Snow, Snow and more Snow! When is it going away?!

Featured Replies

I like snow in general but I happen to live in a col de sac sorry for the spelling! and my car has being stuck there for the last few days! It's impossible to get the car out as i've got over 2 foot of snow! My manager is not very happy with me for not going to work :( and hewant's me to get a taxi from Tatsfield to Redhill! This is going to cost me £25 each way! :'( I can't even get a train as it has to go up to Croydon and then I need tochange there for Redhill! Even if I do get my car out of my space, at the end of my road it goes round a sharp corner up hill! On top of all this my road tax has expired so not a good idea to risk driving it out anyway incase someone bumps into me. I don't get paid either for taking the last 3 days off due too snow, even though taxis refused to collect me. :'( I wish the council would get a snow mobile and clear all this snow away. Does anyone else have problems with snow?

I am visiting my mum on Saturday night and not only does she live in the Northeast (up a 650 ft hill) but also in a cul de sac emoticon-0101-sadsmile.gif Apparently the snow is about 1 metre deep and nobody has cleared the road as most of the residents are fairly elderly. Not sure if I will be able to snow plough my way to her house and she tells me that all the local main roads are blocked up with abandoned and parked cars emoticon-0101-sadsmile.gif

Although I have to say you should not be drving if you don't have any road tax.....sorry :(

Sorry to hear that Lady Elanore' :( I hope she'll be ok. I also live up a rediculous hill in Kent called Titsey road. Every year durring this weather the police close it off and the entrance from Westerham in Kent too. In January this year I drove from Redhill and tried to get home. The journey normally takes me 30 mins but as it started to snow and freeze it took me 8 hours to drive to Westerham! Only to be told by the police I was unable to get home! So I had to drive another 30 miles on the A21 to Cranbrook in Kent to stay with my brother. I didn't get out of my car until midnight!!! total time in car 9.5 hours!!!!!! :'(

There is about 2 foot of it in some places here! mainly where the cars are parked. Bloody snow, I wish it would melt and never come back!

I agree, I hate the stuff and my car has vanished beneath it.

Sounds like we're lucky down here - only 7 inches, and the main roads sort of cleared. But even then I would not want to be going on any long drives. Even here it is a whole exercise in "finger crossing" just to get parked at the kerb between two other cars.

Having said that, the car is pretty good for 2 wheel drive and I haven't yet had any rally cross moments! Also it warms up and demists/de-ices very quickly.

What amazes me is the number of cars going by with hardly any de-icing attempted. Just the driver peering out of a tiny scraped patch on the front screen - lazy s*ds.

Also illegal - Highway Code says 'Windscreens and windows must be kept clean and clear of all obstructions.'; Construction and Use Regulations say 'All glass or other transparent material shall be maintained in such condition that it does not obscure the vision of the driver.'

What really annoys me is people who leave snow on their roofs/boot/bonnet. They seem to think it is funny driving on the motorway at 80mph throwing the equivalent of paving stones at my car!!! A few years ago one hit my car and broke not only mywindscreen wiper arms, but also broke my windscreen. Needless to say the Discovery driver drove off quite happily. I am sure this is a bigger problem in the last couple of years too, perhaps it’s because many newer drivers weren’t driving when we used to get winters like this and so don’t consider the impact of their negligence, or it could be they are just cretins.

Post shortened and fixed :-)

Sorry to hear about the busted windscreen etc though, bet that was a touch scary

Personally, I blame global warming - it ain't happening!

About 10 years ago the "EXPERTS" told us we'd have a climate like the south of France. I can only imagine they've never been there.

Mind you, in 1974 they were pushing scare stories that we were heading into a new ice age. Looks like that lot got it right!!

I think the scary part is, it takes a few seconds to register exactly what is going on and what action to take next.

I have the same problem as I live at the end of a cul de sac too, and I have a dodgy back which isn't liking all the shoveling too much!

I have been really impressed with everyone in the road though. Last year we let the snow compact and freeze, which made it a nightmare for months. This year everyone has cleared their patch immediately, so the snow isn't building up along the road.

I think I've spoken to more neighbours in the last few days while shovelling than all year

I agree with you. However when I clear my whole windscreen, it freezes up again as soon as I drive off! I have to leave the heating off until the engine has warmed up. I put the air on full blast and it froze inside aswell as outside the screen! I couldn't see a thing!

Or most likely they don't care! :(

statistically we've not left the last ice age yet. All thats happening with global "warming" is that we wills tart to experience a climate of other areas at the same latitude as us, ie Newfoundland, Parts of central Asia becuase the gulf stream/north atlantic drift will start to fail

My mate lives up in Consett and its really bad so make sure u go carefull B)

We spent 2,5hrs digging out our drive today, that was 3 of us going at it.

You then run out of room to put all the shoveled snow  it was a foot deep in most places.

Thanks. Been struggling up there for more years than I can remember. Still when I young we had the best sledging :D (it's very hilly around there)

I hope it's better by next weekend - I am supposed to be driving down the east coast from Edinburgh to Middlesbrough.
