Dodgy Heater/Air Con?

Featured Replies

Last night travelling home, the heat coming out the vents was almost burning. I had the air-con on, and it temp was about 19/20degC - so I switched it to 16 (cold) but still no change. I was having to open windows to get some cool air inside - it felt like 40degC inside.

Anyone had any problems remotely like this before in the past? Any ideas if I could look for something under the bonet to check? or is it all hidden away under the dashboard?

Regards,

Colin (FlyingScot) reported something similar a few days ago.... is it consistently hot, or does turning the engine off and on clear it?

Well, I couldn't turn off the engine - as I was on the motorway at the time :D

Anyway, what I've been noticing are a couple of things:-

1. Stood at lights I've heard the air-con give a rumbling type sound - I turn it off and it stops.

2. When I've been doing motorway journeys with the air-con on, if I hit a bit of traffic and have to take the foot off the gas, a huge rush of hot air comes through the vents into the cabin.

Now last night all was ok doing my usual M40, M42, M5, M6 route, but I noticed it was getting a little bit chilly - so I upped the temperature from 18degC to 20degC not much change but it helps. But still nothing, anyway I had to stop at the lights on the roundabout A556/M6 junction 19. A huge waft of hot air came through the vents. If you placed your hand over the vent it was almost burning.

I switched the temperature guage down to cold straight away - but nothing. I kept driving getting a little more concerned - and hotter!

I turned off the air-con and back-on - again nothing.

I put the fan on fast to try and blow out the heat from the heater - still didn't seem to do anything.

I opened windows to get some cool air inside - that worked, but still didn't get me any closer to what the hell was going on. If the air-con is supposed to cool - is there a chance its f.c.u.k.ed? Does that rumbling sound I've been hearing recently mean it was on its way to expiry - which it now has? Does turning the fan on turn the heater on? or does setting the temperature above 16degC turn the heater on?

Oh, I've not been out in the car since last night - gotta take a trip to see the girlfriend later, so I will report any more findings after that. But its all a bit of a worry. Only 2 years old aswell!!!!! The car that is.. not the girlfriend! :D

Regards,

This is a known issue, and needs a new control unit!

Sometimes jiggling all the controls about sorts it for a while, then it creeps back on toasty setting again!

Really? Not come across that one as yet. It really needs to be checked on diag equipment, have had a few flap motos giving problems recently, I usually reset them and see how it goes, usually end up needing a new motor.

But if the car is only two years old it should be in warranty shouldnt it? If so book it into your local dealer.

Flyingscot got his car back after having work done to cure a leak... your symptoms sound similar to his.

I've just checked into the Warranty situation..

I've got warranty upto 60,000 miles in the third year.. I've done 50,800 as it stands now, so I'm still covered.

Someone just mentioned a leak - if that is so, where would it be coming from? Would it be a visible drip onto the road? I've not noticed anything.. although not really been looking much for leaks and such.

I've got it booked in for Thursday morning. Service guy said he'll put the computer on it and see what it has recorded. Assuming by that he means a VAGCOM unit or summat.. anyhow - I've gotta wait until then. As I booked it though, I forgot I was to be working in Sheffield that day, opposite ends of the country and not in Oxfordshire like normal. :D However, I think I'll get it checked before going to Sheffield in it.

Thanks for responses so far..

Hello, my ears are burning. It is a new control unit that is required, which I am currenty waiting on and sounds very similar to my problems. I have to go to work so will update later on tonight.

look forward to hearing it..

Right, where to start. My car regularly mists up, and takes yonks to clear. It also did this problem with getting increasingly warm until it's boiling. It can be solved by either flicking on air-con, re-circ buttons and switching engine off. Misting up was a slight water leak in the doors and that explains why it takes ages to clear, although the ventilation wasn't helped by the system misbehaving in the manner above! This seems to require a part, I think it is either a sensor or control unit I can't remember which, they told me- but it was at 5pm yesterday!

Anyways it is an order job for part and until then don't use the heater, just heated seats.

