Life after the vRS?

Featured Replies

Just having a look about, I really struggle to find anything as good so even though I am nearing the end of my warranty period, still very very much in love (or if not extremely happy!) with the car (in most respects and if not, compromised by my own choices eg tyres).

Pound for pound nothing currently competes on performance for a small hatch disel, as well as previous purchase price.

The Tdi sport from the new fabia range, does seem like its stifled and I don't think I'd be much in love with that performance.

Vauxhalls 1.7 CDTi SRi is not too far out on performance but thats quite a bit higher than the original price of the Skoda (and the new Fabia).

Even if the newer vRS comes out soon, its still not as attractive either (because forgetting the 0-60, you really get to love the midrange).

So I can see myself still owning a vRS for at least a good while yet as it still ticks all the boxes. Anyone come to the same conclusion or differ from this, just interested.

Yes, it's a pretty good all-rounder. Why not just keep it? Running them out-of-warranty is no hardship :)

Or look into an extended warranty, if you want added piece of mind. I agree though; there's not really much else comparable at the moment - that I can think of anyway.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it ;)

Tend to agree. Although I do like the styling on the new Fabia and wish they had a closer compromise - please note that I wouldn't be getting rid though, just dropping our older Fabia so I'd still get to own/drive it :o) But I'd expect the newer one to be more equivalent - just isn't the case (unless chipping can manage it)

Also while I hate this "car vs car" thing, in real terms, I really like the ability to use the car on the roads (even the bigger cars, certainly the 520d which seem lethargic). I'd hate to lose that edge and ability to keep the tailgaters at a distance :o)

It constantly manages to surprise and I think short of the proper hot-hatches if you get me (turbo charged super-light nutter monsters like saxo gtis), it really does well on the road.

What did I do before my Fabia vRS came along? I suppose the 'others' were just there to practice my driving skills in. As my Dad used to say once I passed my test @ a mere 17, 'Now you really learn to drive, it was all theory previously'. He approved of my vRS and how it and I were a good match, even to the point of giving me the reg plate we'd spent 20yrs chasing.

I'm proud I own a skoda vrs but nothing comes anywhare as close as the pride of being my fathers' daughter.

I quite agree - before my vRS I never had more than 12 months warranty on any car that I owned, and never really felt that I was taking a risk. I don't really think there is a direct replacement on the market - I'm looking to upsize a bit and take the hit on running costs. However, I've got 4 years pencilled in as the time to get rid of it:

  • First MOT out of warranty.
  • Based on the wear rate of the last set of tyres I'll be needing some new front tyres and decent ones aren't cheap.
  • Service will need to include brake fluid change and cam belt/water pump change.

That's going to add up to an expensive time!

I really find the VRS has spoiled me with brilliant economy and decent performance. I will run it into the ground, and hope that takes many years. Despite being the mechanic type, I am thinking of an extended warranty, that way the turbo and PAS wont go boobs up

I have my Morris 1000 to tinker with, so I think I will just let West End Skoda look after the VRS SE.

I might replace it with something totally mental, like a Westfield, and that would be the only real option. Getting a bit too old to climb (fall) in and out of a Westie though

Seriously though, properly serviced the VRS is a strong car. Stonking engine, strong 6 speed box, turbo really needs oil changed every 6000 miles, and PAS system a bit prone to failure.

5 years and 82000 miles after getting mine, and I'm not thinking of changing! It gets new oil every six months, which is slightly less than the 10k maximum, and serviced at trusted specialists - but other than that, it's pretty much left to it. Oh, I let it tick over while I'm putting the steering lock on and switching off the Bluetooth, but that's it. It's certainly not molly-coddled...

Not heard of problems with the PAS on vRSes in five years on here, I must admit (although I know older non-vRS ones are a bit prone...)

Keep it!

mk2 golf ftw, screw new stuff old stuff has charm, handling and a feeling of pure relief everytime you arrive at your destination without breaking down, its a thrill a minute is old skool:cool:

Gary's still high on petrol fumes I see :P
you just never felt that welcome relief when arriving:eek:,it makes the journey interesting:rofl:

Well in 3 years time im hoping to replace the Fabia with a Seat Leon either FR or Cupra as i will need something a little bit bigger and fancy something a bit more sporty!

Ive considered:

Focus ST - Too thirsty

Audi TT TDI - To small in the back

BMW 123d Coupe - Not bad, but probably a lil expensive

Scirocco TDI - Too small boot

The best all rounder i can see is the Leon

Octavia vRS?? :rubchin:

This is the Skoda forum after all....

;)

Steve

You need a Roomster. It handles better and can easily be made to just as fast.

