost 0.6bar plus down.

Incidentally do these tyres sensors go faulty ? I wonder if mine is even working properly. The tyres would have been rotated at the 1 year and 2 year service. Is it possible the sensors got damaged ?

Anyway, I think I'll just get 4 new tyres soon and was wondering what's recommended.

My priority would be

1. durability

2. road holding

3. noise

What's recommended these days. Last time I looked (over a year ago), people were talking about good year eagle F1 asymmetrics.

thanks

For your list of priorities, based on personal experience and anecdotal evidence, I would go for Michelins, ideally Pilot Sport 2s. Best place I know of to buy them is Costco when they're doing their periodical buy 4, get 20% off deal. Like thebrymar, I've also just got my Vredesteins so can't comment on the longevity. The handling seems good though and they look ace! :) Maybe not quite as quiet as the Michelins though and I have read a couple of times that fuel economy isn't as good either.

The Sessanta's get my vote to - fitted them to the front a few months ago around £225 for 2 fitted...based on the recommendations from here. Seem a decent tyre...only time will tell.

The Michelin Costco deal is either on now (or soon) - I saw a flyer come in the other day. I used them before to get 4 tyres (for the price of 3) on my previous car (Avensis) - great deal £-wise.

Can't comment on the sensor issue.

Really? Cool. I might buy some for later fitment. Are you sure though as I saw a flyer (mainly orangey yellow in colour) the other day about discount on 4 tyres but it was only if you joined the excutive member scheme at extra cost (but you get an extra 2% off all purchases).

Could have been...didn't pay much attention to the tyres one...as I don't need any...just looked for the bogroll & juice deals !!!

Another vote for the Vredesteins:thumbup:.superb allrounder.

Just stay clear of Avon ZZ3's!...I bought my car with them on and they are rather poor IMO!:thumbdwn:

The Goodyear F1's arent bad on the Octavia, but my personal favourites are the Toyo t1-r.

I've got some Hankook ventus v12 evo tyres all round on my 18" rims on my mk1 & I'm very impressed with them especially in the wet.

still happy with my falken 452s to be honest

Flanno, have you ever set the TPM? It takes a few PSI to trigger. Maybe try really over inflating, press and hold the TPM button, then let the air out and try driving around. I always wondering that if after pressing the TPM does the wheel need to have revolved to gather the necessary info in order for this system to work. I know after my wheels were changed one day I drove approx 2 miles before the thing sounded.

Regarding tyres I have the Falken 452, very quiet, cheap but if you really pushed them they wouldn't give confidence in the damp. A friend with a 3 series and who knows a few M3 owners highly rate Kumho KU31's, I'm tempted to try these next. My opinion on F1's are they are very noisey, expecially if overinflated for a period.....my sounded like a damaged wheel bearing. Also the wear ain't great and they are not the cheapest in the world.

Hi there, Go for the Vredestein Ultracs. Excellent tyre in all conditions. Had mine on for 14k and still about 4mm left on front and 6mm on back. I don't hang about either when the mood and conditions allow! Also got Bluefin on so that should tell you something! :):)

I have to agree with Oggy's opinion. When i got my mk2 vRS it already had Hankook ventus v12 evos all round and I'm impressed too. Traction in both wet and dry is very good and road noise is very low, but then this is dependent on the quality of the roads in your area, as we're quite lucky here in Portsmouth as about 75% of the city's roads have been resurfaced.

Can't comment on durability yet as i have only had the car for 3 months

I had put these on my Fabia when i had it and found them to be pretty good and lasted along time. And this weekend just gone i put two on the front of my Octavia and four on my girlfriends Fiesta ST. Expensive trip to the garage!

Pirelli P Zeros..... or Neros if you can get them, quality tyre from a quality manuacture

Budget route i would go with the Falken 452

Not tried them on mine but Avon ZZ5 is getting good reviews and i have done several laps in a scooby with these on (Avon day) and they gripped fine without being over noisy

P.S forgot to say had 370+ going through the black beast with Yoko Parada spec 2`s on...... Brilliant tyre

The folk at Costco fitted my tyres from their last 20% deal on Friday. Managed to mark 2 of my wheels and horrendously under inflate all the tyres. Completely defeats the Nitrogen filling and I am just waiting for a quote to get the 2 wheels repaired.

Not impressed. :thumbdwn:

The deal this time is not as sweet either not that I shall be buying tyres there again.

Wega3k - Costco deal runs until 5th July - but given Hedge's experience...I guess it's down to luck on service?!?

I use a 'local' independant now & won't go anywhere else...he makes a profit, but I still get my tyres for a fraction of the price of KwakFat or the like...and none of the flannel, sales incentives, pressure etc.

Personally im not a fan of the pirellis had the P Zero's and P Zero Rosso's and they dont last too long at all, perfomance wise pretty good but not brilliant, think id be looking at the Vredesteins or Avons next time

Thanks for that. I'll get down there and order a set.

I've had a couple of sets from the Leeds and Sheffield branches before without any wheel marking or under-inflation. I know a few people with nice, large alloys that regularly get them done at those branches without any issues too.

My 0.02,

I changed front tyres from PZero Rosso to Eagle F1: a total different and much better world on every aspect you can take into account.

Glad my garage changed from Pirelli to Goodyear!

Please let us know how you get on with Costco.

The tyres on my VRS estate will require changing in the not too distant future, so all information very welcome!

I did make some enquiries at Sheffield Costco but they weren't very helpful, itially trying to tell me that Michelin do not produce a suitable tyre for VRS estates with 18 inch wheels.........

I take it that was the Reading branch of Costco then? They've seemed so uninterested when I've gone in there that I've bought tyres elsewhere (Micheldever) on principle.

Getting back on topic, I've just had 2 Falken 452s to replace my worn out ContiSportContact3s for £169 all in. Only done 250 miles in them so far but fantastic tyres when you consider the price.

Thanks all for advice. Lots of positive feedback then on the Hancock V12's it seems. Where I live in Ireland, choice is pretty limited, and it looks like I'll order online from these guys as my dealer says he'll fit them for me.

eiretyres.com - Details: Hankook Ventus V12 Evo 225/40 ZR18 92Y XL 4PR

GAFF - were the F1's you had asymmetrics or GSD3's as they are different thread patterns.

The asymmetrics get a good rightup from users here, much better than the GSD3's :

They also won the Autocar 2007 tyre test :

Flanno, I have been using eiretyres for a while now and while I thought it would be impossible to beat their deals, I clicked onto Camskill Tyres in the UK, you will not believe the savings to be made.............especially on Hancook. If you have access to a VAT number its even better. 2 x 225/45/17 XL 133euros landed including delivery (evo12)
