Feeling guilty about overtaking in my Fabia

Perhaps it is a legacy of a driving style I adopted from driving my Estelles (1/3 - 1/2 throttle (positive press), change up at 3000 RPM until speed limit is met and then change to highest practical gear and cruise), but I am finding that on dual carriageways I am overtaking most cars (with the exception of speeding Subaru's etc.) My style is that I get up to cruising speed in a positive manner without the pre-amble of working slowly through the gears. My fuel consumption is not affected and I am not 'pushing' the car -just being positive. Using this method sees me past almost all in the left lane traffic - even big and powerful cars.

I cannot help but wonder whether I am perceived as being 'pushy' or 'trying it on' in my small car as quite often the cars that I passed earlier will then speed past later on at over the speed limit. There must be something in accelerating slowly that I am missing - eveyone seems to be doing it. Anyway, I just wondered what you all find or do in your Fabia's - do you just pick up the speed slowly and stay behind the other cars doing the same or do you just get up to speed as I do?

I love it when people pull into the right lane at the lights as if they're going to go super fast (expecting me to go slow or something) - and even in the 1.3 Favorit Estate I could pull away from wel over 75% of them leaving them for dead.

Not that I am condoning "racing" on the public highway, like you can "race" in a 1.3 skoda estate :rofl:

Nope, nothing to feel guilty about in that at all!

I'd continue to drive in this manner - it makes sense, so carry on :thumbup:

As for this glacial acceleration thing, they believe that they're "saving fuel".

Thanks for the thoughts - I didn't want to continue doing something thinking it is right but all along doing something wrong. I will add that even with my 105 Estelle I am off and away before many people (and they can't stand seeing an 80's Skoda come past their shiny Honda).

My driving is far from economical it consists of accelerating hard up to the speed limit and then cruising i overtake toads of cars doing tis and they often get jealous and try and overtake me again (trouble is when i see them i change down and speed up and they shy off) I do seem to get tailgated alot inb the skoda even if i am doing going a bit over and when i do speed up they dont bother catching up wierd ! love it tho just tease other cars! :rofl::thumbup:

I did 300 miles on M5 and A30 this weekend and encountered pretty much all types of driving.

Super fast slip road acceleration and 110mph cruise off into the distance (BMW RS4)

100mph cruise on the rev limiter (Saxo!)

Ridiculously slow acceleration and then scorching past at 100mph a few miles later (BMW 5 series)

65mph middle lane driver (Daewoo Matiz)

Constant yo-yoing speed between 60 and 85 (Ford Ka)

The final one even earned ME a shake of the head from the driver when i overtook him for the 5th time - what did I do given i'd spent the entire journey at a constant speed thanks to cruise control?!

Be confident and happy in your driving.

If it works for you and you're not overly agressive or causing a nuisance (middle lane Matiz take note!!) continue as you are

Well I don't worry what other drivers think, but I don't want to be using an antisocial driving style without knowing it.

Sounds like I will just carry on as I have always done then.

Accelerate hard down the slip road, then cruise. and 90% of the cars on the slip road then go shooting past about a mile later.. sounds like my journey to/from work.

Me too, most the time. Can't see the point of slow accelleration, in fact, it annoys me.

Your driving style is good for the VNT part of the turbo. The slow acceleration to save fuel is a myth anyway. Unless you use full throttle the fuel used is almost the same. To take a mass from one speed to another requires a certain amount of energy. That energy can be spread over time (slow acceleration) or done quickly. The energy required is the same. The minimal fuel saving of slow acceleration is negated due to longer rolling tyre friction.

3000 RPM is ideal to increase EGT and burn off soot from the turbo. Plus you get home quicker :rofl:

I utilise the full acceleration of my vRS and its remap, so does SWMBO if she's driving it, it's the whole point of the car IMO. I've tried accelerating slowly, but the novelty wears off after about 200 metres unto the journey!! Although sometimes for a bit of variety I accelerate gently until third gear THEN floor it.

I tend to accelerate fairly gently to save the front tyres, but do often go second to fourth on the way up and the same on the way down. I used to rally drive, and must admit that sometimes I do embarrass drivers who pull up in the right lane and assume that I am going to be slow off the line - part of the fun of driving a furby vrs :-) If I get tailgated whilst giving reasonable room in front waiting for a slower driver to pull over left, I also usually feel obliged to floor it once the slower car has pulled over, and usually leave the tailgater well behind up to speed limit, then I pull over and let the pr*t go flying by to be clocked by the next speed camera or patrol car. Its a fun thing :-)

As far as Im concerned yes.... as long as its clear of course. At the end of the day as long as your not driving eratically or dangerously its all good!

And besides it takes alot of restraint to accelerate slowly in a vRS

Sounds to me like we all have this style in common! :)

I'm fairly sure that some of the advanced driving manuals advocate accelerating as you do ie not crawling alway from the lights and not driving like a 17 in a Nova participating in the Traffic Light Grand Prix.

ive gota say in the skoda i tend to drive it with strong acelaration however in my dads jag or other very fast or rapid cars i tend to drive with slow acceleration which seems to anoy evryone thinking im gona speed off then once evryone who has a pair has overtaken me then over take them when safe to do so(often seeing their smiles)

That was my thoughts exactly until it cost me £60, 3 points and a sit in a white Volvo estate.

I now drive at Warp speed not Warp speed Plus

I did say positive progress, not illegal progress, haha! Being plod myself, on the 4 week police driving course we have to do before we're allowed near the drivers seat of a patrol car you are taught to make postive progress - accelarating smoothly and quickly through each gear changing gear more or less at the end of the rev range for each gear to acchieve your cruising speed as quickly as possible. As a police driver I feel I should set some sort of an example to other road users, so I will never break the speed limit in the patrol car unless I'm blue-lighting it to a job when we're allowed a few statutory exemptions, driving over the speed limit being one of them, the other two being that we can treat red lights as give way signs and also drive on the wrong side of keep left barriers as long as it is safe to do so.

Nothing wrong with being the fastest to get up to the speed limit ;) better than dawdling and then breaking the speed limit as I find most other drivers do.

stupid question but what hapens if a patrol car is clocked by a speed camera? :giggle:

That's strange, I didn't realize that 14 year-olds were allowed to drive on the road...............

(As opposed to those who have an I.Q. of 14, and this poster appears to qualify on both counts...)
