Whats this laptop worth?

Featured Replies

Possibly looking to sell my old laptop, but it really depends on how much i can get for it whether it's worth selling or not.

It's a Sony Vaio PGC-GR135MP (885M)

Genuine copy of XP sp2 (with backup disc's)

512 RAM (upgraded from the std 256 about 6 years ago)

30 GB HDD

1.20GHz Mobile Pentium III CPU

15" TFT screen (no scratches or dead pixels)

Combined DVD/CD/CDR/CDRW

3x USB ports

2x PCi(?) slots (with a wireless network card)

Battery, charger, original box etc.

VGC with very few marks on it (considering it's 7 years old) - it was the top of the 15" range when i bought it @ £1,800!

I have no idea on it's value but i know the minimum i will let it go for, anything less then i might as well keep it.

So what do you think it's worth?

I know the market has dropped dramatically in recent years due to the huge increase in budget notebooks. I wouldnt expect to get to much for it TBH, it may not be worth selling and instead keeping to use if something happens to another computer.

I'm sat in front of a slightly newer Dell with built-in Wi-Fi, that I bought second-hand RETAIL for a lot less than 200 notes about a year ago - if that's any help... :ne_nau:

Thanks, pretty much what i thought, i just didn't want it sitting here rarely getting used it i could of got £250 for it.

Looks like it will be resigned for SWMBO to use in the lounge whilst she is watching TV.

Divide that by three and you are in the right region.

I've sold P4 laptops for not much over £100

Would have said about £70-80...

Anything is only really worth what people are willing to pay for it. Have a look on eBay to see if anything similar has sold and that will give you an idea as well as what the guys ( and girls ) are sayimg on here.

Its a killer when you've paid that much for something ( even though it was 7 years ago ) and its not worth much. Technology eh?

There are plenty other stuff you could do with it if you didnt want to sell it. Why not have a bash with a Linux Distro and breath some new life into it.

Stick it in the garage as a dedicated VagCom/Briskoda/Music player. :)

I wouldn't sell it for more than £90.

(Sorry - not the news you were looking for!)

ER less?

£50 tops, the best way to get money for that would be to break it for parts and sell the parts. That of course assumes there are people still wanting spares for them, which isn't that likely if it's 7 years old.

How are you guys pricing this laptop or are you just going against current specs and prices?

If it had a serial port I'd take it for around the £50-£60 mark. :) Might make a good vagcom "upgrade" machine but it needs a serial port to work with my cable.

Cheers guy's looks like I'm keeping it then

My son has a knack of getting through PC's in a short space of time, so when his current one goes nipples skywards i wont think it's 'too good for him'

Sorry - My post wasn't clear.

The price I gave was for breaking! If it's below a certain spec with damage ect I normally break them.

I'd keep it as a holiday laptop for the dvd drive and for looking at photo's on when away. It really is a joke how little these decent machines are worth these days. I bet the software is worth more than the hardware, were there to be a market for that...

Either that or give it to a local charity if you are feeling generous and want it to go to a good home that will be appreciated

Bog all TBH. Like others have said prices for new kit has come down so much now that not many people will bother to buy second hand.

It'll be a handy spare or you could try Fleabay, you might get more than you think.

If someone can tell me where to get a laptop of that spec. for £50 I'll be very pleased.

a brand new £300 MSi wind has far greater spec than that in every except screen size(10") so sadly as others have said its not really worth a lot, agreeing with others valuations i'm affraid.

I wouldnt have said it has a far greater spec. Sure its got more memory and a bigger hard drive and has a newer CPU but the Sony has a bigger screen ( as you mentioned ) and has an optical drive. Of course i could be talking absolute rubbish.

You occasionally find them on e-bay, but usually nowhere.

The issue is people won't pay more than that sort of figure for it because one of a much better spec and new can be had from £200 upwards. Because prices are low people don't bother selling them and so you end up with the almost no demand and almost no supply situation.

Most end up in bins or recycling systems.

OK so tell me where that spec. can be bought new for £200. The example Ben gave was a 10" screen, no CD/DVD, etc. and it's £300.

I had this dilemna recently when my old, old laptop died. Replacing it even from eBay was going to cost at least £150, with something probably 5 years old and not much different in spec (PIII 650, 512MB, 20GB HDD, CD etc...). Hence I'm still very interested in knowing where people think these £200 laptops are available, let alone £50 ones!

Thanks Alex. I had a look too, and prices do seem to have dropped - maybe it will get replaced now :)
