Fabia mk1 looking its age?

Featured Replies

What do we think?

I know as owners we'll always thinks it looks "right"..

But the designs, what... 12 years old now?

Is the mk1 Fabia starting look like "an old car" on the road?

How's it aging against the early 9n based Polo, Ibiza and A2? I reckon the Ibiza has aged the best, but the Fabia the worse. Especially early classics. Don't get me wrong, I'm still one of the people who thinks it's quite a handsome design. But current it aint.

It's still ugly as sin, but I don't think it looks 'old'. Parked next to a Mk2 I still think it's better.

I passed a new vrs the other day and for the first time, thought the exact same thing.

Personally I think it still looks good, but the shell certainly ain't modern

I'd prefer projector headlights.

Smoothed front bumper - viewed from the side it looks a bit odd, as the number plate plastic thing sticks right out.

I actually quite like the look of the facelift Mk1 Fabia! Nicer than many other cars if you ask me. I must just be strange.

Rob do we think the MK4 "Ibiza has aged best" as it went on the longest??

The mk1 Fabia ended production in 07 while the Ibiza after it's 2 or 3 "facelifts" went on until 09?

Also as car design seems to have got more curvy and the Ibiza was more rounded to start with that might

There is no denying that early classics with their black plastic bump strips on all corners look seriously dated but I think the VRS has held up ok. Admittedly it's no Corza VXR or last gen Fiesta but i never cower away to be sick when I see mine.

That said though I don't think my mk2 Ibiza looks that dated! ;)

I'm not a fan of a lot of brand new cars out there, well looking at the supermini segment that is. The only ones I think have improved are the Corsa (dont like it though) and the Punto Evo (which I do quite like).

The Fabia has never looked good IMO, I think it has always looked "classic" and "understated", it never was a sporty, modern or ground breaking vehicle that stood out from the crowd. That said I think the new Fabia looks horrible, so I'm very happy with my face lifted Mk1 in comparison.

To be honest the only reasons I brought my Fabia was because it was practical, cheap to buy and supposedly had VW build quality and reliability. After owning my Fabia I'm not that impressed and I don't think I will ever buy another one, probably not even another Skoda or anything else from the VW group...

The new Fiesta doesn't look bad either, I wouldn't buy it though. But it is the best looking fiesta that there has ever been (yes unfortunately I'm old enough to have been around since before the mk1's).

I think the silver has aged the best as it makes the car look much bigger and richer IMO I still love the mean aggressive look of it :)

Mk1 never looked good, but the Mk2 is as ugly as your average munter in West Lothian. Same applies to a lot of new cars, dripping in cheap PLASTIC chrome, headlights designed by someone on drugs, crappy water based paint full of orange peel. The Superb is a class act though.

I actually like the styling etc of the vRS. Certainly looks better then the non vRS models. Its very understated but i do like it on the whole

I'm suprised at some of the replys. Everyone I talk to about them seems to agree they are looking pretty good for their age. MK6 fiesta? Corsa C? MK1 A3? All look worse for the years IMO, even the Clio is looking slightly dated now, ESP the pre facelift with the round headlights.

I have to agree with a few comments...I like mine (early MKI) but would like to add the front bumper from a face lift version......but not the rear lights...I still think my early rear lights look more expensive and better than the facelift version! Mind you I have been spoilt as I bought an Elegance with a dark metallic blue paint and the "tan" interior...so the best colour combo ever!! Very Audi!!.....But I would say that wouldn't I!!

Don't like the design of the current Fabia that much but think the interior of the current Polo is the best and the current Ibiza is very good for the outside design.....with the Polo pretty good all round!!!! B)

Think the base models look pretty tired these days (but then the base models of most cars tend to look pretty terrible) - I still like the Sport, Elegance and vRS models (the vRS is ugly but in a good way - it's the supermini it's all right for a bloke to be seen in).

The mk1 VRS looks like nothing else.

It may not be attractive, but I like something a bit different.

All I want it to do is leave more snazzy cars behind.....

+1

I love the fact that it's completely understated, and its underwhelming looks still surprise people ;)

mk2 fabia looks horrific. really sack the guy who designed it! the mk1 as stated isnt the nicest car around but i still think with the right touches it looks good.

mk1 - Hmm.. meh, not really attractive, nor unattractive looking, fairly safe styling. At the same time, I suppose it wont

age as quickly as other cars perhaps. Headlights are dated though, it felt dated very very quickly.

mk2 looks worse, the concept convertible is a bit interesting though.. not sure if i like it.

Body styled by Bertone, and designed before any VW involvement.

Any takers?

Take a look at Skoda's vision for the future...

Replies to make me ponder...

Thing is, the details give it away.. The window frams for example are looking quite old with all thier bulkiness now.. And the front is quite square, even for the time it debuted.

Like I said, I love the way the mk1 looks, not calling it ugly, just noticed it's hitting that point in it's life where the tech used in car design and body manufacture is starting to move on and leave it behind,

As for the Ibiza? It's not fair to compare it against the later facelifts... but it still look more dated than original 9n based Ibiza due to the curvier body, like Pastyboy said

It's other little things as well that make it stick out as begin from an older generation.. The mk1's front bumper and the vRS rear bumper being the worse offenders.. It's all defusers and sculptured intakes now.. And as already said, the head light design is very flat and square!

See I actually like the deep bumpers on the Mk1, I'd personally like to see the Mk2 with a deeper rear bumper rather than some crappy excuse of a diffuser which does nothing! Give it a few more years and I reckon the Mk2 will look out of date quicker than the Mk1 did, IMO of course :)

I reckon ya right on that prediction Simon!

1) The shape and styling have had to grow on me. I didn't buy on looks particularly. More a combination of price, performance, contra-BMW thinking.

2) Remember the MK1 is a small hatchback, Fiesta equivalent sort of vehicle. IMO the styling falls down on the detail treatment of the bumpers and the dash. Maybe the materials used to trim the interior. At least it's individual, not really following the herd. Car styling designs are like plagues, IMO. Look at the number of huge snouts with huge big manufacturers' badges on them. Iconic only for 12 months before the designer/studio flogs similar design across the globe.

3) What I think the MK2 should have been was the MK1+. make it lighter, more refined, certainly, more economical, cleaner, yes!

For me, it's not that the MK1 has dated, but that the MK2 is disappointing.

J.

I too still like the look of the mk1. At first I wasn't keen on the Mk2, but the facelifted ones are slowly growing on me.

Green is the best colour for it.
