As I will be taking delivery of my Fabia vRS in about 4 weeks time, I'm thinking of how I can pretect it against the winter elements (& the bloody salt on the roads!).

Is it a good idea to wax a brand new car straight away? I believe the dealers just polish it up without waxing it - true or not?

I'm using Zymol cleaner wax (the stuff you can get at Halfords) on the SEAT at the moment, & it seems to do a good job but only lasts about 3-4 weeks. Can anyone recommend a longer lasting wax?

I have washed and treated mine with Turtle Wax products which I hope are good. They had some great reviews. It is standing outside at the moment in the rain and it is beading and running off. I wonder how often I will need to retreat it? I would also be interested in what others have done. I am keen to keep it looking like new over the winter.

picked my octy up yesterday and the rain is beading off it. does the paint need to cure these days? or is it hardened using those UV light things?

Boyced, paint will be hard enough virtually as soon as the cars finished, paints are all water based these days so oce they have been cured at the factory they are just about there, your car is at least a month or so old so it will be fine

I have been using turtle wax as they came 2 for 1 at Halfords. Turtle Wax does a fairly good job for the money, value for money in my car cleaning is top priority. I say Turtle Wax products tend to last for about 6 weeks dependingon your milage. A car regularly waxed, detarred, and cleaned in my opinion builds up an 'immunity' and as such it doesn't need cleaned so much to stay looking good if you understand what I am talking about!

From what I have read recently on other marque forums, it may be that Swissol may have to be sourced form Swissol direct, and it would be unfair of me to go further. However, I know Mark would have some good stuff regardless.

From my experience of car care, being an enthusiastic carcare sort of person, the best polish i use is Autoglym Supreme. (Only available from trade sources at the moment). It is a specific polish designed for dark colours, it's very low dust and leaves little if no smearing. Boyced car was finished in this polish and it looked A1. Also in my opinion i would steer clear of these so called paint sealants etc, as most are water based, which is not ideal, bearing in mind the lovely weather we get in uk.

Diamondbrite Jewelultra for me.......you can get it very cheap from e-bay (if you are lucky) which includes stage 1, stage 2 wax treatment, and teflon seat treatment. Did mine 4 weeks ago, rained today and it beaded off the bodywork like it was scared to be there...... :wow:

Err..isn't Colour Magic a polish, and therefore mildly abrasive at best?

Possibly not what you should be using on a regular basis methinks

Is it a polish or a wax, surely a new/newish car doesnt need the cutting properties of a polish? Plus, using a decent wax will reduce the white marking of black plastic trims.

Swissol doesnt dust or smear,doesnt white stain very much at all and also does a cracking job on my dark blue metallic paint...and its also a wax not polish.

As I understand it he uses something to seal the paint then wax's it. After giving it a good clean 1st of course. You will have to call him for more information as my memory is short but what made me decide on a personal visit was the cost of the kit vs the personal visit/instruction is not that much. About

Theres a lot more too it, Mark understands all about various wax compounds & the chemistry required to clean various stains off just about anything. Part of his background is in Chemistry & he produces a lot of the products himself under the Wax Wizzard name. He worked for several years for Swissol & helped develop some of their products. His tend to be as good or better but dont always have all the sweet smelling oils added so cost less !

As Jifster has said its well worth getting him to prep the car for you, it might seem a lot but you will get a stunning basis for looking after a car , new or old & you will pick up an awful lot of knowledge on looking after cars. If you can find another car for him to do at the same time it will reduce the cost per car as his travelling time will be shared

You get a kit yes, not sure what is in it exactly as i'm waiting for mine now. I know you get all you need and a step by step guide too. I also ordered one of the silicone wipe things from him, it's like a blade for getting the water off after the wash. Anyway i'm not very good at explaining things as i've just come off night shift and only working on 1 brain cell (some would say no change there then). It may sound expensive until he explains how long it will last you and compared to other products that are cheaper but would last a fraction of the time. Also as Stuart says, Mark has a background in chemistry and enginering and has a wealth of knowledge on the subject. Is it a new car your getting? If so you won't have any regrets, even if it's not new, same applies. Not much money if you consider your outlay and the need to take care of your investment. Most of all what he does works and his products are excellent.

Thought this may be of interest to some of the less experienced(me included) "car detailers" as the americans call em. Basically it gives you advice on all the steps to an award winning shine......although they do promote there products quite a lot, anyway....

Had a dose of SUPAGARD put on my octavia l&k, if you are buying from a dealer brand new they should be able to do this, ask them to put it on as a freebie, i did.
