A dreadful sight for me today

Featured Replies

Before you start laughing at me, I;m sorry, but I do get a bit attached to my cars., nowt wrong with that if they bring you pleasure enjoyment and memories.

I bought one of the very first Citroen Picasso's back in the month they were released, June 2000.

2.0 Hdi SX with built in sat nav.

Took me and my then young family all over GB and over to France. Totally reliable and a pleasure to own.

Sold it 3 years late, and never saw it again, until today.

Today I had to go to a scrap yard, and there it was, lying on top of another car, ripped apart.

I'm not ashamed to say that I felt absolutely gutted and walked straight out.

I know, it's only a lump of metal, and they all end up this way, but all the same, it was a truly horrible sight, especially when I look at some of my pictures of the kids sitting in it. when I first got it.

i'll try not to laugh too much but it was french on the otherhand, glad to see you now have a proper motor. :giggle:

did you get what you wanted from the scrap yard?

Last year I saw my old N reg Felly GLX at a Ford dealer stickered up for the scrappage scheme..Wasnt happy, but what can you do eh?

That must have been really sad to see your faithful little car all helpless and broken emoticon-0106-crying.gif

I can't get emotional with my cars or bikes as they are just metal things.

I know exactly what you mean, you become attached to certain cars.

I remember the day i sold my first car, a 1982 Mini City. TBH it was a wreck, but i had spent so many hours with it tinkering, fitting new chrome and bucket seats etc.

Watching it drive off i was almost in tears!

Judging by most of the (expected) comments so far apart from yours, I think there must be a bit of girliness in me tbh, as i was actually very sad when I saw it.

Totally unexpected and shocked to see it in such a state. I mean, what are the actual chances of seeing an old faithful friend in such circumstances? Virtually zero I'd have thought.

Before someone sarcastically says "get over it'", I will.

Irrelevant.

I've had many Citroens and a couple of Peugeots, and apart from one, they've all been generally spot on.

And no, I didn't get what I wanted from the scrappy either. As I said, I was too choked off to be bothered looking for the bits I required and walked straight out.

Must be a 'girlie ' thing', I dunno.

Still got my 23 year old 42k Citroen AX anyway, so they can't be that bad.

Some years ago I p/x a Vauxhall Belmont as there were lots of problems with the electrics and brakes, and it was starting to go rusty big time underneath at about 8 years old. I was convinced it was unlikely to pass its next mot and had 100k on the clock. This was my wifes car that she had used for over 5 years after I picked it up at auction with 75k omn the clock.

What galled me is that I continued to see the car for about another 10 years. always driven by the same person until a couple of years ago, so it can't have been as near demise as I thought and in the meantime I had replaced the car that i replaced it with originally due to reliability issues with that one!

I would rather have come across this one at the scrappers than keep seeing it still on the road.

I know the feeling. Many moons ago I saw a recovery truck with my recently sold Mk1 escort mexico on the back - obviously barrel rolled and fit for the scrapyard

at the end of the day, a car is a machine which has no feelings... but it is kinda sad to see your old motors in the wreckers yard... although i once saw an old renault i owned being crushed into a cube which was the most satisfying thing i've ever witnessed

I check the DVLA enquiries thing to see which of my old cars are still running.

My first car dropped off the radar in 2001 (1989) and my second in 2005 (1997). The others are still running.

My first Scooby was written off within a couple of months of selling it and both occupants of the car were killed in a tree versus car accident: The man that bought it was an amateur rally driver apparently

My first Fabia went upside-down about a year after I sold it :(

The guy gave me a wingmirror as a souvenir though!

Seen a few of my old cars chugging around all happy and that. Did see my old Frontera abandoned at the side of the A20 near Sidcup a few years ago. Called the Met Police and Kent Police to report it, never heard anything back from either.

My old Fabia is still on the road, no idea how much the owner has spent on getting the engine right as I was quoted £800 to fix the piston rings

Just done a quick ask mid check on my cars that I have owned in the past.

First two cars (Nissan Micra's are still on the road)

My focus and my Fabia vRS are not on the database today and my last car is on the database.

Have never seen any of my cars since I sold them.

I don't think you're 'a big girl', I know what you mean by this, think there's something subconscious that goes

on here.

As you say, many memories associated with that car and times spent with family, times you'll never get back.

Perhaps, subconsciously, it is these times you see on the scrap heap. But for the memories, gone forever.

Thanks for that and your understanding. I think you've actually hit the nail on the head tbh.

It's mainly the memories and happy times that that car actually provided for me and my family that caused me to feel so absolutely gutted I think.

I stood there very briefly, probably with my mouth open in horror, looking at the number plate on the half open tailgate, and then glanced down to the still attached tow bar, quickly and vividly remembering the trauma and laughs we all had fitting all the push bikes onto it before our holiday trip to France.

Hate this going down memory lane thing, but unavaidable on this occassion.

I had a similar occurrence a few years back. Was wandering around a scrappy with a mate looking for some bits for his motor when I spotted my Dad's old Senator up on top of a pile of cars. Was gutted as I loved that car! It wasn't top spec, just the 2.5 straight six and it wasn't even that fast but it was big and comfy. Also I felt safe in it since I'd just written my mums Polo off so my confidence had taken a bit of a knock! Bombed about in that for a couple of months and became quite attached to it before it was sold. Don't know what killed it in the end but it was somewhere around 140k miles when my Dad got rid so it was probably worn out after another 4 or 5 years of driving.

Now that IS funny!!!

I'd have been more suprised it made it to the scrape yard and the scrappy man took it.

Most people take them in a bucket cos they've rusted that much emoticon-0144-nod.gif

Most strange as i haven't seen a rust ridden one yet tbh. :wonder:

Most cars of today are only scrapped due to expensive replacement parts that end up costing more than most 10 year old cars are actually worth.

Probably ecu, heater matrix, or headlight bulb repalcement.

Rust is no longer the car killer that we had back in the 60's -90's

The Xantia I had a couple of years ago needed a rear tailgate due to a little 'mishap' that was my fault.

The donor car was the same age as mine,(8) and was scrapped simply because the heater matrix had burst, and was going to cost in the region pf £700 to replace (supplied and fitted) according to the owner of the scrap yard.

Dreadful waste, but that's the price of parts for you.

Manufacturers are doing this deliberately I reckon, to keep the flow of new cars moving.

My first car I sold in the summer of last year and I'll be the first to admit that I miss it, especially when it was snowing round here. I had so much fun in that car, took it anywhere (off road etc) and enjoyed it so much more because it wasn't worth a great deal of money. I'm sort of scared to contact the guy who I sold it too as I wouldn't be surprised if it's been scrapped now. My second car I only had for a month before it met a timely end involving a very fast stop, car saved my life and it was hard to take parts off it and see it there knowing it wasn't able to be fixed. Still got the numberplate in my room. My Lupo is my third car, while it doesn't share a bond as strong as my first or second, I'd still be paranoid when the time comes to let it move on as tbh it's a really tidy car, been looked after and like all my previous cars never let me down (all vw). I do fancy a black magic Fabia VRS next and this is one for me locally up for sale, but I'm unsure about it and wouldn't want to risk loosing a good car in a bit of a gamble to get it.
