Thinking of purchasing Octavia

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

My company car is due to go back in September, we lease them for 3 years at a time.

I presently have a Mazda 6 2.0 Turbo Diesel, the car flies, has so much power behind it and handles/grips the road superbly.

Unfortunately, out of 1300 cars/models available, the Mazda 6 2.0 Turbo Diesel isn't available this time around.

Also, i have a young family and 2 x dogs, and therefore looking for a good sized family car and looking at estate models.

I have an Insignia estate coming tomorrow for a 3 day demo, however they only one available on my list is the 1.8, which according to Auto Express has barely enough power to pull itself along and struggles on hills.....

Therefore, i'm looking seriously at the Octavia Estate 1.8 TSI Elegance, with the 160BHP and 0-60 in 7.9 seconds, this car seems to good to be true?

Anybody on here have one? I've got the hatchback 1.8 TSI Elegance coming next week for a 3 day demo, really looking forward to it.

I can't believe for one i've been visiting Skoda showrooms, and for two i'm thinking of getting one! Either i'm getting old or they have come a long way over the last few years, as they ones i've seen in the showrooms seem quality machines with all the gadgets and bells/whistles.....

Is the 1.8 TSI really that quick? How can the estate be 7.9 seconds 0-60 whereas the Honda Civic 1.8 SI does 0-60 in 8.9 seconds? It doesn't seem possible?

Hi, welcome to the forum, they certainly have come a long way, prefer mine to the Lexus I had before

lol @ lol - how has he missed this?

Can't you get diesels or is the 1.8tsi the only choice? Also can you not get the VRS?

One thing is for sure, the build quality and interior plastics blow Mazda out of the water. As for the 1.8 Insignia i here nothing but bad things about the lack of power and appauling fuel consumption.

Depends how many miles you do a year and if your fuel is paid! You will be looking at high 30's low 40's for the tsi and easy 50's on the 140CR diesel and 45-50 on the 170CR diesel

Pretty much can't go wrong with any engine in the range. I used to drive a 2.0 Mazda 6 at my old work and it was like a kinder egg inside and also gutless!

I had a 1.8 insignia saloon for a hire car 9 months ago, and thought it was broken. Absolutely gutless, as auto express said - doesnt have enough power to pull itself along. Steer well clear.

I have the 2.0tsi, which uses the same basic engine, and is fantastic. Ive also read many good reports about the 1.8 tsi, and yes the performance figures are for real.

Lets face it youre going to get a VAG group car, with Audi / VW tech and finishes.

Dont be put off by the badge, I thought that image had been shed a few years back.

Try it, I bet you'll be impressed.

I've not even ran my CR in yet & it flies. I cant get over how well it hugs the corners/roundabouts. If you had a nippy car before you'll be no worse off with the Octavia. B)

I took what I thought was one of our faster company pool cars out for a journey this week & it seems so weak comapred to the vRS i'm getting so used to. :giggle: Space wont be an issue the back end is like a cave !

Have a chat with a dealer & see if they can do you a loaner for the weekend. Just bear in mind the wait for a CR is quite long unless you can find one in the country (like a cancelled order), September is cutting it fine. Mine took 5 months, ordered it at Xmas.

Good luck & happy hunting

This is my first Skoda too, and I bloody love it!

Performance, space, quality, equipment, mileage, value for money, BIK - they really are in a league of their own IMO. Some cars can trump it in specific areas but across the board nothing comes close.

Very happy with my choice (and i did LOTS of research) plus I'm already thinking ahead to next year when I order my replacement, yes, its going to be another octavia for me.

hth.

I'm on my third vrs and don't think for the money it can be beaten for combination of quality, performance and practicality.

Welcome to the forum. In answer to your question about the Honda - Honda do not use turbos in their petrol cars, whereas the Octavia you are looking at has one. That's pretty much it tbh.

worth noting that on the whole the Mazda 6 is a bigger car than the octavia, however our suits family life perfectly B)

Get the Octavia, you won't regret it.

