Sudden increased fuel consumption

Featured Replies

Driving style and general daily work destinations unaltered, engine running just fine, big 60k service carried out 6k ago including all filters, brakes not binding, tyre pressures bob on, no diesel leaks or smells, but all of a sudden my consumption is approx 20% higher than it was 2 weeks ago!

I'm struggling to get 46 mpg driving like a granny now.

Anything else I've not checked before I take it in to be 'plugged in' and checked over, probably at great cost?

Tricky one. Could be the MAF, as often they don't throw up a CEL or even log a code. Sometimes they over fuel when MAF is on last legs.

You can buy a cheap code reader from Gendan for £39, saves paying a dealer £60 for a code scan.

Hello Mr Ree,

Get your pride and joy along to garage for a code readout to try pin-point any problem's, and take the guess work out of the equation first.

All I ever get from my 2005 Fabia VRS is 45mpg, driven at variable speed's.

Good-luck. Ian. 12/08/2009. :D:thumbup:

Ahh yes, the dreaded MAF. Good call my man.

How much are the stealers fleecing us for one of them then?

Come to think of it Moggy, it may well be smoking slightly more than usual.

Bring back plugs points and condensors I say. :D

Younger members will not have the foggiest what I'm going on about here.;)

I think you're looking at around £60 for a new MAF sensor if you exchange it for the old one. It comes complete with the housing so you don't need the fancy star bolts to get the sensor itself out, just the torx screws to undo it's housing and replace the whole thing.

I did it on my car with a similar situation and it instantly fixed the problem :) - not saying it will definitely fix yours but it did wonders for my car!

Could it be a poor tank of fuel or is this over more than one tank?

Normally about 50-54 here, but there again I'm a bit of an old fart that doesn't take the bait at traffic lights etc. Absolutely no point as my licence will vouch for. ;)

Slightly different technique and style once I'm out in the wilds of Wales however. :P

Always (when local) use Shell, and this is the third tankfull that's been producing poor figures, so no, i don't think it's dodgy fuel tbh.

I had this back in May just after having had new tyres fitted. The return trip to 'The Ring' the following day to watch the 24 hour race produced a miserable 45 overall, which was down 5 on last year.

When I got home I checked the tyre pressures, and they were all showing 26psi.

Flamin' tyre depot, and useless me for trusting them.

Put them back to 2.2/3 bar and consumption went back to normal.

is this just over the past few days? if so it could be how warm it is and the engine isnt getting cool enough air in.

Do derv's have a coolant sensor like the petrols ????

If they do then that could be your problem.

  • 4 months later...

My 1.9 TDI has been doing exactly the same thing during the last three tank fulls.

Funny enough all the fuel has come from my local Shell garage.

My car has only 26,500 Miles on the clock and is three Year old, fully serviced and has always been unbelievably very economical.

As an average 135 miles to every quarter of a tank doing normal driving which is little town work, but mostly 40-50 Mph country lanes.

Suddenly over the last 3 tankfuls it averages 115 Miles per quarter tank!!!

Cannot find any leaks or smells of diesel, the driving has been roughly the same (maybe slightly slower due to icey roads)

Maybe the cold Weather makes the diesel thicker and it uses more, or possibly im using more electrics, heated window, dipped headlights, blowers etc.

Only warmer Summer weather will tell.

I've noticed a significant drop in fuel economy recently too. I'm putting it down to the colder weather we've been having and having to sit about waiting for the screen to de-mist! Was getting 50+ easily a month or so ago, and now I'm struggling to reach 50 on most trips.

I did hear something mentioned about how the cold weather effects diesel, but couldn't be 100% sure on that! I guess I've just gotta sit it out n wait for the cold weather to end!

it does do something makes it denser i think and harder 2 combust

Least I'm not the only one with awful consumption. I got 34 miles to £10 of diesel on Thursday/Friday

Granted it was mixed heavy foot and light foot but i always get about 100 miles to £10 with the same kinda driving. I've not long had my maf replaced and I know it's still working as it should as my cars still like the little rocket it was before and after the remap

I blame the weather tbh as my mondeo ST tdci had awful consumption during the snowy period we had last year

I too havent been getting all that great mpg. Normally get 53-60 on a particular journey I do every weekend but over the last two weekends its been 48-50mpg.

What a load of.... BOLLOCS! lmao big con i recon the letter at the end made me giggle :giggle::giggle:

the "device" looks like something a king would wear on his head :giggle:

i used to get 430 to 460 miles per tank(until red light come on) but yesterday it come on and only 315miles done. so i am worried about the thing has to be a leak as the trip computer is still returnin 46.3mpg, so where do i look for leaks

Try not to worry too much, i guess if you had any type of leak you would smell it a mile off!

It looks like Diesel Skodas don't go much on Cold icy weathers.

My car has now got Half a tank left, i would normally have done a minimum of 270 Miles to this point, from a full tankful.

But it has only done 205 Miles !!!!

That quite simply means the car is going to do 130 Miles less to the tankful.

What with the very bad condensation on the windscreen & side windows needing mopping up and taking 10 Mins to clear.

Im getting very peed off with my Fabia, even my 13 Year old Fiesta has no faults whatsoever no matter what the Weathers like.

And thats treated like a runaround go cart, with no love or attention.

My Fabia is treated like a Baby!

Well I too have been a bit gutted at the fuel consumption recently too in this cold weather. However this evening had to drive 100 miles home, did a steady 70 all the way and she returned a very healthy 55mpg(computer). Actual calculated was 52mpg. So basically get the car on a nice run, and it will reward you! Even if it is cold!

My car does a motorway run several times a week for about an hour and at 70 cruise controlled it's still only returning 46 - 51mpg average whereas on the same run at the same it'd return 64mpg average

I blame the weather tbh as my Mondeo ST TDCi done the same thing in the winter, but the winter weather brought on the common injector failure so i got rid of the car

Took my fabia on a nice long motorway journey the other night and managed about 57mpg on the way there and 63mpg on the way back though. I was severely bored on the way back, and driving much more economically than I was when I managed to get a return of 65mpg in the summer, so I'm blaming the weather being as it sounds like a lot of other people are having similar problems!

The condensation and waiting for ice to melt on the inside of my windscreen is really beginning to bug me too. I never had any problems with my fiesta zetec s... still getting much better mpg though, so not going to moan too much about the other issues!!

As others have said, I wouldn't worry too much about lower mpg, sure it'll go back up in the spring when we start having nicer weather!!

sadly seems a comon problem best thing is a good glass cleaner and polish gets rid of most condensation strait away plus clears quicker!

My petrol 14 16v fabia is doing quite well on a frugal 47mpg average on motorways :)

much better than the old fieasta 1.3 that dis 22mpg!!!! :p :giggle:
