High Mileage Used Diesel - Good or Bad?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys & Gals,

Considering a high mileage mk2 octavia. So far a 1.9 TDI hatch or estate, elegance/L&K.

What are everyones comments on pro's and con's.

So far, advertised locally i've seen 3 or 4 with anything from 90,000 - 125,000 all around the 55 plate year.

Obviously service history is a must but was just looking for peoples opinions on how much life is left in them and what sort of parts start to go wrong with this kind of mileage (susspension, brakes etc).

Trying to work out what my budget will get - Either a low mileage fabia/octavia mk1 or a high mileage octavia mk2 or even a small engined roomster (but not having much luck with finding one of those).

Please add anything you wish. Thanks in advance.

What sort of price are we talking about? As long as the car has a service history and had oil changes done then there is no reason to get 200,000 miles. you will need to check suspension and brakes.

HTH Simon.

If you can find a late MK1 130tdi you should have very little go wrong or expect to find anything wrong if its been dealer serviced, mind you they are scarcer than hens teeth, but good for anything near 500,000 miles, just ask any taxi driver in your area, and try to get one from a dealer for piece of mind

The MK2 140 tdi could have turbo problems that will cost the arm and the leg

You can still buy a brand new MK1 from www.thetaxicentre.co.uk for around 10K and they have the scrappage deal on at the moment

i have heard that too.... 100k before a diesel is run in.... not sure about that myself.

However, if correctly serviced, especially oil a filters it maybe the case.

i was in a superb 1.9tdi taxi a while back and IIRC 300k approx and still going strong

Not all company cars/rep mobiles are thrashed. Mine is gets well and truly pampered and when it goes to auction next month someone is in for a great buy. Its just had its 60K service yesterday and its running as sweet as. Its a Mar07 07 plate with 58K on it.

On another note, I have the chance to buy it from HSBC so I rang today just out of interest and they said they want £10100 for it. Is this a good price?

As with any car, as long as the servicing and condition are ok, mileage shouldn't really matter :)

I have just brought a 49k 55 plate elegance estate and it was ex lease; it is still like new! A well looked after car with a lot of miles is better imo than a really low mileage example of a similar vintage; short trips don't do the engine any good

As everyone has said check its history but i would prefer a high mileage model then all its work/poss faults would have been sorted and you get the luxury of a good car thats just run in ;)

But at the end of the day its your decision and what your happy with.Good luck

I'm no stranger to buying cars and although i'm not a mechanic you know if theres something seriously wrong by checking the obvious and taking a test drive.

I've bought ex company/lease cars before and been burnt so i'm very hesitant about a high mileage but if I want a mk2 on my limted budget I haven no option to go high mileage. Problem is if I buy private theres no warrenty and if I buy from a used car place its only 1 month and in my experience if you try to claim for something you have virtually no chance of claiming on the traders policy. Theres always some get out they can use. Also some times the mileage and service history from a select few dealers are false and you dont know that until something happens and the history starts to show itself. (clocks changed to get around the MOT mileage, old service books removed and replaced with full service history from garages that have closed down etc etc).

Timing is just so wrong for me. Wind the clock back a few weeks and I would have kept my mk1 vrs. Still i'm only covering my options atm I might get to keep the Fabia yet.

Modern engines are good for many more miles than 100K. I have owned 3 cars now, which have had in excess of 130K miles on and they all drove like new. A full complete service history is what to look for, as long as it has that it should be fine. Many Taxi drivers use octavia diesels worldwide, and most have far in excess of 250K miles on them and are still running fine bar consumable items. My car is on 82K miles now, and drives better now than it did when I bought it 3 years ago as an ex Alamo rental car.

Thanks mannyo.

Thats what i'm slightly worried about. At around/over twice the average miles per year (average taken at 12,000) it's more then likely been a rep mobile or taxi/hire car. While serviced the general wear and treatment of the car will have suffered more then average imo. At the end of the day you dont know till you go and view/test drive. Whatever I go and see I'm glad I have vagcom to take with me.

Just seen another ad this morning but this is for a 2004 54 plate Elegance (new shape) 1.9tdi, 105 BHP. I though the new shape were 2.0tdi 140 bhp.

You can have the 1.9TDI and 2.0TDI in 105BHP and 140BHP respectively.

What would your budget be?

Thanks

Budget ATM is 5k up to 6k. But I want elegance or L&K spec. Right at this time i'm skint :thumbdwn:

So what's the difference between a 1.9tdi 105bhp and 140bhp. Is the 140 the sport only?

Thanks, just trying to get up to speed on the mk2 diesels

1.9 = 8v

2.0 = 16v

Theres about 35bhp between the two ;) I'd suggest the PD105 isn't quite as refined, but more durable.

Both engines are available on L&K and Elegance models :)

Sport is just an Ambiente with a few added bits.

Aha, now I see. thanks

So the PD105 is the same engine from the mk1???

Yes :)

It was a PD100 in the MK1 as i had one and the PD105 was for the MK2 ;)

The 2.0 also has a six speed geartbox, the 1.9 only has five speeds leading to higher RPM on the motorway cruising.

Hi Mark

I'm pretty much repeating a reply I've just put in another thread...

I ran a 2nd hand mkI 1.9 (90bhp) & ran it for 4 years & 110k without issues.

So far I've added 42k in 17months on my mkII 2.0 140 Sport,

it clicked over 99k today its 2005/55 plate.

From ownership the turbo made the police siren noise,

Skoda Warranty say "it's not a fault it's a characteristic"

My dealer has extended my warranty for peace of mind

till next May with unlimited mileage.

I travel in Octy taxis (mkI & II) very very regularly,

the drivers say they're much better built than Passats

& they don't have the Mondeo's common rail injector issues.

Mark - Shame you weren't looking back in April. I let my PD105 June 05 Elegance hatch, with 70k on the clock go for 5 grand in p/x. Had very nice speakers, nav and kenwood double din head unit too. I just couldn't be bothered holding out for another grand max in a private sale, or stripping the stereo and ebaying it. I wanted it gone and out of the way so I could get on with enjoying my new one. God it was a good car though that...

If you can wait around 3 months for its replacement to arrive, my 06 L&K 2.0D DSG Hatch will be up for sale. It'll have 145,000 miles on the clock. I've had it from new. It's only just over 3 years old and in fantastic well looked after condition. It's easily in your price range. I'll let it go for less than 5K.
