Octy VRS Petrol Vs Diesel

Featured Replies

As a 2nd car the VRS 170 CR makes a bloody fantastic car it handles well and can push on when driving home down the country roads. My other car is a 500bhp Subaru so I didn’t want anything too slow or soft and the VRS is perfect partner. My original plan was to buy a GTR but in the end these two cars offer a much better compromise than one super car.

Would I buy a petrol VRS probably not I think I would need more fun factor. The VRS is a much better car than a similar priced Subaru etc however you don’t get the same smile factor when you turn the key.

bought my VRS CR because it was the right car at the right time for the right price and also because my previous CR was squiched in an RTA!.

I considered a petrol but I have a heavy right foot and do 13K a year so by the time I took into account depreciation, cost of fuel, cost of the car etc it made the most economic sense by far to go for the oil burner. At the end of the day its quick enough point to point, cruises well (apart from the road noice) and I get a lovely warm feeling knowing that the guy sitting next to me in his Golf GTD paid about £25k for the same spec :giggle:

I paid £17.5K for a brand new VRS 170CR MY2011 with rear PDC. by my reckoning thats a bloody bargain and it was cheaper even than an equivalent petrol!

Have I owned a petrol one? No, but I've owned lots of petrol cars - Scooby, a couple of jags, a heavily modified Fiat Cinqucento, Merc AMG, Beemer 320i, M3 old M5 etc. Reasonably varied. Would I buy a petrol one - yep, you bet but at this time, the oil burner suits me.

The decision is yours to make. Each has their merits and demerits and each offers a huge amount of fun. There is no "which one is best" here because the one thats best is the one that suits you,

Good luck with the decision and purchase and when you come to tinker, there are loads of really helpful and knowledgable people on this forum so just post a message!

Point proved, I could have saved 50 posts :giggle:

The decision is yours, cars are subjective, only you know your own circumstances. All the info is on these forums, so read, drive and buy the one that makes sense for you.

Wow there are a lot of petrol owners out there who obviously haven't driven a CR......yet are quick enough to jump on the 'have you driven the TSI' bandwagon.

Only sounds like a tractor if the tractor you were comparing it to had a petrol engine in it!

I've owned all vRS engine variants with the exception of the pd diesel but I borrowed one once for an extended test drive once so I feel well position to provide an opinion. I had both the cr and tsi remapped to stage 1.

The cr is a lovely smooth engine but it's not really that quick and not particularly exciting to drive.

My experience was poor fuel consumption returning an average of 36 mpg, only 7 more than my remapped vRS tsi.

A stage 1 remap on a cr will give similar performance to a standard vRS tsi but even then I couldn't quite keep up with a Leon FR tsi.

A remapped vRS tsi is like night and day compared to standard and would destroy a remapped cr.

It's really down to what you personally prefer, I prefer better performance and don't really care about fuel economy, although 29 mpg from a stage 1 vRS at about 265bhp isn't bad. The cr is not a bad car and when driven reasonably I am sure offers decent economy and it's quickish for many I'm sure but the final straw for me was when I couldn't pull away from a Mazda 6 and that was when my cr was remapped.

My advice, take both the tsi and cr on unaccompanied and extended test drives and don't be afraid to drive them hard. If your dealer won't oblige then walk away as plenty of others will.

Don't think any diesel owner has slated the TSI tbh. :dull:

Nothing to slate, it's a fantastic engine

Was the mazda 6 the mps model that has the 2.3 turbo, and was it mapped. as i said in a other post my car kept up with a r32 doing a overtake, would have it's ass kicked from a stand still, so it looks like when the wheels are turning theres nothing much between any car with a bit of power until you start going crazy power.

I know the OP wants answers but this is the same old thread that appears on every page of these forums with all the same old replies. People do not use the search (how many oil topics are there?!), and no one seems to mind.

All these things cog up and spam the forums making it a worse place for regular readers. Sorry but these things need saying and this forum needs moderating like many other car forums. (no offence OP).

My heading clearly states what I, as a new vrs owner, would like to talk about to people with more experience, so if it doesn't appeal to you then don't delve into it and read any further, quite simple really!

love this one lol.

Nope, an mps would have past me like I was stood still in my cr. Don't know what engine it was though.

Jeez is this thread still going?

Lock it pleeeeeease!

So do spam topics, not generally tolerated on other forums ;)

Aren't we due for another 'which oil thread'?!

Petrol rulz, diesel is for tramps :moon:

It needs to continue, well at least until Brimma has had his say, which I am looking forward to..... :giggle:

I'm surprised it's taken this long :D

I love DIESEL! Love it, love it love it.................................forever and ever..................!!!!!!!!

Its widely awknowledged that petrol vRS drivers could kick diesels vRS drivers a55 in a man test

Diesel doesn't catch fire as easily in a crash, so there is an upside to owning the diesel VRS. :giggle:

Think we should get a DSG vs manual thread up going as well, haven't seen one for a while. To be fair all members are entitled to start a thread and some people are new so let them ask. Us briskodians are helpful and answer people's questions and until this stops let's carry on.