Good to see heated seats having a use ;)

What a posh car having an emergyency heating system

I had the same problem with the heater getting very hot and not cooling when adjusting the knob (ooh-eer missus). Also on cold mornings, it took ages to demist even with a/c on. I too thought I had a major problem.

However. On a very quiet day at work last week, I took the pollen filter out and to my horror, my passenger footwell filled up with half a tree!! Luckily had a new filter to hand as I serviced it a couple of weeks ago, whacked it in and hey presto, I now have a fully functional heater again.

Last night took the trip to the girlfriends and as the windows started misting up I put the air-con on, not the heater. As it felt like an ice-cube I gathered all is ok with the air-con, but I decided not too try out the heater - I had visions of flame coming through the air vents.. :(

Anyway, so are we saying the heater unit can be affected by clogged pollen filters? Mine was changed with all the other filters around 42000 miles, are they that easy to get clogged up? Where are they under the bonnet - anyone got a pic?

And flyingscot - what's this leak in the doors you are on about? What goes through the inside of the doors then?

Generally if my windows are fogged up in the morning it takes about 2-5 minutes for them to clear, is that normal?

Regards,

My leak was a slight water ingress in the bottom door seals. It didn't leak enough to leave wet carpets etc, but there was water around the plastic area. They replaced all the door seals to be on the safe side and as a result, it now has solved problem, as today would have been a classic example of my car misting up but it didn't!

Yeah have the same issue, going to take it in when I get my squeeky seat sorted..... Ahhh who needs heaters anyhow!

Anybody want to enlighten me on how to check the pollen filter, and I'll check that my dealer checked that!

A post from Skomaz:

On a Fabia estate the pollen filter is indeed located behind the dashboard in the passenger footwell and can be accessed by hanging upside down in the footwell. It's covered by a rectangular cap about 9x2 inches that has two sliding latches on it. The filter itself can be a bugger to replace though as space is tight' date=' it only goes in one way round and when putting it in can catch on other bits of trim!

The last two times I've had mine replaced at the dealers I've ended up re-fitting it myself as it wasn't quite sealed right and whistled so beware. If it does whistle and you can't get it to seal properly use some foam draft excluder (the self adhesive type for household doors) to fill the gap!

if it looks a bugger to do, I'll avoid it in the future.. :D

Regards,

It's not hard, just fiddly. Mine was clean meaning garage checked it.

the control unit is indeed defective.. and the part is on back-order with Skoda, none available in the U.K. and will take about 5 to 10 days to arrive.

However, I also made the point of telling they guy at the garage I do have to use the air-con a lot to keep the windows mist free, which he didn't like the sound of. He told me of the little rain gulleys to check to keep clear of water and leaves etc., but he said when the car comes in again for the contol unit replacement, they'll look through all the air-con system, check for leaks etc., and he will also replace the pollen filter, even though its due to be changed at 60000.

He did assure me though, even though the heater may get hotter than it should be doing there's no danger of it catching fire etc. and so I've been using it again, it does in fact seem to be behaving itself - he did also say that they reset things using the computer so it could start behaving itself again, but then it could start going screwy at any time and not to rely on it as a definite solution - which is fair enough.

So some good news - at least i'm not freezing my ar$e off in the car any more.. :D

Regards,

Reset mine with VAGCOM, and it seems to be behaving itself as well? odd... oh well keep an eye on it there was a thermostat warning on the vagcom.... Probably defective unit as well so I'll take it in.....

My Furby VRS is doing exactly the same thing at the moment. Will be contacting my dealer to get it fixed. It seems to get so hot that it almost burns my hands when placed in front of the vents. Changing the control settings do not stop it once it starts even turning the fan off and switching it to cold makes no difference

I'm Not having a good run at the moment - also just had my front bumper replaced due to bad paint job at the factory. Paint peeling off in several places. Must have been a known issue because skoda technical approved the work very quickly with my dealer

On the upside it's got rid of all the stone chips after 27000 miles of motoring
