am i gullable??

Featured Replies

father in law developed MS a while ago and lost sight in his right eye, had to retire down to medical reasons obviously, so i picked him and the missus up other day and he proceeded to tell me how he has to retake his driving test etc, this is where i think they are trying to pull one on me,

he tells me he qualifies for the highest rate of motability and his choice of car is ........... a RANGE ROVER SPORT!!!! i burst out laughing saying there is no way the government will pay for you a £70k motor, he says its true but he will have to do without his weekly benefits, so i asked the question i knew i had to "are you going to insure me on it" and he says yes. my missus knows what im like about cars and think this may be a joke of hers but i can always see through these jokes or by now they will have told me. can such a car be acquired on motability or am i a berk for asking the question

I would suggest they are pulling your leg. Firstly, a person with one eye should NOT drive - you need both eyes for depth (distance) perception, and secondly there is NO WAY the government would fork out that kind of money for ANYONE other than an expenses swindling MP...:D

i said that bout his eye but he said as long as he passes his test its ok, the swines, maybe now they are trying a new attack plan on wind ups!!

My dad has only partial sight in one eye and, providing he passes his eye test successfully, he is allowed to drive lawfully in the UK.

30 years of driving with one eye and with no accidents would suggest his depth/distance perception is just fine :D

He's not the only one ;) Bizarrely, I've not ever found depth perception to be an issue - the biggest problem is compensating for a lack of peripheral vision and that's not really an issue....

Chris

I too only have sight in one eye, not been a problem to date. Never had an accident since I past my test in 1985.

This is a bit freaky, but me too- is this very common or do we have an unrepresentative sample here on Briskoda? I've never had any problem with depth/distance/speed perception- in fact I'd say compared to a lot of people I'm pretty good at that. As ScoobyChris says the biggest issue is the peripheral vision, but you just have adjust, and I've had nearly 40 years (and over 20 driving) to do that. I hated driving a LHD car though- the pillar was very obstructive.

I'm a boz eyed git so only use one eye to look forward, it is handy in that the other eye is always focussed on the wing mirror, or it was before the advent of speed cameras :(

As for a Range Rover on motability, I have seen XJ's on it so no reason why not, I believe it is down to individual garages or he will have an allowance that he can make up, a freind got iirc £3,5k a year motability and bought a scooter then pocketed the rest :)

So three regular posters on Briskoda have sight in only one eye.. wow :) Dad's is due to a detached retina...

he never lets us pay for anything lets put it that way! although i wouldnt have thought hes got 12k spare to put down on a motor like that

As others, there's no legal reason why someone with one eye can't drive.

As for the RRS, there's 2 similarly named but different things going on here:-

1) Mobility Allowance, which is paid to the "disabled" by the Government.

2) Motability, which is a charity that gets some people on MA cars at fleet prices.

Nice Technician that is in the workshop here at my research uni has one glass eye. He drives an 05 Nissan Maxima and there is more scratches on gordon browns Jag than there is on this.

He doesn't hang around in it either, he fairly gives that v6 lump welly !!

Jesus H Christ! How can you perceive depth (and therefore distance) with only one eye?

Try it. Put a variety of full glasses of water on a table in different positions, then completely close one eye and quickly try to pick up a specific glass. Betcha can't do it!!

Maybe you can "learn" depth perception using relative sizes...I'll have to research as I'm no expert on it!

I know of someone who only has sight in one eye too. He's been driving for years.

Well I have been single eye sighted from birth, so guess I have accustomed to only having sight in one eye and adapted accordingly. I am able to do anything a normal dual sighted person can including playing ball based sports.

Look what else you can get on Motability, it doesn't tell you wha the deposit is though. I suppose if Father in law pays £12K, that equates to £4k per year during the lease.

Having never been any different, I have no idea, but trust me it works.

OK......*closes left eye*

can't see a fecking thing. Of course i can't pick it up....

*opens left eye and closes right*

no different to normal

Perhaps that is it. Like I say, I have no idea really, as I don't know any different. I'm crap at catching, but then again so is SWMBO and she has perfect binocular vision.

I'm hopeless at ball based sports, but I think that's just I'm a clumsy sh!t.

I became partially sighted in my right eye about 9 years ago thanks to a detached retina and corrective surgery. Things I noticed afterwards were that I had trouble catching and playing pool/snooker, although I'm not sure how that's evolved over time as I kind of lost interest

A little Googling turned up this site Driving with one eye (LostEye.com) which seems to suggest that depth perception is only relevant below 20ft, although I've not noticed any real differences :D

What makes you think that "dual sighted" people can all play ball games (at least well)?

Wait & see ( no pun intended ), if the brick on wheels turns up outside the house & youre on the insurance, then you can have a drive.

All women are crap at catching. And throwing. (Hence the expression "You throw like a girl...")

steps back to avoid fallout from female Briskodians...

I don't think there'll be any fallout - they all know its true

My late father held a HGV class 1 for many years & he had only sight in one eye from birth.

Although at one of his regular HGV medicals once, a new doctor tried to take his licence off him because of it. Fortunately he contacted his trade union & they successfully fought his case. He never had any fines or points, the only accidents he had were other people running into his artic whilst it was stood in traffic.

In fact he had to go to a coroners court once, (long before I was born), as some one tried to drive under his trailer (before they had side under run bars) in a then new Mini, killing both of it's occupants. Fortunately the car behind my Dad was a Police car & both officers witnessed the whole incident.
