Cambelt query

Featured Replies

I have read all the posts on here about when to change a cambelt but I am still confused. My car is due a service. It is an 05 plate and has done 51000 and is a 2.0 tdi elegance pd140

Everywhere I am getting quotes from is saying they cambelt needs replacing at 60k but in my service manual it says belt needs changing at 80k on my model car.

Should I have it changed now or wait until nearing 80k?

Hi there, I am no expert but I have been in the same boat. I am in the process of purchasing a Skoda of around the same age/mileage as yours and all the Skoda garages say 60k or 4 years. I believe the cost also varies wildly at garages (£300 - £350 ish) so be careful.

I was told 80k/4 years whichever comes first. Yours needs doing now as your over 4 years old.

My 2.0TDI was done at 80,000 miles.

You should always go by what the dealership says, they will have the latest intervals which will obviously outdate the intervals printed in the service book.

Get it changed it'll cost you £££ instead of possibly ££££

My Cambelt is not due till 80k miles.

However mine will be getting changed at the next service (3rd Variable at about 52k) wether it needs it or not.

As has been said above better to be safe than sorry. Had a Cambelt go on a previous car and it's not funny when it does and you get a bill for a new engine

it will say the recommended interval in the handbook, or it should do? in anycase if you in doubt... get the bugger changed. its better sooner than later thats for sure. i hate shelling out for servicable items spend money on cars is only fun if its mods your buying but, its got to be done:(

Someone with a better memory might be along soon with the facts, but I'm sure VW actually reduced the service interval for cambelts a while back due to too many failing prematurely, which might explain the discrepancy?

hi i have just had my cambelt changed on my octavia 1.9 diesel and i have noticed a kinda rubbing noise that lasts for about 1 min on start up from cold ,i was wondering if anybody else encountered same and whats it likely to be,before i go back to dealers who done the belt change, would appreciate your comments.

in answer to my own question and for information purposes to others who are intersted,i took my car back to the main dealers who done the original cambelt change and they found that 1 of the new tensioners was faulty and so all done under warranty.

Just to confuse things a bit more, with my previous VW Passat the service book said to replace the cambelt at 60,000 miles but the third party garage where I got it serviced had documentary evidence to say that it had been extended to 70,000 miles. When I traded it in under the scrappage scheme it had done over 72,000 miles and was 11 years old and still on the original belt.

Skoda revised the cambelt change from 80k down to 60k. Most likely due to failures.

Most manufacturers change around 60k. There must be a reason they, and now VAG are sticking with that figure.

I change the belt on my 07 pd tdi 170 yesterday after aprox 132000 km (82.5k) For peace of mind I say change it at 60k but you can go up to 90k after that is verry risky. I say this afer checking my own belt when replaced. Dont forget the water pump and the tensioner, pulleys, all the kit, all this parts last longer but is recomended to change them too.

no mention of time?

Still 4 years. They've only revised the mileage.

Made an appointment for the 120tkm service and asked for the cambelt change. Cars with MY07 or later wont need a cambelt change untill 150tkm.

That is what the dealer said to me.

(so I will wait untill the next service, probably in about 8 months, an have it changed than).

no mention of time?

No, I can't recall that a particular time was mentioned.