I'd love an Octavia vRS (from new). But financially and securely just don't feel its right even though I could likely just do it with cash ! i.e. I believe in keeping savings, its just too big a whack of cash for me to want to spend.

On another note, probably a bad one, I'm like many of the saddos that actually is slightly endeared to the Fiat 500 (though probably not as much as many, since I have actually owned Fiats!)

Actually our Fiat was not bad though, if molly coddled and serviced appropriately (without pattern parts for instance).

We still laugh about the front shocks bouncing effect of going down the road in our Punto - apart from the cooling system (and the aftermarket waterpump failing from new) it was not too bad for a (Very basic) basic drive, though I was constantly paranoid about the cooling...

I may be mentally ill, but just wonder what the "Fiat 500 Hatchback 1.4 T-Jet Abarth" would actually be like ? (as a low cost/small "mini performance" hatch).

But, putting a sensible hat back on - I imagine it would actually be worth waiting for the new vRS instead given a choice and its not ever going to please me in the same way as the Diesel.

The Octavia is on my replacement shortlist, but I don't think it's going to last long. My last car had steering wheel controls for the stereo and I really miss them on my Fabia. As far as I can make out you can only get steering wheel controls on the Octavia vRS if you get the DSG gearbox - that makes them a rather expensive option!

Top of my shortlist is the Mazda6 Sport diesel. Performance and economy is pretty much on par with the Octavia. Price is slightly more than the Octavia but it's much better equipped and comes with the legendary Japanese build quality...

To be quite frank I would keep the Fabia vRS for a while longer.

I am just going into the third year of ownership of the little beauty and I cannot see or neither do I want another car at the moment.

It’s virtually three yrs old and it has just gone over 21,000 miles so plenty of life in the little girl at the moment.

A few months ago I went into my local Skoda dealers to view the new Superb and was impressed with it.

But while I was there I enquired about the new Fabia vRS and when I was coming out?

I was told ‘I cannot see the new Fabia vRS being put into production’

I do not thrape it and have hardly pushed it.

Stick to the Fabia for a little while longer

Loads of good turbo diesels about at the moment with massive discounts if your prepared to stand your ground at the dealers over the price.

Yeah well it was an open point to the floor, who feels like me?

Well interesting to see that my feeling that its actually still a good thing going (even after 3 full years of wear), would be the more general concensus. Guess we are only just bedded in, and both ready for many more miles then !

It was a thought (about a new shape TDi) but I am now even looking into elongating my lifetime with the old gal with a few perks

Maybe seats, the engine mod (which I looked into but went cold over) etc. I don't want to do too much in the way of mods, I like the standard car the way it is to be honest.

I've now done about 50k approaching the final 3rd year - and its been pretty fine motoring and very pleasing. Anywhere near the 170 bhp would certainly be interested to dabble with, still haven't explored this yet !

Keep the Fabia great little cars and great economy too with performance.

My warranty is up in November too and iam going to pay the £395 quoted from dealer for another years warranty because i will keep mine too.

Stick with it and enjoy

The warranty seems like a lot (unless you do a lot of mileage)

I suppose its not much to pay if something goes wrong. But if it doesn't, lets say for 2 years, then you have paid for anything major to go wrong. I'm half n half about it.

I have found something very tempting though, to consider as an alternative to the fabia vrs. What is it I bet you wonder?

Another vRS ! Except its a new Octy. Not sure though,

I doubt I will as I don't really wanna spend the money (or let my other half trash the Ferby vRS - she can keep our 1.4 for that purpose and already managed it once !)

SKODA OCTAVIA 2.0 TDI CR 170 vRS on eBay (end time 19-Sep-09 13:25:09 BST)

I get bored with cars very quickly, and tend to change them often ( too often, the wife says..) but I have had 4 Fabia vRS's, and wouldn't dicount another in the future, that's how much I rate them.

Although I have had 4 PoloTDI's, and 5 Citroen BX's, and 3 2CV's, and 3 CX's, because I like them as well.

I also liked my Mazdas, and my Jag, and my Granada, and my Passats, all of my Escorts were crap though, the Fiats were ok, and the Peugeots weren't too bad...

I could go on, but I'd be here all night.

Oh, I forgot, my only Vauxhall was sh!t.

I dont think I would trust a vauxhall diesel engine for reliability.

I've had the Ibiza since feb and despite not looking to change jobs I'm looking forward to not driving 50odd miles to work and 50odd miles home every day so that I don't need a diesel any more. diesels suck for having fun :(

I normally get bored of my cars after a month and tend to change every 4 months or so. But since i got my Fabia i've looked at nothing else and tbh i can see me actually still having it in 2.5 years times
