Calm down chaps ;)

I think I've just ****ed me sen........

PMSL

can we get this back on topic please.....?

vRS or 4x4 was the question.... ? do we know if is hatch or estate? if hatch i would go vRS but if i wanted an estate i would go 4x4 as you gain more than you lose over the vRS as the estate is not setup the same and comes with 16" anyway on the vRS .... the estate is more lifestyle and thus you would assume more likely to be involved in other pursuits... towing etc in which 4x4 would be useful...

the hatch however is better suited to vRS trim and doesnt sit as well on stock suspension - the estate gets away with the ride height better.

the estate is better for load lugging / shagging (gay or straight) avoid vRS hatch for big loads (of cargo... ) as the braces behind the seats can hinder....

the vRS estate is better

I couldn't agree more....... :D

can we get this back on topic please.....?

Why couldnt you have posted such a useful reply earlier?

Nice weekends posting.

Bang out of order Mr. Moderator sir. Grow up.

And as for 'who started the whole gay thing' it doesn't matter. I didn't like that sort of humour when it started on here and I don't like it now. As Gary pointed out it's childish and offensive.

BTW what was the name of that member who left because he couldn't put up with the homophobic ranting by some members of this forum?

He's a Mod!

Joke or not in my opinion it's unacceptable for anyone to make comments like that on a public forum but for a moderator to do it when it's clearly against forum rules is just disgusting. I hope the Admin team will be having words with ffelan about this as I'm sure it's not the image they wish to represent to the public.

grow up eddy / rich

its a bulletin board - my comments were not directed at any individual and were made is jest.

just as jimmys and geoffs were... and countless others before.

Do you not understand that comments like that even when not aimed at anybody are offensive just like racist comments that I've also seen on this forum?

I think it's you that needs to grow up.

as for the traction arguement... if you cant control wheelspin with your foot you obviously require more lessons...:P

It doesn't really matter whether its the traction control limiting the power (or I guess more correctly the torque) or the finesse of your right foot, the result is the same, not all of the potential is being transferred to the road. Any engine potential over that which the tyres can transmit is wasted until the use of higher gears lowers the torque to a level that the tyres can handle. More lessons on physics needed it would seem. :P back at you.

Eddy - Does your missus know you're gay?

Erm nope, more physics lessons not required.

It *does* matter whether it is traction control or your right foot, IMHO, as the electronic traction control on Octavias is fairly intrusive, once it kicks in. The idea of cutting your control of throttle is not a good one, whereas recognising that there are potentially traction control inducing conditions and driving within them are a much better way forward, as is actually being able to control your vehicle.

Seems that being able to drive without a safety net is a dying art, welcome to the nanny state. :(

As for the homophobic comments, well, they don't bother me either way, they were made in jest and should be taken as such, IMHO. Before people have a go at me for that comment, I'd just like to point out that if there was any malice in those comments the mods would have modified/deleted them, if Paul had even made them in the first place with malicious intent. Anyway, if you wish to continue that arguement, please do it in another thread, NOT this one as this is supposed to be a sensible thread on a serious topic.

So ffelan's 1st post and 2nd post in this thread were sensible replies on a serious topic. That's why the people that picked him up on it are getting slapped wrists and nothing has been directed at him.

Keep up the good work.

I beg your pardon? I have only just found this thread and I've PMed Paul about it. Did I say they were sensible? Nope. I also said I didn't want it to continue and that was aimed at both sides, not just at those who picked him up on it.

That's fair enough if you've PM'd him, it's just I took your post as been directed only at those that had a problem with Paul's posts.

As for the original question, having driven both cars I personally prefer the 4x4 (in modded form), however if the car was to remain totally standard with not even a remap or change of brake pads then the vRS would get my vote.

Oh dear...getting a little out of hand isn't it.

Was going to slap a big padlock on this but not really what I want to do plus it gives Kev, a bad impression of the site.

Everyone chill out and back on subject please. :)

Anymore nonsense and I will lock the thread.

Apologises to Kev.......

....as way of guidance to a newbie some things NOT to ask ;)

1) which colour is better

2) Fabia or Octavia

3) Optimax or Ultimate petrol

4) RS or 4X4 (you know about this now)

:D

1) any colour you like... silver appears cleaner for longer.

2) Drive both and decide, is personal opinion (I actually prefer the Fabia for some tasks - the 1.4TDI)

3) Optimax is good but expensive, not tried Ultimate..

4) As I said in my first post in this thread.... "Drive both, see what you prefer"

Oh dear...getting a little out of hand isn't it.

 but funny though.....

1) which colour is better - Black obviously

2) Fabia or Octavia - Octavia Obviously

3) Optimax or Ultimate petrol - Optimax. Ultimate is poo.

4) RS or 4X4 (you know about this now) - RS Estate :D

It *does* matter whether it is traction control or your right foot, IMHO

OK, fair point. What I was trying to get across though is that there is only a finite amount of torque which can be put down through any given tyre. A good driver can keep an engine at the point where its producing just a small amount of wheelspin which is the most possible torque transmission/acceleration that is possible. On a wet roundabout from standstill for example this may only be 100hp. A 4x4 could (looking at it very simplistically) transmit twice this as it has twice the driven wheels. The result is the 4x4 will accelerate onto the roundabout without too much drama, the 2wd car will be accelerating at a slower rate whilst the driver dances on the pedals keeping it at the optimum point for acceleration.

I don't think there is any contest as to which car handles, stops, looks etc better, its the VRS for sure, but the 4x4 has key advantages in certain circumstances e.g. pulling out of a junction quicky.

I don't think there is any contest as to which car handles, stops, looks etc better, its just down to your preferences, I would go 4x4 every time

The answer is to try both and then choose what best suites you

So what are the VAG 1.8T vehicles with AWD that come with strong six speed gearboxes that can take a serious thrashing with lots of torque? A4 1.8T Quattro? If so which generation?

yes John it will, but is that not a torsen system not the haldex?

IIRC the torsen diff is used on all the high-performance VAG models (greater than 250hp - cos lets be honest less than that is not high performance unless kerb weight is under a ton....)

I believe so Paul. Always on the lookout for turbo motors that come with tough engines and gearboxes, saves so much hassle in making them fast.

Only "problem" is that these tend to be much heavier in fuel use... but I see from your impreza you are used to that :D
