2010 Fabia vRS 178 BHP petrol

Featured Replies

A supercharger. A turbo charger. A DSG. Great. With VAG reliability it will be a liability. Would not touch one with somebody else's barge pole.

WHAT??? Engine of the year winner? Transmission of the year winner? Skoda manufacture of the year winner? not to mention all the other tut they win! As well as the other gubbens in the VAG Group. And you wouldnt touch one with a barge poll??

That has to be another contender for QUOTE OF THE YEAR!

You should try an Alfa mate, Ive heard there great............... :rotz:

That's what a warranty's for

Anyway, anyone who buys one straight away needs their head examining IMO. Give them time to iron out the creases and early niggles first. I'd always say give them 18 months of a new model first; perhaps this can be brought down to 12 with modern manufacturing methods...

Steve

Christ on a bike, the Fabia II will be nearly 5 years old by then and we'll be getting "Will the vrs mk 3 be rocket powered?" threads

Famous last words!

People always say that to me!

And you wonder why....

:D :P

:D :P

I never wonder!

I was in my local dealer this afternoon, buying a new rear wiper blade (I wish I could get it from a local motor factors), anyway I asked about the new vRS and the salesman said it will be the 1.4 TSI with the DSG next year. I asked about a manual one with it and he said that the DSG is the only gearbox that can cope with the power and Torque of the new TSI. Is this right? Thinking about it now, I'm sure you can get a 1.4TSI Golf with a manual box, I may be wrong?

You've talked to a salesman - that's your first problem :D

Power & torque of the 1.4TSI? Yeah good one  - hmmm, let me think - yes, I think VAG can just about come up with a manual setup from the parts bin that will handle it? RS4 manual anyone? :)

Steve

I was right. You can get a Golf GT TSI with a 6 speed maual or an optional 7 speed DSG. This is the original VW TSI engine with 158 BHP and not the 168 in the Cupra.

Volkswagen Golf 1.4 TSI GT - Road Test First Drive - Autocar.co.uk

Looking at the figures the Golf has only 177 lb ft of torque (178 in the Cupra) and the Furby vRS has a quoted 230 lb ft. The old Cupra TDI 160 coped with a manual. So I think you are right, I should not have relied on the salesman!

I should not have relied on the salesman!

...is the correct answer :)

177lb/ft is incidentally the same as a 1.9TDI PD100, so it's not exactly short of the stuff. And you obviously have access to the 168bhp over a wider powerband.

There's no 'coping' to it - VAG couple manual boxes upto MUCH MUCH more powerful and torquey stuff. A 3.0TDI V6 springs to mind....

Get a grip and grow up. Capitals in a post mean the poster is a prat. I don't care if it wins every award on the planet. Winning an award doesn't mean it won't give a big bill in the future, does not mean it will be reliable. I don't intend to be like those people getting huge bills now for knackered DSG's. A design award means absolutely nothing in the real world. You would either have to be obsessed with technology for it's own sake, naive beyond comprehension, have no knowledge of the practicalities of car ownership. be technically ignorant or inept, or someone who never owns a car outside of warranty (or willing to constantly pay for an after market one), to think a cheapish little car with a supercharger, turbo and DSG is a good idea.

VAG reliability is average at best.

I don't want an Alfa thanks, but thanks for the unsolicited suggestion anyway...

If you want to have a go, please learn basic English first, it's like getting a response from a thick 12 year old..

If you don't like this car, don't buy it. Simple as! lol

Only echo Babs thoughts on this, dont like it, dont buy one? Then you wont get HUGE repair bills blah blah blah. His "go" was based on fact. Yours is based on "what if's"

But carry on acting a complete and utter doosh bag mate for no reason, suits you :P

Well i've ordered the 178BHP Bocanegra Cupra and test driven the 150bhp FR. The DSG is great. The reason the car gets such good economy is partly thanks to the DSG. In drive mode the rev’s are kept very low and can even go into 7th gear relatively early. You don’t feel the gear changes and it’s a very relaxed drive. On the motorway with cruise control set to 60mph I was getting 45-50mpg for a 3 mile stretch. So yes it will meet the book figure if driven frugal.

Switching to sport mode I didn’t personally like as it was over revy and put you too far up the power band. It will be good for a straight line sprint but not really for lane’s and country roads. This is where the manual excels. You can ether use the flappy paddle or the + - on the gear stick. The gear changes are very quick and smooth. The torque and power were great (this is coming from a 200bhp Ibiza cupra driver) and you can get up some decent speeds, all without moving your hands from the wheel!

I was against the DSG at first but now I’ve driven one I think it’s great. Don’t criticise something you have not experienced. On another side note the DSG ECU learns your driving style and will get smoother over time. Yes I could have got a Clio 200 but I don’t like the looks, the tax band or the fuel figures. For me and my regular 100 mile a day drive the Cupra ticked all the box’s. So for a little over 17k I have a car with loads of toys, power and good looks. I think the new Fabia and Ibiza ranges will sell well. I know I prefer the sound of the new Cupra 100 times more than the boring old diesel clatter.

I even have the option of the 205-220BHP remap in the future. I’ve already specked the optional extra Seat Sport Breaks just in case :) Roll on January!

"a little over 17k"...

Jesus! And with the racing brakes that's getting on for £18.5k?

No No thats a little over 17K with Xenons, Racing Breaks, Convenience Pack (reversing sensors, rain sensing wipers, auto dimming rear view mirror and some coming home light thing), and Satnav Doc. Its actually closer to 18k now I look at it. Still got a very very good price :)

Along with XDS, Cruise Control, Climate Control, Folding Mirrors etc I’d say that’s a lot of car for the money.

So you actually got a discount?

Haha yeah may have ;)

So you actually got a discount?

When do you ever pay list for a car?

Sometimes when there is a 3-4 month wait. I know the scirocco lot are having trouble getting discounts at the moment. People used to get 6-8% but not recently. Their wait time is similar.

When I was at a Seat dealer recently I asked what price they could actually sell them, and the sales guy said "Seat won't give a discount" lol

Yeah it was tricky TBH. I said "I take it you want me to keep this quiet" and the bloke said "yeah if you would but we wouldn't do that price again" I'm guessing the discount was on the optional extra's rather than the car.

Sounds nice, and good little review there too

Steve

It's still a lot of money for a super-mini though!

What colour have you got it in?

It's not a supermini though. He's not bought a Fox ;)

Got in Candy White. I think it will be a little more head turing.

It's like this but with better headlights and breaks:
