Have you got a boost surge after a re-map?

Featured Replies

Ben,

When i was having problems uploading your map to my car with the sts because revo still had some of there codes in my ecu. I went down to my revo dealer who denied this at first he was adiment that there was no trial codes left on the ecu. I payed him 25 pound to upload a standard flash code or something (excuse my lack of knowledge on this) he guarenteed me that this flash code returned my ecu to completly standard format as it came out of the factory.

Is there anything else that i could get the revo dealer up here to do?

Wish i could pop down and you could look over the car would be so much easier but as i am 400 miles away its not as easy as that.

  • I've had several different maps on my many VAG 1.8T's & the only 2 that didn't surge were Revo, & ECU-Evolution. A note of interest is that when I had my mkiv Anniversary Revo'd it did surge s

Not for the last 2-3 years no :)

ah right, I thought he was one of the main guys there? not knocking him or you though! just inquisitive :)

ouch Paul, most remainder wouldve done that for free!

perhaps you could send your ecu to ben? he may have more access to it on the bench to put another map on?

obviously you will need to do without your car for a few days!

Hi all, I am reading this post with intrest as my vrs does the same, I had a map put on mine about 4 years ago it has always surged a little bit but in the last year it has got quite bad to the point of getting annoying, cant remember who done the map. My car has a powertec filter, blue flame exhaust and a forge 007 dump valve. But it has 256.000 miles on the clock, still runs sweet though. As the surging has got worse it is very obvious that the wastegate is opening, if you watch the boost guage it goes up and down like a rev counter, the car is jerky to drive a slow speed, but if you drive fast/high revs it settles down. Doubt if this info helps anybody but thats my story of surge issues.

Sorry for no update on my part, working a lot at the moment and just do not have the time. May have found a fault which could be linked to this problem will update when I have had a test drive tomorrow after work.

Looking forward to it.

Is it something ben found, or something you found?

Mikko does come on here regularly but it's more down to me to look after the forum stuff

We're working on it right now and going through the process of elimination as to what it could be. We have two or three theories but of course need an affected car to test this on.

Not bad for 23:00 on a Friday night eh :)

Hi Ben,

Cheers for all the updates. I went for your map because your customer service is so great, and this is just more evidemnce to support that.

If you need a car to try out some map alterations on, that is suffering from boost surge, then I will volunteer myself! I don't have an STS unit, but I'm only 50 miles away so no biggy.

Now that's interesting, as you have different software Bodge. Absolutely says to me that it's not the map, of course it might be something that we can work around in mapping as soon as we find out what it is.

Well I need to clean the TB pronto to rule that out first, then work from there. But from what others have said, it's probably not the culprit.

I've just driven back from Paris to Yorkshire, so I've found out when and where the "surge" occurs!

First off, I lied! It's not at WOT. It appears to happen when under peak load/boost/torque. I can drive it up to about 15psi and it's perfectly smooth and constant, but when I try and push the car on hard the boost hits about 19psi then fluctuates between about 17 and 21psi. So 90% of the time when I'm cruising around, I don't even notice the issue. But when I welly it for an overtake it's annoying as hell as the boost just pulses back and forth.

When I first got the map it would peak at 19psi and be pretty solid. The problem then became intermittant. Sometimes it would pulse when I wasn't looking at the gauge, then when I'd try it again and watch the gauge it would be fine! Cleaning the DV and changing the spring seemed to make it go away for a while, but it soon came back, and now it's worse than ever as it always does it.

It feels like it's the wastegate valve that's lifting off it's seat, but obviously can't be sure.

Hopefully this description helps your investigation Ben, and if you need a test dummy just let me know!

P.S. My consumption is still great, as I managed 38mpg on the way to Paris, and 36mpg on the way back.

Ummm...

any fault codes etc?

Get the car scanned for fault codes first mate.

What map have you got?

My issue is that my car will pull very well from a stanstill or second gear no surgeing at all. But say when i overtake in 4th or 5th gear you car hear the turbo easing of then back on agin this carrys on pretty much round the rev range only in 4th and 5th though.

the car is under more load in 4th and 5th so the car will be working harder as well

Hi guys,

I was wondering, is the surging you are talking about similar to what I have detailed below or is it lots of plusing you can feel:

1. Press accelerator pedal most of the way down or WOT - car accelerates well.

2. Hit around 3400rpm and acceleration dies off - turbo goes quiet (or quieter as it is pretty quiet anyway!)

3. Car picks up acceleration and pulls well.

4. Car hits around 4800rpm and acceleration dies off - turbo goes quiet

5. Car picks up again and you go towards 6000rpm - then you change gear or run out of road!

is yours remapped?

My car is working fine. I was just wondering if those were the symptoms.

There must be something wrong as you wouldn't just make up this?????

LOL

I had a problem but got it sorted (car that is, not drinking!)

What did you do to fix it?

Ummm...

I've spent a fair bit of time googling this today, and it appears that it's a fairly common issue on the 1.8T.

Looks like the culprits could be N75 or MAF, in terms of hardware. But I'm not getting any error codes for them, so I'd rather not blow the cash replacing them! Both the N75 and MAF are the originals though (9yrs old, 122k miles).

Here's a thread from Vortex: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5081900-1.8T-odd-boosting-when-accelerating-(pulsing)

I definately have no vacuum leaks, and the N249 is only a couple of years old. The Forge DV is also in good working condition, so I can't see it being a leakage or DV control issue.

Feels like the N75 is spazzing out, but the big question is why......

where are you based bodge? Might be worth trying another members MAF and N75 to see if it makes a difference.

My feeling still is that if you got a proper logging session on a rolling road they would quickly identify any issues (as long as they know what they are doing).

This is turning in to an epic thread!

I did a lot of research myself looking through ukmivs, tt owners and cupra owners clubs and it seems to be quite a common issue and not only with map'd cars. I have done the N75 and MAF replacement.

I posted ealier that I had found a problem, I found a very slight oil leak when I removed one of the coil packs. It turned out to be the rocker / cam cover gasket. The centre one to be precise. I have replaced this and its fine now. I cant see this actually being the issue now I have thought about it as I know it was fine when I had the car initially mapped as it went for a check up not long after and I had had the coil packs out since the second visit to shark.

As well as replacing the gasket for good measure I also fitted the NGK spark plugs recommended in the other post but it has not made any difference unfortunately. I left it for a day to allow the car to adjust but 200 miles late its the same.

I have pretty much elimated every recommended part and I am no better off  except for the knowlege my car has pretty much a new engine and everything attached to it!

higgy, I had the same issue with a map from a similar company and since I've had a DNA map from ChipMyCar I hull it's been fine!

ollieh stop changing parts lol it will cost you £££ and wont solve the problem

you need ben to sort the issue out as it will software related in his map simple as that

  • 2 weeks later...

Any updates on this??

Seems to have gone very quiet!

I've cleaned the TB properly with it open, put a new air filter in, and put new OE plugs in. I've not driven the car yet, so I'll report back on Saturday.
