parking sensors and cruise control and I'm now

taking the mick... what if you ordered these on a new car?

  • Author

Admiral, I was expecting the normal welsh tones but was greated by an Indian voice who I had to explain 3 times what I was phoning about...

anyone else had to pay to have these options added? Only reason I bothered was that SWMBO kept moaning about them not being on the policy.

I'd write to the Contact address in your policy and query this if i were you.

tis a new car, but the policy reads....

"Midifications: including anything which changes the makers standard specification or alters its performance, including cosmetic changes such as alloys wheels, bodykits, or any non-standard parts, if in doubt please list."

Going to have to declare that Richbrook tax disk holder!

nice so you have to list all optional extras added by Skoda....

there was a debate about this some time ago, I guess its better to have everything down just in case they say your not covered.

They want another

licence to print cash...

Charging extra for parking sensors - which lessen the chance of self-inflicted parking damage - is OTT. And I cannot see any logic in charging extra for cruise control either. :(

you may say that but, they were one of the very few insurance companies that would inssure me (I'm 23) and they were

Thats very strange. I went with Admiral and did an online quote which I was very happy with. Then when I called them to finalise I told them about the extra's being, Xenons, Cruise, Sunroof, ESP, Side Airbags, De activation switch and the guy said he would have to go back to the department (forget the name he used) to get a new quote. When he called me back he said the quote was still the same as they considered these as safety

features. They were also the cheapest by a long shot.

I'd send the extra bill to SWMBO. :P

But seriously, just query it or swallow it, as you say they were also the cheapest for you. I had quotes ranging from not being able to quote me upto

Thats appalling!

I'd phone back again and speak to someone more senior (and with better command of the english language) to query this

Which is why i suggested writing.

And send it by recorded delivery. :)

probably get sent to india!

This is one that deserves to go to a few of the newspapers and motoring magazines if they stick by the charge.

I'd bet that the vast majority of drivers out there haven't declared factory fit options as modifications to their insurers.

Also if they are going to add that much for something that doesn't increase the risk or make any noticable change to the value of the car then they need naming and shaming.

Parking sensors must surely be a benefit to the insurers as they should reduce the chances of minor parking damage for some people.

The world's gone mad...again :)

just spoken to the insurance company as they sent a letter through saying that the cruise and parking sensors wouldn't be included in the standard parts clause. Basically in the event of an accident they wouldn't replace these parts, just use standard.

Anyone else heard this? That was a waste of

So they charge you extra and then don't cover the bits?

Madness

exactly, doesn't make any sense to me. I know alot of insurance companies have this 'standard parts' clause. But to be honest any thing factory fit I would class as standard, its not like i've had them fitted by an after market company.

admiral and elephant who are the same company have always had a standard parts clause, so you declare all your extras/mods your insurance will go up, but if your car gets nicked or written off they will only replace it with a standard model which i think is a joke, i am insured with them as they were the cheapest, but my car is totaly standard spec so i wasnt that bothered

My understanding of the insuance wording is that , in an accident the car would be repaired ( if repairable) back to the standard at which it was insured. SO if you fit aftermarket bits, and dont declare them, either the insurance company would invalidate the insurance, OR just NOT pay for their replacement.

My son fitted swapped his steels for alloys, and because the accident completely ruined one of them, the insurance company replaced it. ( having informed of the change ).

Steve

elephant and admiral are different though, they have a "standard parts" clause they will only replace parts with standard so if you change your alloy wheels for better ones and they are damaged admiral will only repalce them with standard vrs alloys

Chas

my son was insured with elephant at the time.

When did they change ? as his accident was last December.

Steve
