DRL Aggression

Featured Replies

I like them and if my car had them, they'd be on. I drove a bit in Denmark a year or two ago where it's law to use your lights and it makes oncoming traffic a lot easier to see. No contest IMO.

I have DRL but dont have an opinion on them as I cant see them. Only thing I would say in their defence is that I ride a motorbike and would never dream of riding it without any lights even in daylight as people see me better.

Never in 8 months encountered any aggression or comments regarding them.

OCScene.

I like my DRL LED's

They look cool

If you dont like them on your car, turn them off.

Rant over!!

They look ok on a £40000 Audi or Merc but out of place on a £17000 Skoda!!

Some people make me laugh - a website against them! Is there a website against volvo's too?.....Pathetic.

Had some old bloke (too old to drive imho) in his aging Corrolla flash his lights on and off at me like a xmas tree. all this did was cause me to loose concentration wandering what the hell he was doing...Then i saw him pointing at the DRL's as if they were fogs. He was soon corrected by my Xenon's, full beam and front fogs and my finger pointing to the lights!!

If im a badge snob then I would not be currently expecting delivery of a Octavia Estate! :dull:

Im just realistic and as much as i have loved my prevoius 2 Skoda cars ( a MK1 Octavia VRS) and a Fabia 1.4 Elegance, i am able to appreciate the vast difference in quality between a BMW, Audi , Mercedez-Benz and a Skoda!

I dont turn my fogs lights on, on my van during the day to try to impersonate a Bentley!! I would look daft! As, in my opinion, cheaper cars with DRL's on do.

All opinion of course.

Oh dear....

DRL's are here to stay - live with it - they are legal....unlike fog lights when its NOT foggy!

and on a seperate note what is the vast quality difference between a Skoda and an Audi?

I'm sure you'll be happy that a S max is now wearing this LED DRL too, that's far from a £40k posh car.

And I thought the ford owning chav drivers would adore them!!

A couple of years ago I had a 350SLK Merc. Have you ever had a Merc ? Believe me the switchgear in the Skofa was better. The Skoda also felt more solid.

The FL Octavia Ones are awful things.

On a VRS they are low and very bright, but if you know the octy you know they are not fogs.

On the other cars they do actually look like fogs as they are in the fog light and are also very bright too.

The BMW halo's are a good way of doing it IMHO.

Can't speak about Audis, but you're right about the quality being different between Skodas, Beemers and Mercs.

Skodas and Beemers felt properly built.

Mercedes haven't been built properly since the mid 1990's!

That's why I bought my vRS. If you thought Mercs/Beemers were better, why on earth did you buy yours?

Let's be clear here, we might all have different SUBJECTIVE opinions about the quality of a BMW, Audi , Mercedez-Benz and a Skoda in terms of the perceived look, feel, sound and smell (I don't think taste counts!).

But those opinions bear no relevance to the OBJECTIVE quality of those cars in terms of how well they are built. Year after year, Skoda vies with the Japanese in being at the top end, while the other listed marques languish in their wake. Fact.

Incidentally, how cheap and nasty are those little rows of lights running along the top of Audi headlights? Naffer than a wooden bead car cover...

IF i had £40000, trust me I would not have visited a Skoda showroom!

If I had £40,000, I would have bought and paid for my Octavia vRS and put the remaining £23K towards the mortgage ;)

Do you think these Forums are really for you ? Believe me if I had 40k to spend on a car I would have still ordered my Scout and had the rest in the bank.

Oh I suppose I could have had a 4 or 5 year old Audi Allroad ? Maybe older ?

Damn wish I had done that now. Bet it's MUCH better but together than the Scout.

Using dipped xenon headlights as DRLs invites confusion, as has been discussed here, with other drivers assuming that a flash is an invitation to pull out. It is easy for a xenon light to produce an unwanted flash because of the very tight beam pattern. This was less of a problem with halogen lights as the cut-off was far less pronounced so producing a far less notorious flash when for instance the vehicle moved up over a road bump. Having dedicated high intensity DRLs avoids that problem, one cannot get inadvertently flashed by them because they are high intensity from all angles.

I personally find that they do work, I notice that people at junctions waiting to turn right taking that little bit longer to look properly when they see me coming whereas when I was driving without DRLs in a similar coloured car they would have simply pulled out on me even to the extent of having to emergency brake to avoid collisions. As for the brightness well they are for daytime so they ermm need to be bright otherwise whats the point ?

If I had £40,000 knowing what I do now then I would still have the skoda and spend the rest on a motorbike or two . . .

IF i had £40000, trust me I would not have visited a Skoda showroom!

I had more than £40k and I visited a Skoda showroom!

I also own a BMW (2008 5-series) and have previously owned Mercedes and a 7-series BMW. Just because someone has a bit of money available doesn't mean they want to spend it unnecessarily or be a snob. My Skoda vRS was stunning value for money and most of the components are made by the same companies that supply the other German brands. I believe that the car overall does bear comparison with the 'premium' brands - the differences mostly relate to the trim, rather than the core engine and chassis components.

I also shop at Aldi and Lidl BTW! They often have better stuff than the supermarkets like Sainsbury's and Waitrose.

The same lens units are used in both the HID and Halogen light units. The cut-off is the projected image of the metal shield behind the lens. Neither type of headlight should produce anything that could be interpreted as a 'flash'.

I have recently seen a Chrysler 300 C "Dressed Up" to look like a Bentley !!!!!....sad or wot ?

Somewhat off topic I know; but just trying to lighten things up a little !! :giggle:

Each to their own- whatever makes you happy I suppose. If I had 40k I'd keep the vRS and buy a lockup to keep an Elise or Caterham 7 in. ;)

Back on topic... (because it's partly my fault it's derailed!) :(

I used to have a smoky metallic grey car, and it wasn't very visible around sunset if people were looking out of the corner of their eye. After a couple of near misses and conversations with friends, I kept my low-level lights on and it made a world of difference. People didn't pull out on me very much.

If you've got a car in a vibrant colour you might not need DRL's. But if you don't then I'm convinced they help you. I know that not everyone agrees, but I keep (low-level) lights on all the time when driving my pre-FL VRS, and will probably keep doing so unless someone convinces me to buy one in yellow! ;)

If I had £40k I'd be putting it into property, not a car.

If I had £400k, then I might put it into a Ducati Desmosedici RR...

ducati-desmosedici-rr-front.jpg

Oh and of course a tuned Race Blue vRS, with all of the options.

Mind you I'd only be left with £325k... :o

I did say I was going to buy a lockup. Doesn't that count as investing in property? :giggle:

I have put a fair bit of money into property over the last 20 years (I own several houses) - but trust me when I say the last few years (inc this year) have not been the best time to put money into property!. Cash is staying under the bed at the moment (figuratively speaking).

Back on the subject of DRL's - my vRS came with DRL's enabled (that's how they leave the factory) and I left them on because its a silver car - in less than ideal conditions silver can be a bit hard to see. In the same way my son always switches the headlights on when driving his black Ibiza. Better to err on the side of caution I think.

I saw a Porsche 911 today with identical DRL's to the Octy vRS, and they were on.

If it's good enough for a 911........

Personally I don't like Audi's DRl`s in the headlights ,it doesn't matter how much you spend if a car is cool it is cool, the DS3 is a really cool car< just ordered 4 wife.> B) DRL`s on that
