What to do with my old Fabia?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I have a Fabia that will cost more to repair than it is worth so was just wondering if anyone had suggestions for what options are open to me.

I was thinking I could sell to 'webuyanycar.com' or maybe just take it to a farm and just take it apart myself for fun and for the experience perhaps, any point stripping it out and selling bits of it on ebay? What do you guys think?

More details?

What type and engine (can't see details as on phone)

Mileage?

May be worth selling parts off it. Doubt we buy any car will buy anything that is not working/ damaged although I'm not certain about that

Do not sell to 'Webuyanycar'. They will only offer you £50 for it if it needs repairs, which isnt right as thats less than scrap value. They should not be in business imo.

Your options are:

1. Break it - people always after certain parts: Body panels, doors, stereo, dashboard, seats, door trim, parcel shelf, bootlid,bonnet.....

Then scrap the shell (which you should get more than £50 for)

2. Car auction - if it is driveable? could you temporary disguise the problem? give the car a good valet then auction it if you can.

3. Fix it - just because the cost of repair is more than value of the car doesnt mean you can't fix it. Were you happy with the car before the problem occured? If so you should consider this option as you could fix it and the car could last for many more years. Remember its all about the usage value of the car.

Hope this helps

Sorry to hear that, could be facing the same myself soon :-(

Did you scrap your Fabia?

If so did you have an ABS pump Part number 6Q0 614 417D

Where abouts are you? I have space here to break a car if needed.

Morning guys, thanks for your responses!

Sorry mate, not scraped yet, it's just sitting in my drive. I will let you know if I break it and I have the part.

Thanks mate, I appreciate the offer but I'm in north London so a little far :p but thanks for the offer.

Well, I will need to put the entire car on axels and do quite a lot to get it to 'sale' condition. I am not a fan of getting a car to the stage where it will just about run then selling it as I prefer to be sure that the car will drive at least a year and i.e. pass an MOT. I do not want to lie to anyone about its condition. So while I am still considering taking it to a farm, putting on axels and repairing all the things that are holding it back, I am curious about the other quicker and easier ways of getting rid of it. My insurance for the new motor will be in the area of £650 so if I can repair the fabia and sell it for £500 then I consider that a win on my part.

If I do break it for spares, does anyone have any ideas on how much I can get for popular spares? What parts are worth salvaging?

Thanks for your help.

What exactly are the issues with the Fabia to lead you to this point.

What exactly are the issues with the Fabia to lead you to this point.

Leaking rad (although it might be the temp sensor), new thermostat is needed, windscreen washer tank needs replacing, new windshield wiper and a few little things that I can do no problem.

The more anoying thing to do is replacing the front coils as taking out the struts is a PITA because it is SO siezed up I think I'll need a sledgehammer to take them off.

More anoying still is the steering, last winter the PAS kept cutting out first few minutes of a journey (pump/sensor to blame) but it has been behaving the past 7 months so...

Changing gears is difficult (stiff changes) - possibly cable adjustments and some grease in some parts is needed.

Not to mention the usual oil changes, filters etc. plus the rubber on most joints is damaged so alot of little bits to replace.

All in all the cost to repair if I give it to a pro mechanic will be in the region of £400 at least (if it's a nice mechanic :) ) and given the rust on the car (quite alot of rust :S ) its true value is arround £500-£750 MAX if it's running ofcourse.

Throw it on eBay with an entertaining listing and watch the bids come rolling in. My brother had an old Astra estate that was fit for scrap, but my husband wrote a funny listing for it and it sold for about £300

Nothing a breaker bar and some plus gas/penetrating oil shouldn't be able to handle. Dealing with seized fixings is one of the most infuriating things about working on cars, but one you have to learn all the tricks to deal with :)

A good man and honest answer IMHO

I have no idea what to do but I do know that the cost of second hand spares is scarey, Wheels with tyres 5mm tread at £40 each for starters

so breaking it would be the way to go IF it is too expensive to get it to the standard you would want to sell it to someone at

National

Just a quick question... is there such a place where I would be able to take my old car (whatever it may be) and race it against likeminded people and not be afraid to crash it etc?

Hmm, could be ripe for a project car methinks....if you're interested in getting rid then give me a call (and I happen to be in London next week).

Sorry man, this is my oportunity to do something. I am really interested in 'car mechanics' and I will either fix up the skoda and sell on ebay, take it to pieces and clean it up, put it together etc (or something like that) or do something fun with it. So I'm just looking for ideas of what other people have done with their old rusty skodas :)

Rusty Skodas? Definitely not true.
