Has anyone installed a cigarette socket in the top dash box?

Featured Replies

I know it it’s not the most OEM install but I didn’t bother doing it cleaner sins it wouldn’t be visible under the tomtom docking station I have made.

But I serves it purpose by applying power to the unit ;)

Now why didn't I think of that?

Oh I know - because I am all fingers and thumbs!

Anyone fancy making me one of these - for a fee of course?!!

I'm quite happy with this, I didn't do the electrics myself by the way, I used an auto electrician recommended by my Skoda dealer

Nice work

Is the Garmin usable when plugged into the USB charger, or does it just sit in charging mode like when connected to a PC?

It sure is, that's the whole point really :giggle: The Garmin 1690 comes with a bracket with a micro USB socket in it, when you plug a USB cable into that it powers the device. If you plug the same cable directly into the Garmin it puts it into 'PC mode'.

Great

Just checking as my poverty spec Garmin Nuvi 205 doesn't have that bracket with a micro USB socket in it so mine just sits in charging mode when plugged into the USB.

Might be worth looking into that, on another thread a member has mentioned the same issue. I reckon you could open up the cable and snip some wires (the data ones presumably)?

i really like the dock as well, the one that you have mounted your sat nav in,

any one able to do these i would Love an iphone one

That looks excellent, what mount are you using - ie, how it it attached to the base of the top box?

The first picture in the series above shows the disk that I have stuck to the lid of the box, that's where my Garmin attaches to using the supplied bracket. A bit like this one.

Is the lid of that little box strong enough to support the sat nav?

Hi all,

I've finally had the work done, the Cigarette adaptor has tapped into a switched live so the unit will prompt you for if you want it to turn off when you turn igntion off. It will also power up automatically when you turn the key.

First picture is of the storage box open, you'll see the new cigarette socket installed in lower right, space is tight but I had a resolution for that. Also, upper right you can see the disk that came with my Garmin 1690 and I've attached it to the underside of the storage box.

Next is a picture of the tiny right angle USB extender that I will use to get access to the socket micro USB (from Maplin).

Here is that same lead now connected to the Maplin micro USB adapter that I have fitted to the cigarette socket.

And finally, in situ. The Sat Nav is at just the right height and much closer to the steering wheel that it would be if mounted on the screen. The disk holds it securely, but if all else fails and it falls off, it won't go far because it's attached by the USB cable.

How much did the auto electrician charge if you don't mind me asking

If its not, it'll just close itself and the garmin will wedge it open

for an iphone, all you need to do is use the same system and get a cheap iphone mount from ebay. Or use the iphone TomTom mount

The lid easily supports the Sat Nav, and as octaviaconvert says, if it wasn' strong enough the bottom of the Sat Nav gently rests agains the dash top box edge anyway and doesn't rub.

The auto electrician charged me £40 and that included coming to my house and doing the work on the drive - yes I could have done the work myself if I was confident and yes, maybe other electricians are cheaper - I'm not bothered :)

where did you get the pad thing to stick it to the dash, if i got a tom tom iphone holder does it just suction onto the pad thingy

TomTom and Garmin Both sell the pads, and basically yes, its just a rubber disc that gives a smooth surface for mounting the suction cup

My TomTom and Garmin that I've had in the past both came with one of those discs... I'm sure Halfords would have something similar

Amazon or eBay probably have them too

does the cigarette ligher thingy in the wee box on the dash need drilled through then

I have a mount that I use with mine. Will post some pics up tomorrow if I get time :)

Well there's no existing hole, so yes!

  • 1 month later...

Dodgy - Where did you get the socket from?

Is the 1690 the only sat nav that will operate whilst plugged into usb (via cradle) or are there others? Also where did the Skoda splash screen come from? Link maybe? Makes it look slightly OEM

  • Author

The splash screen is nothing clever, just google the Skoda logo and save it in the pictures directory of your satnav and choose to show it in your options.

Not sure which sat-navs have the USB via cradle options, hopefully others will respond.

From the bay of 'E' Will :) Mine was an OEM VW part, I just searched for cigarette socket on there

Here's one (not OEM VW though) - http://cgi.ebay.co.u...=item3effabe9d4

Thanks Dodgy  One worth knowing for the future

Now that is nice! Good job :)

ooohhh I was thinking of doing just that today!!! esp. since tomtom have sent me an 8quid voucher which i could use towards another dock!

:) nice job
