To remap or not to remap?

Featured Replies

Hi. Im contemplating whether or not to bite the bullet and go for a Remap on my 53 Octy VRS. I was looking at the Revotecknik stage 1 (?) generic map which allegedly sees 210 BHP and increased torque. What are peoples opinions on remaps in general on the mk1? What are the downsides? My car has covered 65k miles and is in good condition mechanically with a Full Service History. Am I likely to have many problems? Any advice or opinions gratefully received.

Thanks, Dan

Do it!

Hit the search mate at the bottom of the Octy 1 section and i would say it will take you a few days to look thru all the posts.

If done right mate youll never look back. but if done wrong you wont like it and youll hate the car after and want rid so Id do some research and get it done properly. have fun lookin mate

Would you come down to the Isle of Wight to do it? ;)

Been thinking exactly the same thing for mine, umming and aahing, 51 plate with 85k on, standard apart form susp mods.

Have read all the post and know that coils are probably the first thing to go. Guess as long as the place is reputable, you pay your money and take your chance. Haven't heard anything negative about getting it done apart from maybe decrease in life expectancy of certain parts. But at a guess if its just for the occasional right foot moment its not going to wear things down that much quicker, but on another point, if the engine is weak somewhere, this will show it.

Was going to look at rs tuning as they're only a few miles away, however at that price from shark its tempting even with the extra fuel cost the drive back would be fun!

They'll come to you to do it, if I've understood their blurb correctly? Although I guess there are limits on this, recoding the control module costs £10 according to the website, but I don't suppose they'd come all the way to Humberside and do it for £10!

I have an RS Tuning map on mine and it's fantastic! After three different generic maps on mine, I finally stumped up the cash for the custom map and it has been worth every penny. Any questions, just pm me and I'll try to help. Alternatively, book yourself in at RS Tuning and go for it. And no, I'm not on commission, just a very happy customer. :)

I've had an R-Tech remap for well over a year now and I haven't had to replace any coil packs or anything else.

DO IT!!!!!

You will not regret it (unless it is a crap map lol)

A good stage 1 remap makes the vRS what it should have been from the factory.Enjoy

Have a revo stage 1 remap no problems with coils, i changed my plugs, dv and n75 before the remap, a remap can highlight any weak spots in these areas.

Like you i done suspension mods first, then after having the car 2 years i finally had a remap never looked back!

Go for it you wont be dissapointed.

Unlike you I have done it the other way round - I was way too impatient to do things properly. There are times when I know the suspension and brakes should have been done first. :(

Remap is next on my list of things to do, again! (keeps getting nudged down by more crucial things!)

RS tuning or P-Torque for me.

I'd say get a free trial from one of the big tuners like APR or REVO, and it'll soon convince you!

I've just had a new clutch so the car's well up for the power now.

I was very cautious of a trial as after the trial ends it doesn't return to standard, instead it goes to a Revo stock map. What difference this makes I don't know but I didn't like the sound of it.

I have a Revo stage 1 on my otherwise stock car and it seems to make a big difference even though it did cause all of my original coil packs to fail one by one (the ones fitted in 2002 were of the flakey variety!) The torque is the big jump, on slippery winter roads putting the power down in second can be a bit tricky if you have a lead foot and as for power in first, forget it :p

where do you get a revo map from?

hi all

i have a octy 1 vrs 2001 and the revo remap is a must

when i bought the car it already had a map on it (not revo) and it was crap i thought the problem was with the car always going into limp mode . i was assured the map was good but after 6 months of replacing almost every pipe and connector i bit the bullet and took the car to revo they put the trial map stage 1 on and my car was instantly fixed so when the trial ran out i took the car back and paid to have it full time i have never looked back the car pulls like a train .i have since been back after doing more mods and had the map lifted to stage 2  and i would definitely would recommend this to anyone thinking of a remap .

just one more thing i got a n75j valve and i found i had a 3psi boost increase and more aggressive acceleration well worth doing in my opinion.

