Could gocompare / indep garage / camskill have brought down the cost much?

got the tyres from camskill and what a good service that was  £170 for 2 tyres plus £15 a corner to fit at ATS aint bad........better than $130 -£170 a tyre at kwick fit.

main cost insurance........£650 :'(

i beleive Skoda do something where you pay so much a month and this covers service costs, parts labour etc and for a little more even replacement tyres! not sure if its only on new vehicles though. i get my new vrs on the 1st March and it is a policy i reckon i will certainly be taking out, we can all do without months like your having this month mate

I was quoted £113 a month... Decided to put £50 a month to one side instead..

With the greatest respect I can understand why you say that but you're wrong.

1) I SAVED over £1800 by taking finance on my RAV as Toyota did a £2,200 contribution, I let it run a month then cleared it saving myself £1800 off what was at the time the cheapest new official XTR in the UK.

2) With my last car we'd just purchased a new DSG Golf for cash and i'd cleared my Graduate loan in the same week. I couldn't easily lay my hands on £2k without penalty or taking out some form of finance, the fuel costs on my old car were £4-500 a month, I could have held off making the purchase for 2-3 months and paid out £1200-1500 in fuel, had to tax and MOT my old car and change the front tyres and a new set of disc's/pads would be due in that time. Finance cost me less than £200 over the full term and my new fuel bill was £120-150 a month, that's £360-450 over 3 months or a saving of £840-£1050 saved on fuel alone.

What I would agree with is that the wrong finance is bad but when used correctly it's a very useful tool that can save you money.

Is this a thread to share our car running costs with others? Or is it sympathy you want? :)

Here's mine:

Annual car tax - 128€

Diesel tax - 489€

Insurance - 770€ (includes the optional moose-collision waiver)

Service - 426,22€ (mine was yesterday)

This totals about 1800€ (about 150€ a month).

I plan to keep the car for 5 years, and assume 3500€ a year for depreciation (that's about 300€ a month).

So every month I put away 450€, and when the bills come (most arrive in August), then there's no shock :)

Someone once told me never to borrow money unless it was to buy something that would likely increase in value (=cars don't usually). He also told me, "if you don't have the cash to buy something, then you're trying to live beyond your means". I'm not preaching this to anyone, but it's worked ok for me so far in life, well of course it wasn't so nice going through the tough period driving an old wreck :( But getting in a position to be able to "create your own finance", should be everyone's target. You win twice, firstly by making interest on your monthly saving, then you win a second time by not having to pay out interest for the finance. Of course there are times when finance make sense, but these are just a couple of percent of all finance transactions.

"Moose collision waiver" - I love it! :giggle: I guess it must be a real risk in Finland

:D Oh yes :)

Elk accident cover

The cover compensates for loss or damage caused directly

by a collision with an elk, reindeer or deer. The elk and deer

accident cover included in the Super Motor Insurance additionally

covers collisions with other wild animals. Elk accident

cover does not provide indemnity for damage that results from

avoiding a collision with animals. If the motor vehicle has

collision cover, the damage will be compensated for under

this insurance.