I used to have a Bmw 3 series and the Octavia is faster, more practical, roomier, better built and the equipment levels are good. Then there is the price, nothing comes close to it.

I'm on my 4th Skoda.... Amazing cars.

Welcome to Briskoda.

I doubt very much if you will be disappointed with the Octavia, as yes they have come a very long way!

I jumped ship from BMW to Skoda 6 1/2 years ago after many of their 3 series (including the E30 M3), this is my 3rd Skoda in a row (Octavia MKI, Superb MKI and now a Superb MKII estate).

The only thing IMO that lets the Octavia down is the rear legroom (the mahoosive boot robs the rear passengers of a bit of their comfort) if the rear legroom is not an issue due to very young kids then it will be ideal, if however you find it a bit cramped in the back then take look at the Superb and you will be amazed at the rear legroom! this was the reason I went from an Octavia to a Superb.

Are you basing that on the Mk1? I've not noticed that at all, nor have any passengers, unless you're freakishly tall ofc.

It (apparently) has slightly more leg room than the equivalent Golf.

Obv compared to the Superb it's not quite there!

Currently on my 2nd Skoda. Had a Honda before and it was great, but for value the Skoda wins hands down.

My Fabia VRS wasn't well looked after but was still nice to drive and pretty nippy, part of me had wished I had bought one a few years earlier, but that's another story.

Upgraded to a 2007 Octavia estate at the beginning of the year as my sons buggy wouldn't go in the back of the Fabia without taking the parcel shelf out. I have the elegance model and it has plenty of toys, it wasn't anywhere near as expensive as its competitors and I really like driving it even if it only has 105 horses

I shall be buying a third when I decide to get rid and either go for the greenline Octavia or the Superb as I'm sure the leg room will be an issue at some point, but not for a few years as my son is only 1

Limo proportions of rear legroom compared to my Bora (which was less legroom than the mk4 golf)

The MKI was I admit pretty poor for rear legroom (for a car of it's size), I have only sat in a MKII in a showroom and with the front seat set for me (a 5'8" short arse) the rear was better than the MKI but still cramped IMO.

SWMBO has a MK5 Golf and I certainly would not want to do a long journey in the rear!

It's true that it's not fair to compare it to a Superb as there is no comparison with just about anything on the market, the Superb has more rear legroom than anything short of a limo! but it is worth bearing in mind if like me you find the rear legroom a bit cramped.

This has got me thinking, I'm 6ft 2 and mines a 2007 so will try and sit in the back now and tell you what the room is like. Be back in a mo :giggle:

to add my o2p to the two post above, yes its got more rear leg room that the golf i had before, but its not quite as much as a passat or superb. For me, that's perfect - two kids under 4 so i don't need the leg room but i DO need a big boot - the Octavia's 600 litre cavern beats EVERYTHING in its class including the passat.

if your kids are bigger/lanky teenagers then they'll be "ok" in the octavia but will have a lot more space in a superb. For me right now a superb would just be too big.

Here you go. There is enough room for me to sit there, but not really move around just let my legs drop like blokes do

I had the misfortune to be given one of these as a hire car to go to Belgium on a work trip. It looked the part in the carpark, badged SRi and with 18" wheels and a nav system. With only me, my colleague who is 65kg with breakfast and a couple of small cases I was expecting to fly along the motorway, within a mile I realised there was a problem! I think it had 105hp and over 600 miles of easy motorway it struggled to go over 30MPG, I have no idea why anyone would buy one, it's dire!

Edit to add, I had the hatch, I assume the estate would be even worse.

Probably the 1.8 petrol with 150bhp apparently :wonder:

It didn't feel like 150.

I remember getting my colleague to dig out the handbook to try and find the power, we were amazed how low it was. I'm sure it was only just over 100bhp.

But the official figures say 138bhp for the 1.8 in hatchback, so maybe I was mistaken.

Edited by Lou_O

Ah yes 138.....didn't think 150 was right when i was typing it.....We are all so used to turbo's and superchargers nowadays that any power N/A seems slow.

That's it.

My vRS has a bit more than 170, so it was always going to be a shock.
