Featured Replies

Had hids and led sidelights fitted yesterday, what a difference! There is just no comparison between hids and halogens.

To be honest with you, i dont know !! :wonder: Hauptmann fitted it all, as he has done quite a few and luckily he lives only 10 mins away, but i must say if you can afford it, have it done.

4300K 35W non-CANbus with Controller 9 recoded for HID - i.e. basically the 'factory fitted look'.

The LED sidelights are the 'whitest' ones that I have found. Got them from an automotive wholesaler, so not sure who retails them. Most LED sidelights tend to have a blue tint to them, but these are genuinely white and match the 4300K HID's quite nicely - I have also put them on my own car. They are supposed to be CANbus-friendly, but I turn the Cold Diagnostics off on parking lights anyway since a lot of the CANbus ones tend to put a warning light on sooner or later, and/or flicker when you first switch them on (due to the Cold Diagnostics polling).

One thing that crossed my mind, if you have controller 9 recoded then one of the xenon bulbs goes pop, would you be able to put a halogen back in for the interim with that coding or would it cause problems?

Yes, you can put a halogen back in and it will work. Coding for HID's turns off the CANbus filament polling (bulb-out warning systems) and sets the current threshold detection at 35W (3A) rather than 55W (4.5A). So halogen will work OK if coded for HID, but HID will not work if coded for halogen. Ideally, of course, you should set the coding for the llight source you're using.

Thats excellent info, out of interest what about if you fit the 50w HID's?

I don't know because I've never fitted 50W units. The controller is designed for a 35W HID unit, so that is what I've always fitted and never had a problem.....

Very impressive, especially the side lights. Now the you can see properly, get your snow shovel out! :giggle:

 really like them. i have factory fit xenons so could i just fit LED sidelights or does this cause probs?

Liking the LED sidelights.

Got a set here waiting to go in along with some Osram Nightbreaker H7's. Just too damn cold to be messing around outside with the car at the moment :o

It only takes a couple of mintues to remove the headlamps, then you can fit the bulbs in the comfort of your own living room.

Er, no. I am advised that 'playing around' with the car is definately restricted to the outdoors...

Furry muff! In that case start the car leave for 10 minutes to get warm, remove headlamps then enter warm vehicle and avoid swmbo's wrath.

Well finally got round to doing the job (outside!) this morning....

Needless to say the removal of the light units wasn't quite as straightforward as the user manual suggests! Maybe I'm just inept, but one of the release lever's refused to budge and the connectors are a PITA to detach until you realise how the latch works...(thanks to the tech guide posted by Andy2407 which I resorted to reading part way through the job!).

And after all that...the LED sidelights don't work (yes they are supposed to be CANBUS one's). So the filament sidelight bulbs are back in, but at least I have got the Osram Nightbreaker H7's installed - just off to test their effectiveness B)

Did you turn them round as some only work ONE WAY!!!!!!

Yep...tried both ways, pushed all the way into the holder or just part way, wiped contacts on holder and LED etc etc!

Just a heads up for people, if you want white led sidelights, don't order these!

As fitted in mine today they look like this -

Even though they state 6000k Ice White!!!!

I replied to your PM Pagey.

As a general 'heads up' to owners I have to say that nearly all the 'white' LED's I have tried (about 12 different types) are all blue to some extent or other. I think it is because genuinely 'white' LEDs are much more expensive than the pale blue ones and the Chinese manufacturers want to use the cheapest parts.

I can source some genuinely 'white' LEDs (the type I supplied on Studmuffins car, above) from a trade wholesaler - but they are rather more expensive (around £12.50 inc post). I have not yet seen these on Ebay, or anywhere else for that matter.

If there is any widespread interest I can probably order a few sets to sell on to people - although it may take a couple of weeks to get them out. They are 'CANfriendly', but ideally I always recommend a recode with VCDS.

PM returned. Perhaps a group buy?

I'd be game for group buy

OK. I am not really keen to organise a formal group buy as such, but I have now e-mailed the company asking for pricing on 10 and what their price break-points would be. Bear in mind they are not a retailer and generally sell to the trade (factors etc) in quantities of at least 100+ items - so a few 10's may not really be in the frame for much of a discount, if any. Anyway, I probably need 5 sets for my own use, so I will sell the rest on to anyone that wants them.

I would be interested...
