Air condtioning problem

Featured Replies

Any help out there. I have an 55 plate Octavia. The air-con stopped working about 6 months ago and I assumed it was the compressor. I had the car MOT'd a couple of weeks ago and asked them to look at the air-con. They regassed the system said there was no leaks and the compressor was fine. It worked great for about 2 weeks now it back to warm air again and manual air-con (windows open!)

What system do you have? Dual Zone or Climatic? If Dual Zone (Climatronic) have you tried resetting the vent flaps by turning ign on to position 2 and pressing and holding the Econ and Recirc buttons at the same time? This makes the flaps do a system reset and you can hear them whirring away for a few minutes. Worth a shot if you can.

ive got the exact same problem, ive just tried re-aligning the flaps (with vcds)couldn't get other method to work? but to no avail.

Ive got an a/c specialist having a look tommorow, i'll post the outcome!

Check your fans are working correctly now you've got the compressor replaced!! Both fans should work, and both have two speeds (though you shouldnt see the high speed kicking in very often). If your compressor gets too hot (and the pressure reaches 15bar you could damage your lovely new compressor).

One of my fans works on high speed and the other doesnt work at all (so I am replacing the small one infront of my new compressor this weekend). £152 inc VAT for genuine part, around £100 for an alternative-though they are difficult to source!

Just a general question to anyone who's watching really:

Are the A/C compressors for the different Octy models wildly different? As I've seen prices for them go from £248 to £480 and beyond.

I went for a Sanden as they are a reputable manufacturer, and fitted in more recent VAG vehicles, replacing Zelex/Valeo that were prone to failure. Denso were also mentioned as the alternative by the A/C specialist I went to (he only did automotive A/C work, nothing else like tyres or exhausts etc).

Not sure if they differ from model to model as I just got one that was the part number listed for my VIN-just ensuring it was a Sanden and nothing else.

Will a Skoda warranty replacement be for the Sanden system, or do they still supply the older one? There are apparently no VAG ones in the country so I am having to wait until next Monday to have one shipped to the dealer.

Slightly concerned about the fan comment, but assume this is quite rare rather than common following compressor replacement. I have one month left on my warranty so fingers crossed this solves my problem.

Skoda would either supply a Sanden or Denso for my 1.9TDi 105 PD Elegance (according to ETOS parts). The Zelex isnt available (marked 'old part') for my model.

As for the fan, I mention this as mine needed replacing. I only found out after I got the A/C working again-when the compressor fails it shuts the whole system down and the fans wont work at all so I never knew. Once you have the A/C working and its back from Skoda just turn the A/C to LO and leave it sat in idle for a few mins and both fans should kick in. Only one of mine did (working at high speed to compensate for the other not working).

Appreciate the reply - just one question: How do I know if both fans are working or only one? Is there a tell tale sign?

Start your engine (run at idle) set the A/C to its lowest setting, set the fans to blow through the interior vents, lift the bonnet and look behind the radiator. There are two fans, after a couple of mins they should spin up (though they wont if your compressor inst fixed yet).

You are a scholar and a gent B)

Thanks

New air con compressor replacement delayed by at least a week as still no parts in the country :'(

Are these in demand, is this issue more common across the VAG range than we realise?!

What fan is meant to run when the air con is turned on the large or small??

Where is the pump situated, and has anyone ever done a repair as it could be a cooling switch like that fitted to the cooling system to turn the fan on or off

I just had my air con regassed as well by an Independent 3 weeks ago, It was supposed to be a full air con service.

Went to use on Sunday and the passenger side vents are blowing hot air and driver side vents are blowing cool air!

I'm presuming I've got a slow leak even though they must have checked for one!

Hope no one has problems with the air con compressor like me, there are none in the country and on back order for the entire VAG group :'(

My AC started blowing like an asthmatic, followed by belt squeal and burning rubber smell followed by Battery light on dash.

Verdict: My Compressor clutch just seized. Does anyone have the Compressor (also described as pump) Part No. for 06 VRs ?

Thankss

Just got back from the dealership, wish I has seen this sooner otherwise could have got part number. Genuine Skoda replacement part is £900!!! They actually showed me all the info on screen. Unbelievable. Since my fault they have now had another customer go on back order for the compressor. No ETA, could be weeks :'(

I got my Sanden part (the ones the dealers will be using for £350 inc fitting from an independant auto a/c specialist) and only got it a couple of weeks ago-so they are in the country and supply is obviously fine through motorfactors.

Try an independant!!

Problem is my car is still under warranty - for another 3 weeks at least. Sourcing elsewhere will mean that I will need to pay for the part. They had given me this option but that's what I have a warranty for. My local dealer has now got another on back order, eta could be over 4 weeks :'( Skoda have acknowledged that there is a supply problem affecting the VAG group, it seem sthe channel that they have to source them through cannot get any stock from the factory. They are not sure of the reason why.

Seems that this is serious problem for early MKII's, the lack of stock is bad to say the least. I think the aircon compressor and the ESP failure issue must be the achillies heal of MKII Octavias

I also have an air con problem. When you turn a/c on you can hear a faint screetch/whistling noise through vents. My fans don't spin either and skoda think I need a pump, condenser and pressure switch, all mine for just 1152 pounds! No thank you!

My friend who works at VW thinks it's just the compressor, where's cheapest place to get one?

Apparently Skoda will always replace the condenser/drier unit and the pressure switch at the same time as the compressor. The A/C specialist I went to said that any swarf would get caught up in the drier and could be back flushed to save that part and said a new pressure switch if I needed it would be another £30 (but this wasnt replaced and was taken from my broken compressor).

He did say that due to the type of failure of my compressor and 'something else' he had to do the old fashioned draining of the system (numerous times) to ensure it was all clean before he could regas and send me on my way.

New compressors can be obtained off the internet easy enough-but I just got the specialist to get me the one he fitted. All in it was £350 to fix the A/C and i've just been to GSF and spent £100 on a new fan (the smaller 295mm one, infront of the compressor) to save the new compressor overheating.

Seems to be lots of aircon problem around right now. Hope you managed to get it all sorted swiftly and for a reasonable amount. No update on my new compressor yet

Let us know what Skoda do/replace under warranty (when they eventually get the parts). The seem to want to do everything when it comes out your own pocket