revo stage 2

piper cross pnl filter

powerflow wake the dead cat back

std cat

forge adjustable split-r DV

boost gauge in dash vent

n75j valve

4 bar fpr

modded boost pipes

RS mate Paul gets my vote. you wont regret it lol

Remap is a must, depending on what you want to Id get all other mods done first ie Cat back or better still turbo back, TIP, FMIC pos, CAI or modify the std box and fit a PX filter or K&N.

if not you will get a nice boost from jus a remap then if you do the rest after you will really need a remap again to get the best of it. I made that mistake after promisin I wouldnt, I am on my 4th map after a lot af p155in around with crap ones.

all best

Go for it! You will not regret it if you get it done right. It's the first thing i did to my '02 vrs estate and the difference was huge. Been almost 6 months since having mine done now. Have added the Forge N75 valve recently and still gives me loads of smiles per mile and shocks the hell out of over confident Beemer drivers lol!

Oright Billy! Keep forgetting you've changed your name!

Yeah I've got my eyes on a Piper turbo-back, but not sure if I can afford that and a remap. The standard exhausts on these cars are invincible, so it'll probably never get to the point were I have a good excuse!

If you're ever up north on a weekend we should meet up and hit the RR at RS tuning or something.

sounds good mate lol,

Yea sorry for the confusion, didnt think Claytarget_god was appropriate now lol. I know what you mean about the zorsts, they are pritty good, only thing to really go is the centre bracket which is just a case of welding back together properly £5 i had it done for. get the pipe turbo back first tho before going to Paul, as he custom maps it which takes a few hr he can get the best out of all the mods, I would say if going for just a stage 1 APR / Revo then its not too bad as they are just around about for all cars then they will just tweek some files if the dealers are putting them on cars with mod. I think anyway, but def get all the mods done first,

the good thing with RS tuning is that if you have his map on and then you say do the zorst/ CAI or something he will tweek the map for a small price, which is good, not sure if you get that from APR, Revo + others

end of the day tho mate you choos whats close ish to you and reasonable, so for someone down south they not really gonna drive to Leeds for a map, they would go to Jabba for instance, all depends on were you are and what is available to you

Im sure you wont regret having the car done tho mate.

hi , sorry too bring an old thread up from the past . whats the safeist that you can a MK1 VRS to ? ive been told not to go past 215BHP as you will be asking for trouble . how true is this ? i know it burns coils out but what else ?

From what I have heard clutches.

You won't be seeing much past that anyway with a simple remap. Some people claim more than 210/215 bhp with a standard car and a remap, but in reality that's being optimistic. There are people running more than the 215bhp you quoted, but they've had to spend a bit of money in terms of exhaust etc to make things flow and breathe easier.

i currently run 219bhp

ive uprated the tip, intercooler intake,d.v with harder springs and the air intake.

did all this b4 themap along with a better water pump, brakes and cambelt change

i always carry a couple of spare coil packs as they are a weak point of any 1.820v T engine mapped or not, but obviously runnin more power n boost will flag up weak ones earlier than not!

2 have popped in 18 months so not bad IMO and no other probs!

I wud recommend the tip upgrade, but also suspension/chassis and brake upgrades are always sensible

but all that siad a map is def the best mod ive ever done on any car ive owned for the money-the smile stays on ur face(but not on the drivers who just think ur "only a skoda"lmao!)

i never really apprciated how a good fast road brake set up cud be until i did it.Some cars are quicker but a raely find one that can outbrake me!

main things to do just for power is get the cat changed for a 200 cell. the std DP is ok but could do with changing along wi the system, then the TIP and a Panel filter and thats it really, FMIC would be good too to keep temps down so you can maintain the power.

I am using the std DP with the 200cell + 2.5" system and mine was 226/262 since then Ive put the TIP on so I need to tweek the map at RSTuning to get best out of it but really need the DP first.

Mine is really smooth and the delivery is really nice.

Ive never had a Coil pack go on me in 5 year.
