Seeing as i know toally 0 about cars i thought id ask on here.

Im thinking of lowering my VRS Just for looks.

Is it as simple as just getting lowering springs? And are they an easy D.I.Y? Which are the best/cheapest (not that these two go together) Anyone flogging any cheap?

Are springs somthing i need to tell my insurance about? Thanks.

Lowering properly costs a fair bit of money. Lowering on the cheap, usually ends up with VRS on it's roof in a field. It's a major modification, so yes you must tell your insurance.

Done properly, it will cost about £600+insurance increase. Unless you understand suspension geometry, it's not an easy DIY job. So add a couple of hours labour + alignment costs to the equation.

indeed you can, but these will cause the oem dampers to fail due to the internal seals now running on the damper in the wrong place.

The vrs is already lower than standard, so make sure if you do this that you get -30 springs for a vRS, otherwise you may end up with a car that sits higher than it does now.

You can pick up coilovers cheap enough now matey!

The only way to go with lowering IMO . . . Unless you can afford air ride ofcourse! :rofl:

Instead of butchering the poor guy give him some friendly advise!

We all started somewhere, after all this is meant to be a forum.

As Dayve says the best way forward is coilovers, as this wont incur any possible damage to your stock shocks and dampers.

The shockers are the parts that wear on suspension

So if you put 30mm lowering springs , it will finnish the shockers off quicker

There are a couple of springs and shocker combinations that will do the job for you , but as has been said the coilovers are not a bad price

We do AP coilovers and are quite a good price , with cracking quality and that means you can adjust the height of them to exactly what you want

I must admit , the dampening of the AP`s are not back breaking either

The technical speak isn't exactly up to par either. Sorry to nit pick folks, but a shock absorber is a spring component, the dampers are, er, dampers :rofl:

If I wanted to lower my car, I would take the route Lummox used in his excellent AP thread. AP coilovers with helper springs.

If you do lower it, be aware of ground clearance for the dreaded speed humps, and possible uneven tyre wear. I have seen cars lowered by someone simply chopping 50mm off the spring with an angle grinder. Handling characteristics of a jelly :rofl:

Here's a thought, why not use the money to buy diesel, and go for nice relaxing drives :thumbup:

Just whack some Eibachs on it -25mm :)

Thanks for all of you help. Oh and to the abusive guy. I wont be getting a remap for a while for insurance and if i was really that skint would i own a VRS at all?

Im after lowering mine purely for asthetics. I don't have coilover money and was going to go for some springs. So what and where can I get better shockers and dampers??

Koni FSD's and Eibach springs... will lower 25mm

for aesthetics it doesn't lower a great deal and for the price i'd be tempted to save up for some coilovers :)

Mine is being lowered tomorrow on some Spax progressive springs - 30mm, will let you know how it feels afterwards.

Sticking with standard dampers for now, but when they die they will be replaced with somthing a little more suited to the job.

Try some springs first and if it feels crap or looks rubbish, or you fancy sticking it back to standard then you haven't blown the bank. It's your choice.

I had just springs on my Corsa and the ride was terrible.

I have AP Coilovers on my Fabia and although I am having some rather annoying noise issues the ride quality, considering its lowered about 50-60mm over standard, is pretty damn good

Just got it back from the garage and initial feel is excellent, no bounce and the comfort is just as good if not better than standard. Handles much better too. About 25mm lower at the mo, but apparently they will settle a little.

Garage guys said my dampers were in perfect nick so i will see how long they last with the new springs. :thumbup:

we all start someware mate..... remember this is a nice place :P

I personaly would say the Eibachs would be fine. I have run them on several cars with no problems and most places will fit them for £150-£200. But running them will cause other parts to fail, such as bush's and dampers, more quickly then if it was left.

When I had mine done I had the following

Weitec GT coil overs

Console bushes

all Subframe bushes and wishbone bushes done

JABBA RARB

and 4 wheel setup.

Was just under 1K from Jabba and took 5 hours I think..... this is what i would advise.

I got weitec coilies in my car,and i really cant recommend them enough!The ride is as good if not slightly better than standard,and we have some woeful roads to deal with over here.

I have TT comps on with 195/40/17s (slight stretch),and i have the front coils wound all the way down and the rear adjusters out.Sits with a lovely nose-down stance with no rubbing at all,and looks pretty good.ill try and get a pic up later!

i got a set of apex shocks/springs from pd tuning about 1month ago , have had no problems with them at all , i did have new bushes and anti rollbar links as they was off but that was my chose lol,

the set i got lower the vrs by 40 mm,but dave at pd tunning is a rep with apex and he can do a in house mod that he done for my set for free witch is he cuts a little off the rear spring and then covers the end up so it sits 40 front and 43 rear so its sits true ,but my god 4 the 350 that i paid for the kit and 100 fitting ,that looks the bobby when all done and fitted ,not to low but sits soo nice ,and the ride is really good , not hoppy on back roads and smooth on main roads , really recomend them and pd tuning ,so helpfull:)

Ill be honest guys, I know what your saying about doing it properly, with coilovers and what not, from my experience there not particularly hard to fit yourself so long as you have the tools and patience. I have fitted springs to mine 40 or 50mm spax ones, the ride is bounce but I have never been close to losing control or to being on my roof in a field ( and i like to give it some every now and then). So if its just for looks id get some springs, just dont expect it to handle anything like coilovers.
