Just got a letter through from the DVLA (bank of England) informing me that I've got a

DVLA does not use recorded mail for sending out your V5 IIRC so why should you?

Tell them you sent the bottom part off and it's their problem...assuming you didn't leave it attached ;)

It's not attached so I can't honestly remember but is it worth risking the fine doubling to

Indeed, I did that when I forgot ;) Just sent them a copy of the bill of sale and they went away.

Chap in work got his aswell...

Actually it kicked of a debate.

Do you have to have your tax disc visible?

Apparantly (so I'm infomred) it's not a pcplod offence to be untaxed, but the dvla fine you.

So if your untaxed your liable to a fine. If your stopped untaxed, it's the dvla not plod.

Or is there a catch all rule that you have to display your tax and the plod can do you for not displaying it, but not for not having it?

*confused*

I only ask as I could put it in the glove box then, just to be annoying.

Failing to display is an offence in its own right IIRC.

You're better off asking over on 5ive-o , but IIRC there's an offence of "failure to display" which would apply even if you have a valid tax disc, but (for example) it's fallen into the footwell where it can't be seen

I used to put my tax disc in front of the rear view mirror - clearly visible but not blocking any of my vision - got pulled by jobsworth pcplod - who said he could do me becuase it wasnt displayed in a proper manner ?? -- he didnt but I don't know wether that was because he couldnt or he couldnt be arsed

When I had my LHD jag a few years ago, I was stopped because I was displaying it on the wrong side of the car. I had it on the side where the passenger would sit in a lhd car. Thats where it stayed, I didnt want a round disk obstructing my vision.

In what circumstances do I have to display a tax disc?

Any

my dad applied for a v5 from the dvla for an old car he bought and wanted to restore.

11 years later he has the v5 document, the car still isn't finshed :rofl:

Ive been stopped three times before... on the same road no doubt for not displaying my tax disc.. on 2 separate cars... first time was my mate put a parking ticket recept in the holder over the disc and plod saw it whilst i was goin round a roundabout...

second time it had fallen off the screen..

3rd time it was 3 days overdue and plod stopped me "by chance" and i got done.... fine for 12.50 from the dvla

plod told me that its not a police fine.. they just enforce it and pass details on to dvla.

From the DVLA website:

As soon as you sell your vehicle you must notify DVLA of the exact date of sale/transfer. You should always keep a separate note of the buyer's name and address. The Registration Document/Certificate (and the accompanying guidance notes INS 160 applicable to V5C) explains what you and the buyer must do, please read these notes carefully.

Under the system of Continuous Registration, you will be liable for the vehicle until you have notified DVLA of the sale, scrap, export, or the police of the theft of your vehicle. Once you have informed DVLA, you will receive an acknowledgement letter, confirming the discharge of liability of your vehicle. If you do not receive an acknowledgement letter within four weeks please contact 0870 240 0010.

It's in your intrest to makes sure the DVLA know you don't own the car anymore.

As far as the DVLA are concerned you still posess the car. Which means if someone takes it out for a test drive from the dealer, and they get Gatso'd, guess where the speeding fine is going to be sent...
