Condition of Spare tyre......

Featured Replies

checked all the tyre pressures today, including the spare

Thing is, the spare ( continental ) is only a get you home as it's just legal and I was wondering if a cheap new ditch finder would be better than a premium brand with limited tread after all the steel spare is limited to 50mph anyway.

As long as its road legal thats all that really matters, as it should pass an MOT.

yes it will pass an MOT, was meaning more for grip

Spare tyres are NOT checked on an MOT. A tyres only illegal when its put on the car ;)

When you say just legal, how many mm are we talking? Either way if its above 1.6 mm it should be enough to get you to a tyre dealer aslong as you don't drive like a madman

reckon it's got about 3mm all over.

If it's legal I'd keep it and use it as a get you home only.

Personally I don't think i'd worry if it was 3mm, my front tyres atm are about 2.5 mm lol booked in to be changed next sat. Apart from being slippy in the snow/ice they're fine in dry and wet conditions

3mm all over is fine, after all its only to get you home and your not going to shred it that badly unless your going flat out when its fitted.

3mm is ok, but as its a Conti they reckon 3mm is the absolute minimum for that make of tyre, German enginering apparently

personally i would put a new none directional tyre on the spare

Instead how about a full size steel wheel or even better alloy then you dont have to worry as much

a VRS does have a full size steel wheel as a spare

I know thats what mine has :)

and oddly the 16" alloy doesn't fit into the spare wheel well properly!!!!!

Fits perfectly in my wheel well, including the tool box , so maybe you had one of those special reduced size spare wheel wells :giggle:

no no yours just uses the latest in tardis technology!

TBH id stick with what you got the spare is what it is a spare your not going to use it on big log trips evrywhere ao wats the point if it realy botheres yo go for a good multi directional

i think the words you need there cheese are.... "that trumps you sir" *said in a sean conery accent!* :p :D:giggle:

Simples -take spare out before MOT -we had a van loose a spare ( Pikeyitus -we think -cable had been cut) -and with a main dealer it went straight through -they said it didn't matter .

For a spare I'd take 3mm of Continental over a brand new ditch finder any day of the week

RUBBISH!

Direct from the government site:

http://www.direct.go.../Mot/DG_4022109

You're both correct as the two sites are saying the same thing.

The MOT manual says:

This inspection applies to

Tyres fitted to the road wheels only. The vehicle presenter should be informed when it is noticed that there is a defective tyre on a spare wheel.

Reason for rejection

b. Special lightweight or space saving wheels and tyres fitted as road wheels

and the MOT website says:

The tyres and wheels

Their condition, security, size, type and tread depth. Spare tyres are not inspected.

A road wheel is just that, a wheel which is fitted to the cars axle. Spare wheels are only advised on if they are readily visible/accessible, such as situated in a cradle under the car and not buried in the boot.

If you present a car for test with the spare fitted then it is deemed a road wheel and as such must meet the requirements.
