Black or silver...

Featured Replies

...which would you have a vRS in? My cousin has ditched plans for a Cooper and is keen to get a Fabia vRS but she is torn between black or silver. I know which one I'd go for (and in fact did) but perhaps some real-life ownership experiences could help her choose.

Anyone had Scotch Guarding done?

Cheers.

I think black outside and inside looks very dreary and oppressive, especially if you don't have a sunroof to add some light. The silver just looks common nowadays, and reminds me of grey cellulose primer - it doesn't look finished to me.

My old Fabia had metallic paint and it developed fine surface scratches in the lacquer very easily, so I went for a solid colour on my vRS. Had a few quite deep chips out of the paint from flying stones though, so buy some touchup paint with the car. The yellow is high visibility and chirpy but the back of the car gets dirty and shows it, so if you don't mind the aggressiveness of the red, that might be a better choice.

...that was ruled out yesterday.

It is purely down to black or silver.

Black or Silver??? Red.

I have teflon potection on my upholstery, It works if thats what you want to know.

If it has to be black or silver, I'd go for silver soley because there are less of them about and it hides dirt better.

If your cousin is happy to clean her car daily then black is the colour to go for because it looks really good when newly polished. Otherwise silver is a far more practical colour, except when it comes to trying to match colour following an accident. I've had both and would opt for silver.

Yep, it really is down to black or silver. I guess what we're looking for here is folk with either who have any tales of woe from their particular choice. I've had black and very dark green cars in the past and would never have another, even though they do look good, because they get filthy so quickly and make scratches and swirl marks stand out a mile.

Well, I've ordered a black one. It looks sooooo good in black - I guess it looks a bit stealthy. I know black is a bugger to keep clean, but when it is clean & shiny, it really does look stunning.

Nothing wrong with silver. Infact, my current SEAT Ibiza is silver, But the Fabia looks better in black.

I ordered a red one, but had to wait even longer so I opted for silver at no extra cost, and I have to say I think it looks great in silver, best colour for it IMO. Red looks quite sporty though, black looks good in a menacing kinda way. Yellow just looks ****e IMO.

The red vRS was ruled out yesterday. My cousin has just text me to say she is off to view a silver vRS this afternoon. Could a deal be looming??

Black or Silver??? Red.

Silver is one of the easiest colours for a laser speed camera to 'lock on' to. Black is the hardest.

I've ordered a black one :P

Don't they normally aim at the numberplate though?

Rob.

Depends. They sometimes try and pick you out of a queue, before they can see the plate.

Is that why Stealth Bombers are black?

Andy

I have a black one, alot of people on here have a black one, so go for a silver one! :D

But really black look the best when clean, which will last for 24 hours if your lucky! Silve will hind the dirt more but it doesn't look as good IMHO. Though saying that I was going to order a silver one but I would had to wait an extra 4 weeks

I went for Silver for a few reasons.

1) I've had black cars before and they really do need to be kept clean to look good. I didn't want to have to clean it every few days.

2) I don't really like chrome on cars, and felt that the chrome surround on the front grille was far less noticable on a silver car than any other colour. (I know I could have blacked out the chrome but I didn't really want to got to that trouble)

3) I think the Silver looks stylish and understated (like me !) .

I do agree though that a clean Black vRS probably looks better than a clean Silver vRS, but after a few hours on the road, it's probably the other way round.

BLACK....trust me when it is clean (and even when it isn't) it looks so nice. From the front the silver trim around the grill and the spots really stand out, and kind of gives it a real aggressive look, not to mention the alloys which again stand out.

Of course its down to personal opinion, but for me its black. Incidentally, it is the first black car I've ever owned, and before buying it had the usual "it'll be a ****** to keep clean".........EH???? where does that come from I wonder???? It may show dust/dirt up more than most colours BUT my last car was a red Golf ( same red as vRS actually) and any dust/dirt on that would just give it a wishy washy/dull appearance so basically you just cant win. Dirt is dirt and unless you clean your car it will show, so it just comes down to colour preference in the end, which is why I went for Black Magic.....and I love it :gapteeth:

If you buy black I would certainly get several layers of good quality polish put on the body work. I find that if I then use a pressure washer , set at the lowest pressure to remove the dirt , it only takes a wipe down with a leather , then a buff with a dry soft cloth and its a good as new. This only takes 30/40 mins. If its very dirty I use a mild car shampoo ( zymol ) , this loosens the dirt but does not remove the polish.

To me the alloys are just as difficult to keep clean - wheel wax seems to make it easier to get dirt , brake dust off etc.

and probably has the nicest smell i've ever smelt ... yum :)

My wife says the garage has never smelt so nice. Gone are the oil and grease smells.

...and it's going to be .................................black!

How was this decision finally reached? Well, my wifes vRS is silver and she told my cousin she had to choose a different colour!! So, black it is. Thanks everyone for your input.

They won't regret it, I love mine. I did buy a small Karcher presure washer though to make the regular clean easier and am waiting on my wax kit to arrive after a visit from the Wax Wizard who did a wonderful job. Was a little worried about the black before it arrived but not given it a 2nd thought since.

A black Fabia vRS was ordered yesterday and will be collected on 30 October `04. Cousin Lou is really looking forward to collecting it. I've told her to call in here and say hello.

Black certainely looks best, but it is a nightmare to keep looking clean.

Silver is a bit boring, but after owning black for six months I would probably go for silver next time.
